In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I’m going to go to go over the second aspect of Confidence, interpersonal confidence and how it affects personal performance.

Interpersonal Confidence – Performance and wellbeing can often be determined our sense of interpersonal confidence

Interpersonal confidence reflects the ability to deal confidently with challenge from others. Those with good interpersonal confidence are likely to better at promoting themselves and the things they represent. They are good at dealing positively with people.

Those with high levels of interpersonal confidence tend to be more assertive, better at dealing with difficult people and will be more comfortable in social settings.

Those with low levels will show opposite characteristics. They will be submissive, uncomfortable at dealing with people and may be reluctant to engage with people. They may show some of these behaviors, which cluster around two themes – submissiveness when engaged with people and reluctance to engage in the first place.

  • If challenged or criticized, they will back down quickly. They may even accept criticism when it is not deserved. When dealing with others they will allow others to dominate what is happening – even though they should be more influential. They can back down even where they are the acknowledged expert.
  • They may try to avoid dealing with people. Attending meetings and presentations can be a major challenge for them. They may try to avoid dealing with difficult or awkward people.
  • Even when physically in the presence of other they may struggle to engage; avoiding participating in a discussion, asking questions and testing others views., whereas those with high levels of interpersonal confidence will exhibit a different set of behaviors.

Confidence in Abilities

High Levels of Interpersonal Confidence:

  • They will stand their ground when they need to do this. They will argue their corner and defend their position – especially where it’s important to them that they do this. If they believe they are right they can be tenacious about their belief.
  • They won’t ordinarily allow others to dominate them.
  • They will take criticism and challenge in their stride and can recover quickly from this kind of setback or difficulty.
  • When asked to contribute or participate in discussion or debate, they are happy to “have a go”. Sometimes they can be very influential, shaping a discussion and bringing people round to their point of view – sometimes getting their own way even when others have a better case to offer.
  • If questioned they will usually provide a fuller response to questions. This applies to written questions (for example in examinations) as well as oral questions.
  • They will usually have developed superior oral skills. Sometimes they will describe as having the “gift of the gab”. The will often be chosen to represent a group or the views of a group – especially where others are less confident.

Therefore, they will readily handle presentations, interviews and attend meetings.
