I recently participated in the Combine360 Trainer Certification 4-day workshop here in San Francisco and it wasathletic performance amazing!

I would like to give a special shout-out to, Peter Twist, Brain Griffin, Brian Nunez, Lisa Herrington, Jen Miramontes, Stacey Daniels BJ Corey and Janice Hutton who inspired us all to go dig deep and “earn it!

Full Disclosure:  I have not and will not be receiving any compensation for this post.  Also, this review is my opinion only and not necessary the views of the people or companies mentioned.

Combine360

So, what is Combine 360?

Combine360 is a performance platform to help trainers and athletes (and I consider everyone as an athlete at some level) to achieve peak physical performance both on and off their chosen playing field.

There are several components that make up the Combine360 platform.

The first is the assessment phase.   The assessment measures three major aspects that make up the athletes performance.  These areas are assigned scores that when added together can add up to a total of 360, hence Combine360.

These three major aspects of Combin360 Assessment are:

  • Athleticism(total available score 120)
    • Foundational Athleticism
  • Movement(total available score 120)
    • Sport Specific Movement
    • Integrative Movement
    • Visual Ability
  • Character(total available score 120)
    • An athlete’s attitude, mental toughness, ability to communicate effectively

Each aspect is dissected during the assessment to gain a deeper understanding of the individual along with their strengths and areas of improvement.

After the assessment phase is completed a program is developed to enhance the areas needing improvement and further developing the areas that are strong.

The developmental program addresses:

Performance Balance: All movement is dependent on great balance.  If there is an area of weakness that requires enhanced balance (and believe me, we can all use assistance in this area) then a process using ground-based, top-down and lever-loaded balance challenges are utilized.  They will focus on the neuromuscular feedback system that will in turn create intuitive, reactive body awareness and unified body control essential for more aggressive physical actions.

Athletic Movement: This element explores the progressive approach necessary to develop coordination, agility, deceleration, speed and quickness with a focus on movement precision and mechanical efficiency.

Combine Strength: This phase emphasizes maximizing strength and power by utilizing high metabolic, whole body integrated exercises along with methods that harness mental strength to ignite explosive force production in the muscles.

Within each of these areas (balance, athletic movement and combine strength) there is a specific progression to take each individual through.

This progression is:

1 – Train to Improve:

This portion focuses on developing the foundation of each athlete’s engine.  Here the athlete is able to develop the necessary total body balance, strength and foundational movement patterns to prepare them for the next phase of training.

2 – Train to Gain:

This next level focuses on improving body function so that the athlete is better prepared to engage in harder and more complex exercises and routines.  Here the individual must be able to demonstrate that all of their body can coordinate the intense actions cohesively.

3 – Train to Perform:

The final level takes the specific area being improved, i.e. balances, athletic movement or combine strength, and challenges the athlete so that there is an improved and seamless transfer to their sport specific action.

Let The Fun Begin

If you’re a novice personal trainer this may seem convoluted and once you grasp the logic behind this protocol you’ll see the power it has.

Then the fun part starts….the Combine360 Challenge!

This is where, after you have become proficient in the specific area(s), you get to demonstrate your competency in a challenge.

The Combine360 Challenge is SO cool and so much fun there isn’t enough adjectives for me to describe it.

Here’s a brief Youtube from the IDEA World Fitness Convention in Los Angeles on Aug 15, 2011 that goes over the Combine360 Challenge:

YouTube Preview Image

So, that’s a VERY quick summary…which by the way does not come close to giving the Combine360 justice.

My Review

I’ve been involved in the fitness industry for over 15 years, been certified by ISSA and NESTA and have been member of NSCA. Let me tell you, I’ve never seen or been involved with a program that supports the complete and total development of an athlete like Combine360.

Before I go on I want to emphasize that Combine360 is for anyone and everyone who wants to improve and enhance their physical movement.  It’s not just for the elite athletes.

That’s one of the many great things about this program; it’s scalable to the person being trained.

If you’ve never trained before, you’ll go through the same process, just scaled to your level. If you’re a weekend warrior, fantastic!  The program can be scaled to your demands.

By looking at the total person (balance, movement and character) Combine360 can address any areas that need improvement.  No stone goes unturned.  This is a complete system to produce a fully physically functional person.

And one of my favorite parts of the Combine360 is that it looks at the mental strength side of the athlete.  No other program out there covers this…not one!

We Live In 3 Dimensions

The problem with most traditional personal and athletic training is that it has been, and still is, linear.  Training is done on machines or uses a single plan of motion.

News flash…

We don’t move and live in a linear world with have 3 dimensions in which we move and unless with train for ALL them and the combinations of them, we open ourselves up to injury and subpar performance.

Even for those more progressive trainers that are working in multi-planes Combine360 gives you new methods (based on scientific research), a process to track the progress of your clients and to push them to new levels.

I must emphasize that is not, nor is it similar to, CrossFit.  Combine360 is a much more organized and purposeful training methodology dedicated to enhancing the entire athletic engine.

Side Benefit

If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time you know I’m all about improving mental strength and cognitive ability.  Well here’s the really cool thing about Combine360 training…you improve them both!

Obviously participating in the challenges is going to stretch you and improve your mental strength.  But during your training, since you’ll be new exercises and pieces of equipment on a regular basis you brain is going to form new neuropathy ways.

I know…I can you here saying “Big deal, what does mean to me?”

In a word…everything!

You see, as you develop new neuropathy ways you create more mental resources.  More mental resources mean more creative problem solving ability as well as improved memory and the ability to think differently.

This in turns empowers you to be able to more purposefully and consciously in the creation of your reality.  Combine360 develops your ability to live a life of power, purpose, and passion with perseverance!

A Powerful Program

So with Combine360 you not only look good, feel good, move good but you think good as well!

Now that’s powerful!

OK…for the icing on the cake, Combine360 is supported by several awesome companies.

Who are they?

  • Under Armour® – Their mission, make all athletes better.
  • IMG (only the most powerful sports performance and management company in the word).
  • Gatorade – The premier sports drink company.
  • TRX® – The number one manufacture and educator of suspension training.

In addition, individuals like Todd Durkin and Peter Twist are involved.

As an athlete when playing is your sport (kids) or when training is your sport (adults) or when competing is your sport (competitive athletes) Combine360 training can give you the edge to go from good to elite.

Side note: I’m going to discuss in a separate post how Combine360 can assist the tactical athlete to meet their missions and return safely, that is injury free.

As a trainer, Combine360 gives you more tools and resources to help your clients meet and exceed their goals.  When this happens you have ecstatic clients and they tell others.  When they tell others they, you get new clients, when you get new clients your business grows.

You do want your business to grow…don’t you?

What’s the downside?

Only one…

There’s not enough certified Combine360 Trainers out there to spread love.

To find out how to become a certified Combine360 Trainer or to find the closest one to you, visit their site at: http://www.combine360.com/

Also, make sure you check out their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/combine360

Or you can contact me, and if I can’t help you I’ll direct you to someone who can.

The bottom line is that if you want to really improve and enhance your athletic engine or help others improve theirs Combine360 is a necessary set of tools to add to your tool box.

Welcome back to another Mental Strength Tip!mental strength negotiation

Achieving personal success and reaching your personal goals begins with a mental strength mindset of empowering beliefs.

Reaching your personal goals and personal success starts in your mind…and finishes with taking inspired and massive action.

This is one in a series of virtual success coaching and mental strength tips to help kick-start your week.  It is intended to enthuse and inspire you to take action so that you can reach your personal goals and personal success.

I take one mental strength tips and run though a brief overview of it, then ask some very direct success coaching questions.  The intention of this virtual success coaching session is for you to write and answer these questions in your success journal and then reflect on them to gain insight on yourself, your dreams and what’s holding you back.

These series of posts are for YOU!  If I’m not able to success coach you personally then I highly recommend picking up a copy of “Develop the Mental Strength of a Warrior.” It’s a book that will take you through the exact process to take back control of your thoughts so that you can live a life a power, purpose and passion with perseverance!

You can your copy now by going HERE.

Objective of this Mental Strength Tip:

To help you understand that to reach your personal goals and achieve personal success that only win-win deals are negotiated.

Let’s Get Started:

According to Wikipeda negotiation is a dialogue between two or more people or parties, intended to reach an understanding, resolve point of difference, to produce an agreement upon courses of action, to bargain for individual or collective advantage, to craft outcomes to satisfy various interests of two people/parties involved in negotiation process.

Mental strength negotiation is slightly different.  It is the process where each party involved in negotiating tries to come up with a win-win solution that does not take advantage of either party.

Questions to Uncover Beliefs about Mental Strength Thinking:

  • Who are the smartest negotiators you know and why?
  • Are the best negotiators more ego or spirit driven?
  • How do you know when you’ve succeeded in a negation?

Unsupportive Beliefs about Negotiation

  • The person who gets the best deal wins.
  • The negotiator who makes the most money wins.
  • The best negotiator are shrewd, crafty and not to be trusted.

Mental Strength Beliefs about Negotiation

  • No one wins a negotiation unless everyone wins.
  • The best negotiators are spirit driven.
  • The smartest negotiators always do the right thing for all parties involved.

Outrageous Questions:

  • Do you always negotiate win-win deal whenever possible?
  • Are your thoughts during a negation rooted in fear and scarcity or love and abundance?
  • Are you afraid to help the party you’re negotiating with gets what they want?
    • If so, what are you afraid of?

Reflective Questions:

  • Would your friends, family and co-workers or clients say you’re a mental strength negotiator and always interested in a win-win deal?
  • What would you have to believe in order to negotiate from a mindset of love and abundance?
  • What makes you feel good after a long negotiation?

Mental Strength Coaching:

The average person thinking is always afraid that someone is out to take advantage of them.  Even though this is sometimes true, it has nothing to do you developing a mental strength negation mindset.

My job here as your virtual mental strength and success coach is to help you realize that operation from love and abundance is always in your best interest, even though it may not always is obvious.

Win-win negotiating is another opportunity to help you raise your level of awareness and transcend your fear-based thinking.

Final Thought

Coaching you to negotiate win-win deals has almost nothing to do with the art of negating.  This virtual success coaching session is to encourage you to use your mind and direct your mental strength energy toward a mutually favorable outcome.  Win-win negotiating is an effect and the cause is mental strength things based in love, understanding and abundance.

“If you come to a negotiation table saying you have the final truth, that you know nothing but the truth and that is final, you will get nothing.” – Harri Holkeri

I’m taking a class “Practical Mysticism” at The Center for Spiritual Living here in San Jose.  The class is based on two drak night of the soulbooks, “The Foundation of Mysticism” by Joel S. Goldsmith and “Enter the Castle” by Caroline Myss. “Enter the Castle” is based on the work and writings of Teresa of Avlia.

Both these books blend very nicely with one of my favorite soul sojourn books, “Soul Craft” by Bill Plotkin

All these books help a person with soul work and have been a big influence in my work with The Warriors Quest Intensive.

When we start out doing soul work, ether soul retrieval, Enter the Castle or any other form of consciousness awareness and elevation, there will come a time, for most of us, that we will enter what is called the “Dark Night of the Soul.”

The dark night of the soul is like soul spelunking.  You have to go into a dark and strange place, unfamiliar and scary.  But what you find are the treasures you have buried deep away and when you return with them you will be entering a “new dawn.”

You are then a mystic warrior!

Dark Night of the Soul

“Dark night of the soul” sounds like a threatening and much to be avoided experience. Yet perhaps a quarter of the seekers on the road to higher consciousness will pass through the dark night. In fact, they may pass through several until they experience the profound joy of their true nature.

Many mystic warriors would encourage the dark night experience if they knew what it was. However, to one engaged in the dark night, suffering seems unending.

The dark night occurs after considerable advancement toward higher consciousness. Indeed, the dark night usually occurs like an initiation before one of these special mystic warriors is admitted into regular relationship with higher consciousness.

The dark night also occurs to those who do not seek relationship but immersion or unity in the higher consciousness. While the term dark night of the soul is used broadly, its general meaning — in the field of higher consciousness — is a lengthy and profound absence of light and hope. In the dark night you feel profoundly alone.

You Can’t Fit In

The dark night usually develops this way:

You, as a genuine seeker to become a mystic warrior, have gone through many significant phases as you progress toward higher consciousness. Your faith is strong. You have kept loyal companionship with fellow seekers and perhaps you have already found a special teacher.

You’ve experienced indications of the reality of higher consciousness and yearn to be more deeply in communion with it. You see the principles of a higher power at work in your life. Yet, all in all, you find yourself somehow painfully on the outside. You feel caught between your old way of living, your old tendencies and associations, and this nebulous, unreachable realm of higher consciousness.

You feel an exile in both places. You don’t belong in the old pastimes, in the old empty or numbing way of life, yet you somehow can’t fit in or feel at home in the fellowship of those who talk naturally of the higher consciousness and its reality.

They are experienced, they are absorbed in it. They are loving, giving people. But you are unable to live, with full heart and mind, the way they do. They’re able to apply the principles of higher consciousness easily, yet it’s so hard for you.

They have manifestations and proofs on a regular basis. You only stretch like a human mule after a receding corncob while pulling the heavy weight of your old tendencies behind you.

You try to be good, and often you can’t. You try to be a loving and find at times your heart is hard like stone. Sometimes your projects fall down around your ears. You keep struggling and still you don’t break through. You understand the path is one of joy and yet your life seems to have been barren for a month or two, perhaps longer. Where did that early joy and zest go?

Hanging On

Up to this particular time there was joy, there was delight. But now there is only a hanging on, a dogged hanging on. You persist because you can’t conceive of going back to your old way of life. That seems impossible now. That would be like going to prison, living as if you had a transorbital lobotomy.

You deeply want to have joy and fulfillment, easily manifest prosperity, but something’s not working. You don’t know what it is but something’s awry, and your meditations have lost their luster. Sometimes, during rare meditations, you do experience brief moments of peace.

Your agonizing mind and heart rest from their turbulence and even these fleeting times of calm are so deeply appreciated. Your light dance of life, which had gone on for some time, is now a trudging in what seems a devastated and alien land.

Your fellow seekers look at you and show their concern. Their words of kindness are valued but you feel you’re somehow incapable of responding well. Your heart is numb. At these times your friends try to cheer you up.

They invite you to dinner. You seem to perform fairly well, despite the emptiness you feel inside.

What else is there to do?

You wonder if you have any right to be in their fellowship at all. You think of leaving town, but where would you go?

What good would diversion be?

A number of your friends in the fellowship of this great path know what you are going through for they have been through it themselves. They feel the main thing to do is encourage you to go on. They know if you keep it up and do not quit you will succeed.

They know if you quit you will be a self-reject and will return to the old life, forever a foreigner, being neither at home with it nor at home anywhere else. They recognize that your own higher self, out of love, is lifting you up into its embrace. They see you are being drawn into your dark night because:

  1. Your inner potential has great stature.
  1. Your crusty, old ego requires you go through the dark night in order to be transformed.

You Feel Totally Alone

Other mystic warriors, for various reasons, do not have to pass through the dark night. However, the dark night is your way.

Your night is a very difficult time. While others may one day envy you for the marvelous growth you experienced in such a short, intensified period, you will, because of the pain of your experience, always feel profound compassion for those whom you one day see going through a similar night.

Being caught between the old way of life and the new possibilities, your sense of alienation intensifies. Your sense of inadequacy and not knowing what to do next becomes gnawingly constant. You feel you would do anything to get out of this state, yet it is only your ego which is keeping you in it. However, this insight is impossible for you to grasp while going through your long night.

And you feel so totally alone. Sure, you have friends and you appreciate them, but you are keenly aware they are not capable of feeling what you are feeling or knowing what you are going through. Sometimes they seem like clowns; sometimes they seem empty-headed, caught up in meaningless pursuits.

They do not understand, you think, how much you are suffering or how you cry out and pray deep into each midnight. You try their advice but it doesn’t seem to touch the heart of the matter.

You begin to enter the dark night in earnest when you feel completely stranded. In the fullness of the dark night you don’t know where you are spiritually. You’re separate from Spirit and man. You do not know where to turn. Your friends love you and wish you well but your condition does not improve.

The dark night is a very private matter. The person in the dark night is generally able to function quite well despite inner suffering. Often your acquaintances never suspect that you are going through the dark night — they probably do not even know what it is. Only people close to you — especially friends along the path — can recognize your pain.

You feel like a hollow person doing the activities of life with no motivation except expediency. Your eyes seem deeper in your head. You are profoundly aware of the suffering of humanity and the cruelty of one person to another. You feel that cruelty and negativity far outweigh love and constructive action.

You Enter Midnight

Alone, and not wishing to be, unable even to express yourself to others, you enter midnight and the greatest intensity of the dark night. Here you have finally come to the time of sovereign solitude. In this precious time, which has no apparent prospects of love or happiness, you clearly perceive that nothing in the outer world has proven adequate to heal your condition.

Nobody, not even your dearest friends and loved ones, can make you whole. Even if they have tried, and love you enough to try loving you forever, they can’t give you peace.

You eye your books, DVD’s and audio’s and consider all the benefit you have gained from these extremely wise vessels of truth. Yet not one book, not one thought, goes deep enough inside you to where the affliction abides.

You look at your possessions, your money container. No material thing has been able to help you. No material means have worked. Nothing, no one, in the outer world has enabled you to come out of this dark night.

In your loneliness, you next — in a seemingly random process — notice that none of your thoughts have proven adequate to your suffering. Not one — even repeated fifty thousand times — breaks the inner storm and lets in light.

Spirit and higher consciousness seem so far away that perhaps they are unreal. Neither one has, despite your protracted exposure of yourself, done anything to ease or remove your agony. Nothing appears efficacious.

Nothing works.

Clearly, there is nowhere to turn. There is nothing to be done. All actions you considered have been tried. There is nothing to think, nothing to feel, nothing to do, nowhere to go. It seems you have to accept this defeat — or, you can persist in struggling against it.

For awhile longer, you go about thinking, feeling, and doing other options that occur to you. But you realize in the midnight of your soul that you have tried every option you know of.

This is such a powerful state that I just can’t deliver all the information at once.  Please read this over again.  If you feel like you are on the path of the mystic warrior then pick up copies of the books mentioned.  Or better yet, come out here for you own private and personal Warriors Quest.  I’ll be your guide as we go together on your soul spelunking adventure.

Step 5 – Motivation In Taking Your Athletic Training To The Next Level motivation for peak athletic performance

What’s your athletic dream?

What’s your performance goal?

Where do you want to take your athletic performance?

These are all very important questions to answer, plus a few more, before you can begin to talk about motivation.

With out a big dream and goal there’s no need to up your game.

Motivation, the long-lasting kind, comes from inside.  Sure, your coach’s and teammates can get you temporarily pumped-up, but long sustaining motivation comes from the inside.

And how does this motivation originate?

By having a powerful goal about your athletic career.

This is the fire in the belly, but is has to be your fire and your belly

Motivation is…

  • Going the extra distance
  • Getting up earlier then your teammates and competition
  • Working on your weaknesses
  • Is say yes when you’re asked to do more
  • Having a direction
  • Taking action
  • Stepping outside your comfort zone

Without motivation most athletes end up having “permanent potential.” That is, they never truly reach peak performance.

I’ll warn you, you can’t stay or get motivated by staying inside your comfort zone. You must venture outside your comfort zone, both physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Motivation is not about telling what you are going to do.  Motivation is about doing something and then telling what you did.

So, what are you motivated to do?

What is your direction…your athletic goal…your athletic dream?

With your athletic training, and in life, you are constantly faced with a decision point.  One path leads to being average…at best.  The other path…well this path leads to peak athletic performance.

Let me give you an example:

Example 1: Let’s say some friends are going out on the town.  You know you have practice tomorrow, but you don’t want to miss out on the fun so you go so you decide to go out with them.  You’ve just decided to take the average path.

Example 2: You’re in the middle of an intense practice and you’re hurting big time. Your coach asks you to step it up a notch.  You think to yourself “no way!” and when the coach looks the other way you slack off.  Congratulations, you just took the average path.

Now, let’s say in example 1 you passed on the invitation and stayed in and got the required sleep, nutriment and hydration to perform your best at practice.  You have now taken the path to peak performance.

In example 2 your coach asks you to push by something you’re not that good at.  You know the coach is right; you use your mental strength and dig in.   Great job!  You’ve taken the path of peak performance

You see when you’re motivated to achieve peak athletic performance you practice something you’re not good at, instead of something you’re already mastered.

Taking the average path tension revealing not goal achieving.

The path of peak performance is full of pain, suffering, failure and frustration. But eventually this path does lead to peak athletic performance.

So you may ask why anyone would take this path, the path of peak performance.

Answering this reveals the truth behind motivation.

You have to WANT it!  You MUST have an emotional compelling reason to make to sacrifice worth it.

Let me tell you a story….

There were two warring tribes in the Andes, one that lived in the lowlands and the other high in the mountains. The mountain people invaded the lowlanders one day, and as part of their plundering of the people, they kidnapped a baby of one of the lowlander families and took the infant with them back up into the mountains.

The lowlanders didn’t know how to climb the mountain. They didn’t know any of the trails that the mountain people used, and they didn’t know where to find the mountain people or how to track them in the steep terrain.

Even so, they sent out their best party of fighting men to climb the mountain and bring the baby home.

The men tried first one method of climbing and then another. They tried one trail and then another. After several days of effort, however, they had climbed only several hundred feet.

Feeling hopeless and helpless, the lowlander men decided that the cause was lost, and they prepared to return to their village below.

As they were packing their gear for the descent, they saw the baby’s mother walking toward them. They realized that she was coming down the mountain that they hadn’t figured out how to climb.

And then they saw that she had the baby strapped to her back. How could that be?

One man greeted her and said, “We couldn’t climb this mountain. How did you do this when we, the strongest and most able men in the village, couldn’t do it?”

She shrugged her shoulders and said, “It wasn’t your baby.”

Your big why has to be your “baby!” This will motivate you to push yourself far beyond what the average person would do.

Make this big why specific as possible and positive.  This is basically the SMARTER goal format I have disused numerous times.

Let me give you some quotes from Olympian Champion Dan Gable:

“I’m a big believer in starting with high standards and raising them. We make progress only when we push ourselves to the highest level. If we don’t progress, we backslide into bad habits, laziness and poor attitude.”

“When you finally decide how successful you really want to be, you’ve got to set priorities. Then, each and every day, you’ve got to take care of the top ones. The lower ones may fall behind, but you can’t let the top ones slip. You don’t forget about the lower ones though because they can add up to hurt you. Just take care of the top ones first. In 25 years as a head coach and assistant, I think I might have missed one practice. Why? Because practice is my top priority. A day doesn’t go by when I don’t accomplish something in my family life or my profession because those two things are my top priorities.”

“When I’d get tired and want to stop, I’d wonder what my next opponent was doing. I’d wonder if he was still working out. I tried to visualize him. When I could see him still working, I’d start pushing myself. When I could see him in the shower, I’d push myself harder.”

Dan’s quotes give you the secret to athletic success. That is get comfortable being uncomfortable.  This is what developing mental strength is all about.

When you start to feel the pain, you stay with it.

Here’s another story about the benefits of pain and struggle.

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared.

He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to squeeze its body through the tiny hole.

Then it stopped, as if it couldn’t go further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly.

He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bits of cocoon. The butterfly emerged easily but it had a swollen body and shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch it, expecting that any minute the wings would enlarge and expand enough to support the body.

Neither happened!

In fact the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around and was never able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand:

The restricting cocoon and the struggle required by the butterfly to get through the opening was a way of forcing the fluid from the body into the wings so that it would be ready for flight once that was achieved.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives.

Going through life with no obstacles would cripple us.

We will not be as strong as we could have been and we would never fly.

Anybody can quit.

It’s exactly what your adversaries or competitors hope you will do, and there’s always a legitimate excuse. But have faith; hang in there. Stay in touch with your dream and commitment.

Remember that your resources are always far deeper and far greater than you ever imagine them to be. You got yourself this far. Down deep you’ve got what it takes to go the distance.

Everything counts!

Everything you do today, every decision you make, every thought you have, every action you engage in, has some kind of consequence somewhere in your future. Without measurable, specific goals for each important area of your life, these decisions, thoughts and actions become nothing more than a random exercise in futility.

Make a conscious decision today to take control of your life. Instead of maintaining a habit of procrastination, develop a bias for action!

Remember, goal setting is not about timing; it’s about decisions. It’s not about luck or chance; it’s about determination and hard work. Being athletic isn’t just about how much talent you have. It’s about being persistent in every aspect.

Start today in developing your mental strength for peak athletic performance by picking up a copy of “Mental Strength Training for Athletes” by going HERE.

How are you doing financially?making money

Do you have enough money?

Never let anyone tell you that money is not all that important.

Money is important!

Money is essential!

Without money, every other facet of your life is likely to suffer.  You can starve to death if you don’t have money.

Money has a bad reputation because most sheep and cows don’t have enough of it.  To justify their lack, you will hear them say, “Money is the root of all evil” or “Money can’t buy happiness”.

Both these ideas are completely wrong.  They are used only for rationalizing failure to have money.

Money is not the root of all evil; love of money is.  You can like money very, very, very, much, but never let it become your god.

Respect money for all the good it can do.  Have good plans for your money.  Enjoy money and have a desire for money, but never live your life for money.

Money is a tool.

Use it properly and you can build a happy, satisfying life.  Use it improperly in your life will be miserable.  If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.

An audacious rhino knows that money is what builds and create things.  Without money you wouldn’t be reading this!

Make Happy Money

Just so we’re clear, money can’t buy but it can bring you happiness!  That’s what money is so viable.  What else would you want to buy with it… unhappiness?

No matter how much or how little money you have, you can always use it to bring you happiness; whether it’s paying cash for your 12 room beach house in Hawaii or paying last months rent to keep you from being affected.

If money can’t bring you happiness, why is everyone trying to get it?

Poverty can’t bring happiness.  Stay away from that!

What about the other animals was so much money they could never possibly use it all, yet they are miserable?  These are the animals that have made money or god.  Money can bring happiness, but it makes a poor savior.

Think about all the millionaires who have ended their own lives because of making money their god.  Be careful you don’t get stuck on this route.  The best way to make happy money is to make money your hobby and not your god.

Making Money as a Hobby

You now have a new hobby, making money.  It is right up there as being one of the most profitable hobbies there are.  Rhinos love to make money!  They love the excitement, the challenge and the rewards of building a fortune.

Making money beats collecting stamps or old bottles any day of the week!

Get good at this hobby and you’re liable to become wealthy.  But make sure it’s a hobby, not your work.  Would you rather spend time with your hobby every day, and go to work?

Hobbies are fun, entertaining and stimulating!

This is a hobby that will get you up early in the morning.  You might not even sleep well because you are so excited about getting up.  Remember Christmas Eve when you were a kid?  That is how excited about waking up in the morning you want to be every day!

Making money is a hobby that will compliment any other hobbies you have perfectly.

If you enjoy making money and flying, there could be a turbocharged Bonanza in your life; making money and collecting stamps and there could be an around the world cruise to the countries you are collecting stamps from; making money and skiing, you could one day on your own ski resort.

Can you think of any other hobby more exciting than making money?

Start your collection today!

Try Tithing

Always remember though, this is only a hobby.  Don’t let it become your master.  Never be afraid of losing everything you have made.  Do not fall in love with money to the point where it becomes a burden.

If you worry about losing, worry about it being stolen or worry about spending it, it has become a millstone around your neck.  In that sense, money cannot buy happiness.  At that point, money has become your god.

In order to avoid getting into this trap, I highly recommend tithing.  Give 10% of all the money you make back to a charitable organization.  Give 10% to an institution that inspires you.  If you’re if you can’t find one that inspires you…start one!

Many millionaires have pointed to tithing as the key that brought them fortunes.  Some includes Heinz, Colgate, Kraft, Hill and Rockefeller families.

Here are four reasons to consider tithing:

  1. It helps you keep a proper perspective of money.
  2. You never want to become a Scrooge.
  3. Giving is the most fun part of having money.
  4. Putting the Law of Reciprocity to work for you

In the end it’s all up to you.

There are many wealthy rhinos that do not tithe.  It depends on what you want out of life and what you believe.  I can only present my perspective.  I highly recommend that to live a richer, fuller rhino life start tithing.

Always Pay Yourself First

Regardless of whether you tithe or not, you have to say the least and percent of all you make for yourself.

This is absolutely essential!

You have no choice here!

I cannot stress the importance of this law too much.  There is an excellent book entitled “The Richest Man in Babylon” by George S. Classon that is required reading for all rhinos.  Charge to your brook store or Amazon and get a copy now!

Learn to pay yourself first.  Set up an automatic withdraw where as soon as your money hits the bank 10% of what you made is put right into a savings account.

This is your rhino investment money.  Start saving for the next opportunity…today!

I am fascinated by people. negative beliefs

I guess that’s why I’m a coach.

I can’t tell you how often my conversations center on the frustration that people are having with what’s showing up in their lives.  They say they want one thing, yet something completely different keeps manifesting.

Even with all the information available today, people generally still don’t realize that they are the creators of their reality and what they focus on is what they’ll get.

People are experts at what they DON’T want, but very few really know exactly what they want. This knowing what they don’t want is so deep in their unconsciousness that many individuals don’t even realize it.

All they know is they don’t like their life the way it is.

Let’s take relationships for example.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that if you continue to look for fault with your partner you’ll find it. LOVE is the foundation for long-lasting relationships so why do so many people focus on the faults and not the love?

Why, because they are actually “projecting” their own shortcomings on the other person because they haven’t dealt with those issues yet.

What is on the inside is projected on the outside and herein is the heart of the problem.

People are great at focusing; unfortunately they are focusing on what they don’t want, especially with relationships.

Now my area of expertise is not on relationship, but the principles I’m disusing here can be applied to every other part of your life.

I’m using relationships here are a metaphor to try to get you to understand how you really do get what you look for, i.e. focus on.

So, if you want to experience more love in your life, it makes sense that you should focus on only loving thoughts.   Relationships really bring out the unconsciousness thoughts, which many are mainly based in fear.  Fear of being abandoned, fear of not being enough, and fear of…fill in the blank.

We are so afraid of these fears showing up that unconsciously we look for them in the other person.  And when we find them…oh boy…do we take them and run with them.

We knew we were right!

Then to amplify this more, your partner is doing the exact same thing!

This leads to an inharmonious relationship.  Sure it might not be this way ALL the time, but all it takes is a few of the fear projections to start to erode the relationship.

Just in case you feel that I’m not talking about you, perhaps these projections are showing up in your other relationships, i.e. business, social, etc.

You don’t need to be in an intimate relationship for your unresolved issues to show up.

And just in case you’re wondering, here are some standard excuses why people tolerate staying in a no supportive relationship.  Remember, this can apply to a business relationship as well, just tweak the examples a bit.

10 Excuses For Not Improving A Relationship

  1. It’s not the right time.
  1. If I rock the boat I do not have the financial backing to leave the relationship (business).
  1. Marriage (business) is for life, regardless of how bad it gets.
  1. I am staying because of the children (clients).
  1. Nothing I try works, and they are unwilling to work on the relationship.
  1. He/She just won’t listen.
  1. I’ve tried and it doesn’t work, i.e.  We tried marriage counseling (business coaching) and it didn’t work.
  1. It’s been like this for so long why should I change now – resignation.
  1. I am fearful of what they will do, I am fearful of the unknown if I was to leave so best to stay with what’s known.
  1. It’s not me; they are the ones who are creating the problems.

Here’s where it gets interesting…if your relationship is not “working” then you’re getting a payoff in some way.  Most likely this payoff is confirmation of an underlying limited belief.

You are staying in the relationship most likely because:

  1. You are getting something out of staying in it and it feeds your own negative beliefs about yourself .
  1. You are not committed to living in a harmonious way. If you were committed to living in a loving relationship you would be in one by now.
  1. You are fearful of the unknown.
  1. You tolerate things the way they are because you are stuck in the HOW and are UNWILLING to get the required support to rectify the situation.
  1. You are not aware of the coast of the underlying negative beliefs.
  1. You get to be a victim!   You get mileage out of enrolling people in your life, family, friends, acquaintances about how bad your lot is – very attention seeking.
  1. You do not believe that things cannot get better because of the years of evidence to the contrary – so beliefs are running the show – fundamentally you are resigned to a new possibility.
  1. You don’t trust your faith, yourself or others.
  1. You get to remain a martyr in your life given the impact your situation has on your own well-being.
  1. You need to validate your own unhealed aspects of yourself by staying in a dysfunctional relationship.

I know this can seem pretty harsh, but if you can’t coach with me I have to get your attention some how.

So, what now?

Well, if you’ve been following me for a while this will sound familiar….find your path with heat and start walking on it.

By finding and walking your path with heart you will be forced into looking deep inside and addressing these underlying negative beliefs that show up in your life as your relationships with money, people, your health…all those things that can help you live a life of power, purpose and passion!

Stop tolerating and start living!

We must really look at our own and others’ efforts and accomplishments and not let reputations—good or bad—rest solely on past deeds. And finally, we need to man up and take real responsibility when things go wrong, rather than mouthing insincere platitudes or ignoring the problem altogether…”

This Warrior Mind Podcast is based on Mental Strength Tip #44 – Enthusiasm and Personal Success.Warrior Mind Podcast

This Warrior Mind Podcast is to help you understand the benefits of the mental strength attribute of enthusiasm and its immense impact on your subconsciousness mind for reaching your personal goals and achieving your personal success.

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” -  Ralph Waldo Emerson

Enthusiasm originally meant inspiration or possession by a divine presence.  Johnson’s Dictionary, the first comprehensive dictionary of the English language, defines enthusiasm as “a vain belief of private revelation; a vain confidence of divine favor or communication.” In current English vernacular the word simply means intense enjoyment, interest, or approval.

Originally, an enthusiast was a person possessed by a god. Applied by the Greeks to manifestations of divine possession, by Apollo (as in the case of the Pythia), or by Dionysus (as in the case of the Bacchantes and Maenads), the term enthusiasm was also used in a transferred or figurative sense. Socrates taught that the inspiration of poets is a form of enthusiasm.

  • Make your job more rewarding
  • Build self-confidence
  • Calm your tensions
  • Give you insight into your problems
  • Kindle the powerful motivation that makes things happen

Enthusiasm is natural and it can also be activated by programming your mind.  The subconscious mind simply responds to consciousness programming and does not have the ability to judge whether something is natural of self-created.

Make no mistake, enthusiasm can be coached and it can be programmed.  Stay strong if you think you don’t or can’t get enthusiasm.

Sometimes all a person needs is an awakening to their own personal power to able to light the fire of enthusiasm.

I was recently reading a story about a gentleman that attended a convention back in 1918…well actually he called it a mental strength controlbanquet. Here’s the segment, I think you’ll find this pretty interesting…

“I attended a banquet of inventors recently. Each inventor gave a short talk on something he thought would be accomplished in the future. Many very much-needed things were spoken of. One inventor spoke of the possibilities of wireless telephone. Distance, he said, would shortly be annihilated. He thought we would soon be able to talk to the man in the submarine forty fathoms below the surface and a thousand miles away. When he got through he asked if there were any that doubted what he said. No one spoke up.

This was not a case of tactful politeness, as inventors like to argue, but a case where no one present really doubted that the inventor’s vision would, in the future, materialize.

These shrewd men, some real geniuses, all thought we would in time be able to talk to those a thousand miles away without media. Now, if we can make an instrument so wonderful that we can send wireless messages a thousand miles, is there any reason why we should not through mental control transmit messages from one person to another?”

Pretty amazing don’t you think?

For one, back in 1918 a few individuals already had the vision of the cell phone. Then they also had the comprehension that the cell phone was no different from using our mental strength and focus to communicate, without words, to each other.

In fact the cell phone, in many respects is harder and more cumbersome for communication than that of projected thought.

I believe that someday business will look at how well a person can send out “influences.” These influences will be so dominating that others will be partly inspired by them. Then the business will grow and profit by the use these mental strength powers and depend on them to draw all resources required to achieve their goals.

Of course, this really happens now on a personal level. You are constantly sending out suggestions to your coworkers, family and friends…but what type are they? Empowering or disempowering?

We all are receiving these messages unconsciously and if yours are coming from your soul, yours will be received “stronger” than others.

This is being done today in business. Look at Apple, Google, etc. They are finely organized companies that secure and combine the talents of all their employees.

Sure, each person may have a different and unique role, but the synergistic effect manifests amazing results.

The whole atmosphere of the company is impregnated with a high standard of excellence. Everyone feels they must do their best. A person could not be in these surroundings and be satisfied with doing anything but their best work.

A business will succeed only to the extent that the efforts of all are coordinated towards one result. And at least one person is needed to direct and coordinate everyone toward the desired end. The person at the head doesn’t have to outline exactly what each person is to do, but they must possess the mental strength power of influence.

An influential business communication, i.e. e-mail, blog post, etc, is not written in a casual, commonplace way, instead the writer tries to convey something they think the receiver will be interested to knowing or finding more about.

In this way the message awakens a responsive spirit. Sometimes just the addition of a word or two will change a message from a matter-of-fact style to one that compels and inspires a response. It’s not always what that actual words are in the message, but the spirit which it breathes that brings results.

“That intangible something that defies analysis is the projected thought of the master that brings back the harvest that it claims.”

Personal success isn’t just for you, you have family and friends that desire to reach their personal goals and personal success right?

Well, if you’d like to assist your friends or family with their personal success simply use your mental strength and picture them being successful.

If they have a weakness of some kind, imagine it as being strengthened; think of their shortcomings, which belong to their negative nature, as being replaced by positive qualities. Take a certain part of the day to send them supportive thoughts.

By doing this you will “awaken” their mental strength powers and bring them “online.” And once awakened they’ll begin to assert themselves on the persons thinking.

You Can Accomplish Much More!

We can manifest and accomplish much more than most of us are ready to believe by sending to others our direct, positive and influencing suggestions of personal success. To some extent whether a person achieves their personal success is significantly determined by the way they act on the suggestions they receive.

We are either advancing towards our personal goals or retreating from them. We never stand still. Every time we accomplish something it gives us ability to do greater things.

The bigger the attempt (goal), the greater the things will be accomplished in the future. As a business grows, the head of the business also has to grow. They must advance and be the ever guiding influence. By their power to influence, they inspire confidence in those they associated with.

Through your mental strength power you can generate in others enthusiasm and the spirit of success, which then will inspire them to take on great personal goals.

In concentrated mental control, there is a latent power more potent than physical force. When you become of this “attitude” of the mind you have access to the power of controlling, directing and governing other forces. You will have a mental strength mindset that will assist you in reaching your personal goals and achieving personal success.

All of us no matter how mentally strong we are, are affected by the mental forces of our environment. There is no one that can remain neutral these influences. The mind cannot be freed from the forces the surroundings.

If the environment of your place of business is not helpful, it will be harmful. That is why the environment, i.e. feng shui, is so important.

You Can’t Live Alone

No person was ever intended to live alone. If you isolate yourself and only be with your own thoughts you suffer from mental starvation. The mind and thinking become narrow; the mental powers weaken.

Living alone often causes some of the milder forms of insanity. If children do not play with those their own age, but associate with only older people, they will take on the actions of the older people.

The same is true of older persons if they associate with people younger than they are. They take on the spirit of youth. If you wish to retain your youth you need the energy and influences of youth.

Like attracts like all over the world.

The thought element plays a great part in our lives. To be successful in your business or career you must not only know and use your physical environment, but you must also know and use our thought environment…your mental strength. There must be co-ordination of thought (internal) with the environment (external).

If you are an employer, you should aim to secure employees that think along similar lines. They will work in fuller sympathy with each other. They will better understand each other. This enables them to help each other, which would be utterly impossible if they were not in sympathy with each other.

It is this that goes to make up an effective and efficient organization, which in turn directs and influences them toward a single objective.

Instead of each person being a separate unit, each one is like a spoke in a big wheel. Each member carries his own load, and he would not think of shirking. Anyone working in such an atmosphere could not help turning out their best work.

All great leaders must be able to inspire this co-operative spirit. They first secure the resources required through their mental strength control. They then make the value of this mental strength control known to the individuals they have attracted.

Soon there is a close bond between them; they are working toward a single purpose. They profit by their combined effort. The result is that they accomplish much.

If your business is conducted in the right spirit, you can infuse your thoughts and your ideas into your employees. Your methods and ideas become theirs. They don’t know it, but your mental forces are shaping their work. They are just as certain to produce results as any physical force in nature.

The successful business person is going to take pains to assist their employees to think and reason better. Hey will not want them to become robots and non-thinking, this will lead to depression and discouragement.

A successful business person will endeavor to have their employees use their concentrated mental strength effort; this will lead to a mutual benefit and be profitable to both employer and employed. When there is more of this type of spirit in the workplace, there will be more happy employees and profitable business.

This is way personality assessments like DISC, Myers Briggs and CRG are so important, they help the business determine if the perspective employee has the “right” attitude to be a good team member.

Bad Company

You must realize that every moment spent in thinking of your difficulties of the past, every moment spent in bad company is attracting to you all that is bad; is attracting influences that must be shaken off before you can move forward.

Many firms prefer to hire employees that never worked there before so that they have nothing to unlearn. They are then not trained, but have no bad business habits to overcome. They are more easily guided and grasp the new methods more effectively because they are not contrary to what they have already learned.

They are at once started on the right road, and as they co-operate readily they receive the mental strength support of the management in learning the methods that have been perfected. This inspires confidence in themselves and they soon become efficient and, finally, skilled team members.

Most big business firms today employ efficiency experts. Each day or week they are in a different department. They earn their money because they familiarize persons with very little business experience with plans that has taken the “expert” years of training and much money to perfect.

The attitude we take has a great deal more to do with our success than most of us realize. We must be able to generate those mental forces that are helpful and supportive. There is a wonderful power in the thought rightly controlled and projected and we must through concentration develop this power to the fullest possible extent.

We are surrounded by many forces of which we know but little at present. Our knowledge of these forces is being expanded almost daily. Each year we learn more about these psychic forces which are full of possibilities of which we are not even dimly conscious. We must believe in mental control, learn more about it, and use it, if we want to command these higher powers and forces which will unquestionably direct the lives of countless future generations.

Step 4 – Building the Self-Confidence of a Champion mental strength in sports

Consistent top athletic performers have a strong level of self-confidence. They never stop believing in themselves.  This self-confidence creates an almost intimidating sense of presence.

When a top athletic performer shows up, you know it!  They aren’t bragging or strutting around like a peacock, they just have this vibe about them.

Self confidence is the fuel for success.

Here, let me tell you a story…

“During a momentous battle, a Japanese general decided to attack even though his army was greatly outnumbered. He was confident they would win, but his men were filled with doubt. On the way to the battle, they stopped at a religious shrine. After praying with the men, the general took out a coin and said, “I shall now toss this coin. If it is heads, we shall win. If tails, we shall lose. Destiny will now reveal itself.”

He threw the coin into the air and all watched intently as it landed. It was heads. The soldiers were so overjoyed and filled with self-confidence that they vigorously attacked the enemy and were victorious. After the battle, a lieutenant remarked to the general, “No one can change destiny.”

“Quite right,” the general replied as he showed the lieutenant the coin, which had heads on both sides“

This represents the power of self-confidence!

When it comes to achieving your peak athletic performance, the only thing that matters is if you believe in you.

There’s a long distance swimmer Jim “The Shark” Dryer that perfectly depicts how important belief in yourself is.

You can take a look at Jim Dryer story here

http://static.record-eagle.com/2007/mar/25dreyer.htm

Self-confidence is developed; you are not born with it.  It takes a focused and concretive effort using your mental strength to develop self-confidence.

I’ve written others post on this topic and today I’m going to go over a few other mental strength practices that are extremely effective at developing and maintaining self-confidence.

4 Mental Strength Tips To Develop A Self-Confidence Mindset

1 – Pay Your Physical Dues: If you want to perform like a champion you must first train like a champion.  You must put in the physical training first.  You have to pay your physical dues before we can even begin to talk about developing the self-confidence required for peak performance.

This part takes hard work, long training practices and even extra curriculum activities.  You must prepare your body first to do the work so that it (your body) will follow your thoughts for peak performance.

Let me tell you, nothing worth doing is accomplishing without hard work.

Do this, when you are at practice think about what your competition is doing and then do more.

If you’re not willing to pay your dues, and then some, get out now.

If, however, you’re ready to push yourself physically and mentally to reach peak athletic performance building self-confidence is essential.

2 – Find The Things Your Do Right: Starting today I want you to catch yourself and acknowledge all the things you are doing right, specifically sport wise. During your training, practice and at the end of the day purposely look for all the things you did right today.

We live in a negative oriented world and there are more than enough people out there that will be more than happy to point all the things you are doing wrong.  And many of them already do without even asking you!

They’ll point out how you caught that difficult pass for a touchdown, but you dropped the easy one over the middle.

They’ll tell you that you “lost” the race when you turned in a personal best record.

If you want to develop rock solid self-confidence you’ve got to take control of your focus and look for all the things you are doing right.

I know you’re probably saying “I can always to better right?”  “I can always improve.”  This type of thinking is trap that nothing is good enough!

With this mindset you’ll be robbing yourself the opportunity to feel good about you and your performance.   If you don’t look for the things you are doing good you will always feel lousy about yourself and this will lead to low self-confidence.

Here’s what I want you to do, beginning today I want you to start keeping a success journal and keep only positive comments and observations in it.

By the end of every day find 10 things you did well during practice, training or your game.  I want to find 10 things every day!  And keep this up even though your inner critic you’ll provide comments to the contrary.  Tell it “thank you for sharing” and keep writing down the 10 positive things from training that day.

Then one day you’ll feel your confidence lagging take out your success journal and look at all the positive things you have accomplished!

This will give a shot in the arm and boost in your self-confidence.

3 – Don’t Play The Comparison Game: Do not compare yourself to anyone else…you will always loss.  There is always someone out there better.  If there isn’t, you’ll be looking over your shoulder for the person after you.

Compare your results to you…you set your standard, and then beat it!

When you compare, you think the other person is better than you and you are much too hard on yourself and your self-confidence diminishes.

You leave yourself vulnerable when you compare yourself to others and if and when you have to compete against that person you’ll get siked out and intimated.

Let me tell you another story…

There was a samurai, a very proud warrior and he came to see a Zen Master one day. The samurai was very famous, but looking at the beauty of the Master and the Grace of the moment, he suddenly felt inferior.

He said to the Master, “Why am I feeling inferior? Just a moment ago everything was okay. As I entered your court suddenly I felt inferior. I have never felt like that before. I have faced death many times, and I have never felt any fear — why am I now feeling frightened?”

The Master said, “Wait. When everyone else has gone, I will answer. “

People continued the whole day to come and see the Master, and the samurai was getting more and more tired waiting. By evening the room was empty, and the samurai said, “Now, can you answer me?”

The Master said, “Come outside.”

It was a full moon night; the moon was just rising on the horizon. And he said, “Look at these trees. This tree is high in the sky and this small one beside it. They both have existed beside my window for years, and there has never been any problem. The smaller tree has never said to the big tree, ‘Why do I feel inferior before you?’ This tree is small, and that tree is big — why have I never heard a whisper of it?”

The samurai said, “Because they can’t compare.”

The Master replied, “Then you need not ask me. You know the answer.”

Give up the comparison habit.  Only hold yourself accountable to your results.

Here too I want you to write down (not in your success journal) how many comparisons thoughts you have each day for 10-days….really…write them down.  You see, awareness is the first step to change. And you by noticing and writing down the comparison thoughts they will soon stop.

4 – Affirmations:  Say empowering things to yourself all the time.  You become what you think about.  The topics of your conversations become the themes of your life, in this case your athletic life.

Take several 3×5 index cards and write on them how you want to feel during competition.

Then, place them around your house, the bathroom, the refrigerator, your car and even in your gear bag.

Your unconsciousness mind picks up and “sees” all these signs.   This is the same principle as advertising.  Only this time you’re self-advertising about what you really want!

Be patient with this and begin to look for the small changes and when you see them, acknowledge them.

Here’s another great mental strength technique. Before you go to sleep think of one aspect of your performance you want to change, i.e. I want to feel calm and relaxed.

Now, in your bed lie on your back with your arms to your side palms down. Then repeat the affirmation slowly and at the same time press your pinky down and visualize yourself performing like you want (calmed and relaxed).

Then, do it again, this time press your ring finger.  Keep doing this for 20 times keeping track with your fingers

If you fall asleep that’s fine.

The time just before you fall asleep is a very powerful time to reprogram your mind so make use of it.

Select one aspect of your performance your want to change and this exercise for a week and then switch.

Self-confidence for peak performance is created by hard work ethic, catching yourself doing the right things, self-advertising.

Self-confidence and peak performance comes from using the above mental strength tips on a consistent and persistent basis.   Do the above for a month and watch for the changes in your self-confidence and athletic performance.
