10 Amazing Ways to Boost Your Mood

We all have our bad days. There are just some mornings when it seems that we got up from the wrong side of the bed moodand no amount of chocolate can seem to cheer you up. Sometimes we can’t identify what is really making us feel this way. It could have been someone or something that triggered us to have that sinking feeling.

Don’t fret! There are a lot of things we can do to overcome this feeling. You’ll be surprised that it just takes a little effort to bring back the good mood. Read on and you will see how it is done.

  1. Do An Act of Kindness

People who do volunteer work are most likely happier than people who don’t. Studies prove that by doing volunteer work it uplifts people because it enhances empathy. This makes you thankful for all the good things you have in your life.

You can start out with small good deeds by being nice to a neighbor or donating goods to victims of a tragedy like a fire or calamity. You can take it a step further by being active in a community soup kitchen or signing up for a medical mission as a volunteer. Be an organ donor or join a charity marathon. Donate for a good cause.

  1. Refresh Old Memories! Flip Through Old Photos

A research was conducted in Open University testing the mood of the several people if it got better after they ate chocolate, drank alcohol, watched TV, listened to music or looked at their photos. The results revealed that after eating chocolates their moods did not change, alcohol and watching TV just gave a 1% boost. Viewing pictures made the most significant change by 11%.

So if you are feeling bad, look at pictures that will make you feel better. It could be pictures of your kids, your favorite pet or memories of your favorite vacation. Hang one of your favorite pictures in your cubicle at the workplace and you’ll see how it makes you feel perky every day.

  1. Remember All Your Good Deeds

At the end of the day, keep a journal of all the good things that happened to you no matter how insignificant it seems. Describe those moments in detail and what your role in making that moment happy was. You’ll be surprised to realize that you have control on things that make you happy. When you are feeling down, just pull out the journal so you can recall all these wonderful memories.

  1. Live In The Now. Forget The Past And The Future

Some of the happiest moments can trigger contemplation and analysis. Sometimes, we enjoy experiences the most if we simply engross ourselves on the present without judging and overthinking.

Settle in your room with dim lights and listen to music. Enjoy reading a novel. Set a day in the week to pamper yourself or enjoy doing a hobby.

  1. Get Physically Active. Literally

Exercise does wonders in getting you out of a bad mood. When you are physically active like exercising, your body produces endorphins, the happy hormones.

Get some exercise but don’t think of it as something you are forcing yourself to do. If not, you will get lazy and put off doing it. Think of an exercise routine that you will have fun and love doing. Make a schedule like, you only do workouts 3 days in a week, every other day. You can do yoga on Mondays, working out on a rowing machine on Wednesdays, then jogging on Fridays. On these days you look forward to an activity where you know you will enjoy doing the rest of the day. It affects your outlook for the other days of the week. You would go back home or to the office the next day feeling rejuvenated and in better spirits.

  1. Stop Blaming Yourself

No one is perfect so stop blaming yourself! Just think of your best image. Honestly, we are not always the person we want to be. By imagining our perfect alter ego – confident, calm, with swagger- that will definitely make us feel better about ourselves.

  1. Look Into Positive Side Of Everything

Keep a positive outlook on everything even if things are not going your way. Always think that other people have it worse than you. Try and look for the silver lining in any situation. There’s always a reason why things happen and usually it is for the best. If it’s raining outside and you hate the rain, just think of how the weather has cooled down after several days of scorching heat. Think of how hot it is in places like Sahara, where there is no rain. You’ll appreciate what’s happening to you right now when you realize you’ve always had it better.

  1. Have Some Room For Sunlight

Let some natural sunlight into your room by drawing the curtains open first thing when you wake up. Sunlight gives a wonderful vibe into the atmosphere and it’s a good source of Vitamin D. It’s the best way to wake up feeling energized and healthy. You’ll feel the difference as you go on with your day.

  1. Talk To A Friend

Sometimes all we need is a willing friend who will listen as we unload our emotion burden. A good friend will listen without prejudice. Choose the person you will talk to about what’s bothering you. Not all friends will be good listeners and instead give you unsolicited advice that can upset you all the more. Choose a friend who you know can cheer you up or listen patiently without passing unnecessary judgement. It could be your best friend or an acquaintance who knows you well and can give you objective insights.

  1. Smile More and Often! It Doesn’t Cost You A Penny

Did you know it takes just 17 muscles to smile and 43 muscles to frown? Remember that whenever you are feeling down because nobody wants to have wrinkles from too much frowning. If you find it very hard to smile, think of a happy memory and start smiling. Whenever we smile our mood starts to change and we radiate that to other people. Smiles are contagious even if they are half meant. You notice how the aura of a person changes when they smile? And how your outfit of the day looks better on you when you are smiling? That’s how powerful a smile is. The best part of smiling? It’s free and won’t cost you anything.
