How is time comprehended?personal empowerment

Is it just with the aid of a wristwatch, office clock or the calendar hung on the wall?

Or is it something more fundamental than these?

Is it the cycle of the Sun as it causes the shift from day to night and back again?

Certainly these things contribute to an awareness of time passing and a method of measuring time, but the most constant reminder of time passing is probably the least obvious.

And by the end of this post you will discover a new perspective that will give you a sense of great personal empowerment!

Is time the passing of your thoughts?

Your thoughts seem to follow one another in a constant stream, and so give you an impression of time passing.

But are your impressions of time correct?

You may think of time as a constant, which started at the Big Bang and progressed relentlessly up to the present moment.

But time does not really exist in that way at all; what you think of as past, present and future actually exist simultaneously.

This may sound unbelievable because it seems to contradict all the experiences of your daily life.

However, as already shown, the way you experience your reality through the five senses is not how reality actually is.

Consider The Following Quotations From 2 Eminent Physicists

Professor Brian Greene states:

“The laws of physics treat what we call past and future on a completely equal footing. Even though experience reveals over and over again that there is an arrow of how events unfold in time, this arrow seems not to be found in the fundamental laws of physics.”

Albert Einstein said:

“People like us who believe in physics know that the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubborn persistent illusion.”

It would seem that time requires further investigation.

First, the true nature of an event needs to be considered.

An event can be thought of as any everyday experience, such as going shopping, having a discussion with a friend or going out for dinner.

Whenever you decide to do something there are always different probabilities you can choose from.

Even a mundane event such as going to the shops has several probabilities.

You can either go or not go; you can use the car or walk; you can go to one particular shop in preference to another.

These are just a few of the probabilities you can choose to experience in your ‘physical’ reality.

However, the true nature of an event is that, at some level of reality, all the probabilities exist and are part of your experience.

If this still sounds incredible, then consider the words of physicist Hugh Everett:

“Quantum physics predicts that all alternative outcomes of any given experiment must occur even though we may only see a single outcome. Somehow, those hidden alternatives must exist simultaneously along with the observed outcome.”

Life is Like An Orange (not a box of chocolates)

It may help to think of an event in your life being like an orange, which is made up of a number of segments.

Each segment is only part of the orange.

It is only when all the segments are viewed together that you consider it to be an orange.

When you experience an event in your waking state of consciousness, you are actually just experiencing one segment of the event.

You experience other segments of the event in other states of consciousness, where you use time and space in different ways.

From the point of view of your waking state of consciousness you string single segments together in normal memory to give you what you consider to be your past.

This Is Very Important To Remember

All of the segments, or probabilities, that make up a particular event are determined by your personal beliefs about what is possible and what is not possible.

It follows that the difference between a probability and a possibility needs to be clarified.

In a given event there are a limited number of probabilities, but there could be an infinite number of possibilities.

As an example, in a free and democratic country it is a possibility for anyone to become President or Prime Minister.

However, it is not necessarily a probability because of other choices people have made.

Probabilities, Possibilities and Chess

To help understand these very alien concepts of the nature of an event and the simultaneous nature of time, consider the following analogy.

Imagine a large piece of material with small squares printed on it, similar to a chess board, laid out on the floor in front of you.

In this analogy each of the squares represents an event.

The squares directly in front of you represent the present time, those to your left represent the past, and those to your right represent the future.

Now imagine yourself in a God like position gazing down at the squares laid out on the floor.

From this position you can see that past, present and future exist simultaneously, because you can see all the squares and all the events at the same time.

Now imagine crouching down with your nose just a few inches or centimeters from the squared material on the floor.

From this position you can now only see one square, or one event.

You can not see the rest of the squares, although they still exist.

You can move your focus from one square to another depending on your choice of direction, but you only ever see one square at a time.

When you move from one square to another you create an experience of time passing.

The true nature of the piece of material with squares on it does not change.

This analogy gives you an insight into how reality is experienced through the five senses one event at a time.

This same analogy can be taken a little further.

Imagine returning to your God like position so that you can gaze down at the sea of squares stretching out in all directions.

Now choose just one square.

This time, instead of imagining this square to be one whole event, imagine it to be one probability of an event.

Now imagine the surrounding cluster of squares touching it on each of its sides to be the other probabilities of the event.

You can now see that if you choose a different square from the cluster, that different square touches a different set of surrounding squares.

In this analogy, the different set of squares represents different probabilities that have now become available.

As stated earlier, the probabilities that are available to you in your everyday reality are determined by your beliefs.

Change Your Square

Changing a belief is represented by choosing a different square in this analogy.

With this understanding of the true nature of an event it is possible to exercise real power and this creates personal empowerment!

Remember that all probabilities of an event do exist and are yours for the choosing.

This means that you can take any event in your so-called past that disturbs you and choose a more favorable outcome.  This is where Time Empowerment™, NLP, hypnosis and even shamanic journey work come in.

The probability that you had previously accepted as the only outcome, now takes its place in your memory as just one of a number of probable outcomes.

When you no longer attach significance to this less favorable probable outcome, it will no longer affect your present experiences.

You really can choose an effectively different past.

This is not self deception this IS personal empowerment!

Your everyday experiences will actually change in line with this newly recognized past.

Sometimes people may question why they should have had to suffer poor experiences as a child, just because they had not yet learned about how their beliefs affect their experiences.

It can now be seen that all probabilities and all life experiences are simultaneous, therefore the beliefs of your childhood are formed not only in what you think of as your past, but also in what you think of as your present and, of course, your future.

It is only because of the piecemeal way in which you normally understand reality that you think your childhood existed before your present time.

But as the new understanding of time demonstrates, it is always from the present moment that you choose your experiences, whether you call them past, present or future and these experiences are always based on your beliefs in the present moment.

It is always from the present moment that you choose what direction you will take and which probabilities you will use in your waking state of consciousness.

You do not need to believe you are a prisoner of ‘karma’, or fate, no matter what events you think have happened in this or any other life.

All of the probabilities of any so-called past event exist now and are just as real as the one probability remembered by you in your waking state of consciousness.

Your present experiences do not have to be limited by any beliefs you have about your perceived past, because you do not have a single fixed past.

Changing your beliefs in the present moment gives you personal power and sets you free to choose your life experiences.

Some questions to contemplate:

  • How do you comprehend time?
  • Describe the true nature of an event.
  • Describe what is meant by a probability and how does it differ from a possibility?
  • Describe briefly how to change the past.
  • Explain why you do not need to be a prisoner of so-called past life events?

Please let me know your answers and additional thoughts in comment section below.

Who Ever You Think You Are, You're More Powerful Then That

  • Former Senator Moynahan gave a speech at the Harvard commencement in June of 2002. One of his statements struck me particularly hard. He said, “You are entitled to your own opinion…but you are not entitled to your own facts.”
  • Fact Impact

New study of the brain shows that facts and beliefs are processed in exactly the same way. – http://www.newsweek.com/2009/09/30/fact-impact.html

We all have beliefs, they are not good or bad, and they either support you in helping your reach your desired goal, or keep you from it.  I’ve heard many people rephrase their beliefs under the disguise of “speaking their truth” thinking that because it is their truth it MUST be fact.

Facts cannot be changed but beliefs (speaking one’s truths) can be changed.  Take weather as an example.  Let’s say right now it’s 30°f outside, which is a fact that cannot be changed (unless you’re outside the USA and then it would be -1°c). It’s 30° cold or mild?  It depends on your perception of temperature.  If you’re from Toronto, 30° is mild.  If you’re from my Miami, you’d probably say 30° is cold.

So, is 30° mild or cold?  It depends on your perception…or belief.  In the mental strength process we call this “perception of truth.”

Most of us spend much too little time separating our beliefs from our preferences from facts about reality. We tend to think that our beliefs are grounded in facts, despite repeated evidence that they rarely are. Beliefs get us into more trouble than preferences, or as pioneering blogger Mark Twain put it “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.”

Nice example of this crossed my path recently, from some research conducted by two Harvard Business School Professors on wealth distribution.

  • The top bar shows the world as it is.
  • The middle bar shows the world as people believe it to be.
  • The bottom bar shows what wealth distribution people would prefer.

What you think, what you want, and what actually is: three important dimensions of reality that rarely coincide.

My goal here is to help you FIRST realize that that most facts are actually beliefs, and you have the personal power to upgrade those truths to philosophies that can serve you and help with your personal development…rather than limit you.

Use this technique as an ongoing process to until you begin to challenge your thoughts and ask “Is this a belief or a fact?” Then ask “How do I know?”

Average thinkers refuse to consider the idea that many of the things that they see as facts are actually their beliefs.  The average person connects the dots of life through things they believe as facts, and will strike back out of fear when challenged.  Remember that comfort is the mantra of the average thinker, and anything or anyone that jeopardizes their beliefs will incur the wrath of a frightened threaten individual.

In order to increase you mental strength and achieve your personal success you will have to develop the art and science of self questioning.  The more you ask, “Is this fact or just my truth?” the more you will open yourself to additional possibilities to achieve your goal.

Let me know in the comments below what’s one thing you thought was fact that after you questioned it, it turned out to be your belief.

My earlier post, “The Nature of Reality and Your Personal Success” can perhaps best be summarized in the words of beliefsthe physicist Professor Amit Goswami in stating

“Matter, energy and consciousness are the same thing.”

Professor Goswami goes on further to say:

“Everything, including matter, exists in and is manipulated from consciousness. This does not mean that matter is unreal but that the reality of matter is secondary to that of consciousness, which itself is the ground of all being, including matter.”

To help further understand consciousness as the ground of all being, which includes what is thought of as personal consciousness, consider the following analogy.

Imagine consciousness, which is the ground of all being, as an ocean.

An ocean is made up of molecules of water, each of which has its own individuality but at the same time is an part of  body of water.

In the same way, personal consciousness has its own individuality but at the same time is an part of the ocean of consciousness.

To help define personal consciousness, a little further, consider the dream state.

When you are in the state of consciousness, called dreaming, you still keep your sense of identity.

In other words you still feel like you.

You even have a sense of body image, which you find as being you.

Therefore, you interact with anything that you do not consider as you, as if it is separate from and independent of you.

In the dream state of consciousness you make this differentiation between you, and not you, even though this cannot be the case because all images in your dream are part of your personal state of consciousness and must be part of you.

Understanding this last point is extremely important because you also from all images in your waking state of consciousness using the same beliefs about what is you, and not you.

This is, perhaps, a difficult concept to completely grasp at this stage, but it will become clearer as you progress through this information.

Ponder for a moment what was explored in an earlier post about the dream state of consciousness.

It was clearly shown that thought, is energy, and is extremely powerful and creative.

While in your dream state of consciousness you create a whole reality of seemingly separate objects and people and then interact with them.

The reality you create is so convincing that whilst you are focused in it you are unaware that it is being created by you.

It is so convincing that you can even create and experience emotions such as fear, anger or happiness.

To develop this concept of the creative power of thought requires a consideration of the term a belief.

The dictionary defines a belief as something you accept to be true.

However, just because you accept something to be true, it does not mean that it is actually true.

In other words, in the light of further information, you may need to revise your beliefs.

Here are some examples of beliefs that you may have changed in the light of further information:

Most people, as children, used to believe in Santa Claus, but stopped believing in him when they were told that he did not really exist.

Again, many people were taught, and probably still hold the belief today, that Christopher Columbus discovered America.

But, actually, what he discovered was the West Indies.

He was trying to find a western passage to India, which is what he thought he had found, and that is why those islands are called the West Indies even to this day.

The person who was credited by the cartographer Martin Waldseemuller with the discovery of America is Amerigo Vespucci.

Some sources suggest that it is from his name that the name America is derived.

In the light of this information some people may have just changed a belief that they have held for years.

Some beliefs, like the last one perhaps, are easier to change than others.

However, some beliefs about life are so ingrained that people think they are facts about life, and not just beliefs about life and this can inhibit their personal development.

This is a very important point to bear in mind.

It is very useful to make a list of your beliefs.

Regularly reviewing your list will show you how your beliefs are changing and which items on your list are facts and which ones are just beliefs. This process WILL help in your personal development.

If you are having a little trouble starting your list, then consider if you hold the following belief.

You may believe that:

  • As you get older it is inevitable that you become frailer and weaker.

Remember that a belief is something you accept to be true, but information gained later may show it not to be true after all.

Here is another question about beliefs you may hold.

Would you agree that:

  • People generally feel they are victims of circumstance; that life ‘happens’ to them, mostly outside of their control?

But, what if being a victim is based only on a set of beliefs?

You may find this quite a challenging statement.

However, remember what has been stated about a belief being something you accept to be true, but may not be.

You may believe that you live in a world of facts.

Therefore, it may be difficult to accept that your knowledge is largely a collection of beliefs about life and not a collection of facts about life.

Feeling that they are facts about life is what causes the most problems.

Once you realize you are dealing with beliefs, rather than unchangeable facts, then your intellect can accept that it is possible to change them, and personal development is all about change.

If you wish to change a particular circumstance in your life you first have to be very sure whether you are dealing with a fact about life, or just believe it is a fact about life.

Once you are sure of this, you also need to understand that there is a difference between a want and an expectation.

A want is best described as something you hope will happen, but have no certainty that it will.

An expectation, however, is having complete certainty that what you want to happen will happen.

Desire can be transformed into definite expectation, but desire on its own is not enough to bring about the required change in your personal experiences.

It is easy to confuse a desire, with an expectation, and therefore become disappointed when you do not seem to get the outcome you want.

The procedure for changing beliefs, and therefore your experiences, has to start from a fundamental understanding of the difference between a fact and a belief; and between a desire and a definite expectation.

The methods for changing beliefs may be different for each person and can vary from using such techniques as visualization to writing lists.

It is best to use whatever technique feels right for you and to remember that only a full expectation of the required change will make it happen.

With this understanding you can start to accept new beneficial beliefs in place of old limiting beliefs.

You can then conduct your daily life in the secure knowledge that your experiences will fall in line with your new beliefs about what is possible.

Consider again the belief in being a victim.

Feeling like a victim of some sort can take many forms and is usually built on a collection of personal beliefs, but there are a couple of fundamental beliefs that will always be present.

They are the beliefs that it is possible to be a victim in the first place, and that there is a world that is solid, separate and external to you and therefore outside of your control.

As you become more confident in the knowledge that you only experience what you believe is possible, then you will experience fewer instances where you cast yourself in the role of victim.

You should be gentle with yourself as you build your confidence in consciously instigating the experiences you want.

You may wish to start by changing what you consider to be some small aspect of your personal experiences.

As you see the required changes come about, it will give you the confidence to tackle what you consider to be more difficult challenges.

When goal setting, it is important not to limit yourself by insisting on too much detail as to how and when you will create that experience for yourself.

To help with this, it is advisable to focus on the personal goals and not the obstacles, and keep in mind the difference between a desire and an expectation.

A core belief of expect the best, will ensure that whatever happens, it will be the best, even if intellect cannot see a logical way forward.

To further understand the power of belief, consider the use of placebo pills and placebo surgery by the medical profession.

A placebo pill is just a sugar pill with no real medication properties.

It is administered to the patient as if it is a specific drug with precise medical value which is expected by the patient to have the desired effect.

The patient believes in the doctor and believes in the treatment.

The effectiveness of these sugar pills is quite remarkable.

They have been used to treat all kinds of illness, including cancer.

Even more astounding is the result of a major trial here in the US on the placebo effect of surgery for arthritis of the knee.

A team of surgeons in Texas tested the procedure by performing the surgery on 180 patients with osteoarthritis in the knee.

Two-thirds had two different types of the surgery.

But for the remaining third of the patients, the surgeons went through the motions by giving a tranquilizer, making three incisions and pretending to do the surgery.

All participants in the study had to sign their chart to show that they understood they might receive the placebo surgery, which would not help their arthritic knee.

Most arthroscopic surgery on the knee is done to repair injured ligaments and cartilage, which doctors say is useful.

The experiment was designed to see whether the surgery helped reduce pain and increase mobility in patients with an arthritic knee.

The researchers found patients who underwent the placebo surgery were just as likely to report pain relief as those who received the real procedure.

It seems that for osteoarthritis patients, the relief is all in their heads.

Dr. Bruce Moseley, an orthopedics professor at Baylor College in Houston and one of the study’s co-authors, said

“I don’t believe that arthroscopic surgery for osteoarthritis of the knee is any more beneficial than a placebo effect, and I don’t recommend it.”

Further evidence was shown on a television program in the UK made for the BBC’s Open University.

The researchers found that the effectiveness of all medicine, orthodox and alternative, is certainly partly due to the ‘placebo effect’, meaning that if you believe something will do you good then it most probably will.

The program continued by saying that the placebo effect could demonstrate the power of a person’s mind and body to heal itself, thus further illustrating how the importance of expecting a positive outcome plays an important role in the effectiveness of both alternative and orthodox medicine.

To expand the placebo effect to the area of diets, consider the statement that if diets really worked, there would only need to be one diet and it would work for everyone.

As stated by Prof. Fletcher, Dr. Pine and Dr. Penman

“Diets are so ineffective in controlling weight that around 95% of people who go on one end up just as fat a year later (and sometimes fatter too).”

In a 20 year study of behavioral flexibility in British Universities and for the UK’s Medical Research Council, Professor Ben Fletcher, Dr Karen Pine and Dr Danny Penman discovered that the more flexible your behavior, the more weight you will lose.

What is really amazing about this study is that weight loss or gain had nothing to do with food consumption.

This is a powerful example demonstrating that ‘what goes on in your mind determines your physical experiences‘.

As further examples of how your health is affected by ‘what you think’, consider the following medical research findings.

Steven Greer and his colleagues of Kings College Hospital medical school in London conducted a study on breast cancer.

They found that patients with ‘fighting spirit’ or ‘denial’ were more likely to be alive and relapse-free five years after diagnosis than patients who resigned themselves to the disease.

Further to this, in a study by Brenda Penninx and her colleagues on the relationship between depression and cancer, it was found that chronically depressed non-smokers were more likely to develop cancer than smokers.

In addition, a great deal of study has been carried out on how ‘natural killer cells’ in the body’s immune system are affected by stressful periods in a person’s life.

It was clearly demonstrated that the effectiveness of the ‘natural killer cells’ was reduced during periods of high stress.

These findings are supported by an experiment conducted on a group of dental students.

Small holes were made in the roof of the mouths of a group of students, once during a holiday period and once just before their exams.

The wounds took on average 40% longer to heal around exam time than they did in the more relaxed holiday period.

Not only do your beliefs affect your health, they also affect how long you live.

Daniel E Moerman, PhD and Wayne B Jonas MD were able to show that non-white Chinese Americans die much earlier than would normally be expected if, according to Chinese traditions, it was indicated that they had an ill fated combination of birth date and disease.

They demonstrated that the more a person believed in the traditional Chinese culture, the more pronounced the effect.

The differences in life span, up to 6% or 7%, were not due to having Chinese genes but to having Chinese beliefs.

This powerful example shows the dire consequences of erroneous and often hidden thought patterns.

The placebo effect shows that there is more to human health and wellbeing than is currently explained by either orthodox or alternative medicine.

The conclusion that can be drawn from these examples is that the patients, powerful beliefs were the only factor at play in bringing about very real medical changes.

There are many such examples in medical journals from around the World.

The power of belief is so well-recognized by the medical profession that the prescription of placebos continues on a daily basis by many doctors.

The use of placebos is a very practical example of the power of your beliefs.

Understanding the power of your beliefs is crucial to understanding how you instigate your personal experiences.

Your everyday reality is a state of consciousness in which all your experiences are based on your beliefs about what is possible and what is not possible.

This concept will continue to become clearer throughout future posts and provide you with the ability to gain more creative control over every aspect of your life and assist in your personal development.

I’d like finish with some reflective questions:

  • How do you think a though is transmitted between people during telepathy and why does distance seem to have no effect on it?
  • How does the creative power of thought work?
  • How would you define what a belief is?
  • How would you define the difference between a belief and a fact?
  • How do placebo pills and placebo surgery work?

OK…your thoughts?  Please share in the comments below.

In these next series for personal development and personal success I like to talk about my favorite subject…beliefs!beliefs

This is a topic so large that I don’t pretend to know all there is to know about beliefs.  I’ll only be scratching the service here and there are others out there that have more experience at beliefs then I do.  But since thoughts, i.e. beliefs are the cornerstone of my coaching model I did want to share some information with you.

My goal is to give you enough information over the next few weeks that you will become aware and start to questions some, if not all, of your beliefs.

We are complex creatures. From the time that you were conceived to this moment when you are reading this post you have developed thousands of beliefs. Think of these beliefs as you would an iceberg. Some of the beliefs you can see, floating on the surface, like the part of the iceberg that can be seen above water. But most of the beliefs lay below the surface; we can‘t see them, but they are strong and powerful.

Remember the movie “The Titanic”, or the moment in history that the movie was built around, the iceberg was not seen and as a result a ship went down and many people lost their lives. Yet the ship was supposed to be the latest in design and some even said unsinkable. The iceberg however changed the history of the Titanic. Unconsciousness Beliefs sit below the surface just like the iceberg. They are the very core and strength of who you are…after values. They are you. Seeing them becomes very difficult. It is like trying to separate ourselves out from ourselves, which we know makes no sense and is not possible…isn’t it? So why even bother thinking about these beliefs if they are who we are and are so deep within us that we can‘t see them anyway?

Happiness, achievement of goals, personal success, fulfillment, utopia, is achieved by being aware of who we are. Knowing our beliefs means knowing who we are. Self awareness is a life time journey of understanding what makes us tick. The more we know about ourselves the more we can consciously decide what we want to continue developing in ourselves or what we find doesn‘t support our future personal goals and personal development.

It is a bit like renovating a building. The foundation stays in place but the bricks and walls are knocked down and a new design is created. An architect may need to reinforce the foundation or rebuild part of it. If an architect doesn‘t know exactly what constitutes the foundation, then the new design may tumble down and be destroyed, even killing passers by. Dramatic perhaps, but when we decide to map out our new goals and new journeys, we build upon a foundation that we are not always aware of. This can result in not achieving our goals or finding the journey troublesome and stressful.

A new design can only be constructed by using mental strength and on a very complete understanding of our foundation. When we want to make any changes to our lives we need to know the foundation that the changes will be built on. Knowing these changes also helps us to make sure that the foundation is aligned with the new changes or if the foundation needs to also go under a little construction. There may be some patching to be done or some complete removal of areas of the foundation to allow for the changes that are needed. However this must be done with complete understanding of what the foundation is and whether it is still aligned with who we want to be.

Our decision to renovate can be for a range of reasons. You may be deciding that you want your life to be more sustainable, or you may want to create more harmony – work life balance, you might want to achieve a new personal goal, or to reach for the stars and aim high with achieving your life purpose or you may want to be happy.

Whatever is the reason, your renovation needs to be built on a firm foundation. Knowing your foundation means that you will be building on from that point, constructing from the foundation upwards, rather than constructing from the roof first. We can sometimes be mesmerized by the height and view of things from the top. But the top is shaky if the foundation is not strong.

Self awareness is the first step to understanding what lies below the surface. It is the conscious observation of the way we think and act. It is the first step to gaining insight into what lays below the surface. Self awareness opens up an opportunity to see what the core beliefs are that drive your actions. These are the beliefs that are below the surface, or underlying beliefs. Unconsciousness Beliefs are thoughts or beliefs, which we hold on to about ourselves, our world and those around us, often without even realizing we are doing it. By looking at our Underlying Beliefs, we are looking at our beliefs and behaviors to identify how they support us to gain greater self-awareness and thus what we want from life.

The philosopher Immanuel Kant had an interesting way of describing human behavior and of tracing it back to underlying thoughts or beliefs. It goes like this:

  • I see a tiger (perception)
  • I believe that I am in danger (thought)
  • I feel afraid (feeling/emotion) I run (behavior)

Most people mistakenly believe that their behavior is based on realities. For example, “I see a tiger, so I run”, would seem to them to be a perfectly logical connection to make, but what Kant was pointing out was that it is our thoughts or beliefs about the tiger that leads to our emotions and then to our behavior. Imagine you saw the same tiger in a cage at the zoo. Running away would be an illogical reaction, and yet you may still perceive the tiger to be dangerous and you may even feel a little afraid.

The challenging thing about our thoughts and beliefs is that we carry them with us and apply them to a range of situations, sometimes without even realizing it. Often when we do something that we don‘t consciously choose, we are simply acting on the thoughts, beliefs and emotions that we have picked up somewhere else, based on other, totally different circumstances. The simple reason why we fall into situations or have outcomes that we don‘t consciously choose is that we are acting in accordance with other deeper, more ingrained thoughts or beliefs.

What is an Unconsciousness Belief?

Every moment of every day we are continuously behaving in a certain way. Our behaviors are a reflection of our beliefs. When we think or feel something, we act this out. Imagine if you decided to place a video camera in front of yourself for 24 hours to observe what you do each day.

What would you notice about yourself?

As you know we now call this reality television. Watching people in their everyday lives intrigues us as we become involved in their lives and observe their behaviors. We determine a great deal about the participants in reality television just from watching their behaviors.

Generally, we can say that we are aware of some of our behaviors since we have made them consciously. When we decide to set goals for ourselves such as: getting married; saving money; losing weight; running a marathon; buying a house; learning to play the guitar; or getting a promotion, we are consciously setting goals and then new behaviors to achieve these goals. We then begin to create a list of behaviors to achieve these goals. This is a conscious decision, an awareness of creating new behaviors or of observing existing behaviors aligned with the goals.

There is, however, another kind of behavior – other than the conscious ones we have already described above. It is the behavior that is programmed into us based on a belief sometime ago. This is an Underlying Belief that was probably picked up somewhere in our lives as a result of a totally different set of circumstances or perceptions to the ones we may find ourselves in now. These beliefs are like the iceberg; they sit below the surface and cannot be seen.

Unconsciousness Beliefs often live alongside more conscious stated beliefs with no difficulty. We may make a conscious thought and follow through on it without any problem at all. We create that thought and manage to maintain it in our lives and gain fulfilment in that area. However, sometimes our conscious thoughts can conflict with, or even be in complete opposition to a belief and this is where they become problematic.

There are times when no matter how hard we “try,” we are unable to experience that which we say we want in our lives. We set a goal, keep trying to make it happen but it just doesn‘t occur. This experience can be frustrating and detrimental to our confidence and self esteem. But rather than judging ourselves, allowing this experience to define who we are, and developing or enforcing a belief as a result of this, the key is to use this opportunity as a place of exploration. By approaching the experience with curiosity and inquiry, you can unlock the belief that stops you from achieving your goal.

Let’s look at a belief you may have around learning. Ask yourself “What type of learner am I?” Observe where your thinking goes to when you are answering this question. Are you thinking back to your school experiences, are you equating the type of learner you are with the success you had in learning? All of these thoughts are based on beliefs you have about yourself as a learner.

Some of these beliefs may have been created by other people, such as parents, family, teachers etc. They may be positive beliefs or they may be negative beliefs such as you are lazy as a learner, not able to learn quickly, that you will never have enough knowledge or that you have to struggle to learn. These beliefs were given to you by someone else. You are now at a moment in your life where you can decide if you want to keep these beliefs or recognize that they were someone else‘s and not yours and so you are no longer going to believe in them. Take a breath and let them go.

Our negative Unconsciousness Beliefs are what continually sabotage our attempts to create a truly fulfilling life. Essentially, whenever we are frustrated from fulfilling one of our conscious commitments it is because there is an Unconsciousness Belief lurking in the background.

Another way of saying this is that sometimes we don‘t achieve our stated goals because, deep down, we are more committed to a different belief or even an opposing belief. There is some belief that is yet to be discerned. It is an Unconsciousness Belief, which prevents us from getting what we want. These beliefs are not only unconscious (underlying), but they are so automatic that they drive us despite what we say to the contrary. These beliefs are working away, continually causing the kind of outcome that we say we do not want in our lives.

This is great stuff, isn’t it?

Well I’m going to leave it at this for now. I think this is enough information, if you take it to heart and contemplate it, you’ll begin to discover, or at least…get a hint of some of your unsupportive Unconsciousness Beliefs that have been holding you back from reaching your personal goals and personal success.

If you don’t want to wait for the next post on unconsciousness beliefs and start a personal exploration on your own unconsciousness beliefs request an Introductory Consolation today.

Oh yea…the e-book “Develop the Mental Strength of a Warrior” (also available in a Kindle version) goes over beliefs in more detail as well.

I’d like to thank ICA again for their support and inspiration for this topic.

OK…what do you think so far?  Please let me know in the comments below.

I recently gave a workshop entitled “Mental Strength 101.”  In it starts with a “big picture” by going over the key mental strengthUniversal Laws.  I then and work down to model of personal communication.  In between I discuss the consciousness and unconsciousness mind.

One point I emphasize is the Universal Law of Belief

The Law of Belief states that whatever you believe with feeling and conviction becomes your reality. It is not until you change your beliefs that you can begin to change your reality and your performance.

Self-limiting beliefs are perhaps the most detrimental of all thoughts, since they absolutely will keep you from personal success and peak personal performance. There is an old saying that goes “whether you think you can or you can’t, your right!” This saying is completely congruent with the Law of Belief.

Napoleon Hill describes this law in another way by saying”

“There are no limitations to the power of the mind save only those which the individual establishes for himself, or permits to be established by the influences outside of himself.

Truly, whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve!

Study well the three key words in the foregoing sentence because they epitomize the sum and the substance of this entire chapter.

Your success in the application of the mind-conditioning formula presented in this chapter will depend very largely upon the mental attitude in which you apply it. If you BELIEVE you will get satisfactory results, you will get them.

When you give directives to your subconscious mind, through the statement herein which was prepared for that purpose, you may hasten success by repeating the statement in the form of a prayer, and thereby place the entire power of your religious BELIEF back of your statement.

The word BELIEF is symbolic of a power that has no limitations within reason and we find evidence of its influence wherever we find people who have achieved noteworthy success in any calling.

Thomas A. Edison BELIEVED he could perfect an incandescent electric lamp, and that belief carried him successfully through the ten thousand failures before he got the answer for which he had been searching.

Marconi BELIEVED the ether could be made to carry the vibrations of sound without the use of wires, and that belief carried him through many failures until he was finally rewarded by triumph, and gave the world its first wireless means of communication.

Columbus BELIEVED he would find land in an uncharted portion of the Atlantic Ocean, and he sailed on and on until he found it, despite the threatened mutiny of his sailors who were not so blessed as he with the capacity for BELIEF.

Madame Schumann-Heink BELIEVED she could become a great opera singer, although her singing teacher had advised her to go back to her sewing machine and be content as a seamstress. Her BELIEF rewarded her with success.

Helen Keller BELIEVED she could learn to talk despite the fact that she lost her use of speech, sight, and hearing, and her BELIEF restored her speech and helped her to become a shining example of encouragement to all people who are tempted to give up in despair because of some physical affliction.

Henry Ford BELIEVED he could build a horseless buggy that would provide rapid transportation at small cost, and despite the far-flung cry of “crackpot” and the skepticism of the world, he belted the earth with the product of his BELIEF, and made himself immensely wealthy.

Madame Marie Curie BELIEVED that radium metal existed and gave herself the task of finding its source, despite the fact that no one had ever seen radium and no one knew where to start looking for it. Her BELIEF finally revealed the source of that precious metal.”Source: You Can Work Your Own Miracles. Fawcett-Columbine Book. Published by Ballantine Books. 1971. Pgs. 144 – 146.

Beliefs are so powerful and sometimes so mysterious.  This is way I made belief change to focus of my mental strength coaching and book “Develop the Mental Strength of a Warrior.”

When a person can absolutely change their limiting belief about something, their entire world will change!

Let me know your thoughts about belief in the comments below.

When we have a thought…a thought that is charged with emotions two things happen….the thinker thinks, the provermental strength proves.

Sounds kind of schizophrenic doesn’t it?

I’m we have two ‘selves’ that come along with a thought.

What the thinker thinks, the prover proves. The human mind can be viewed as having two main functions: a thinker and a prover. The thinker can think anything. The prover has no such choice: whatever the thinker thinks, the prover arranges all incoming information to prove that thought to be true.

No matter what it is!

So if we look at beliefs that are thoughts that are strongly held as true we can say that what the thinker believes, the prover proves.

If a person believes they are stupid, their prover will sort and filter all incoming data to prove that belief to be true. If they believe they are clever, the prover will sort and filter incoming data to prove that belief true. If you believe you will always be poor, that life is unfair, and that people are basically rotten, your prover will find evidence of those beliefs. If you believe that that you can become fantastically wealthy and achieve personal success, that life is a wonderful adventure, and that people are intrinsically good, your prover will create an iron clad case to prove those beliefs to be correct.

Of course, over time, the external reality of your life comes into line with whatever you’ve been thinking and believing. So if you’re unsure about what you believe, there’s an easy way to find out: have a look around! Your external circumstances are the physical manifestation of your beliefs.

You might even like to ask yourself what beliefs it would be useful for you to have. What the thinker thinks, the prover proves.

If you’d like some assistance with developing the mental strength to change what the thinker thinks (and believes) request an Introductory Consultation, or pick up a copy of “Develop the Mental Strength of a Warrior.”  Either one will help you take control of your thoughts and beliefs. Then you’ll be able to reach your peak personal performance and personal success.

Let me hear from you about this subject in the comments below.

Achieving peak performance and personal success begins with a mental strength mindset and empowering beliefs Coaching for Successlong before a person ever experiences success.

Objective of this Mental Strength Tip:

To help you recognize that your beliefs are the software of your minds, and that by ‘upgrading’ your beliefs you will automatically upgrade your behavior, hence your results.

Let’s Get Started:

Where do beliefs some from? The majority of our beliefs are ‘inherited’ from our parents and other authoritative figures.  As children our mind is a blank canvas, and everything we see, hear and experience has a lasting affect on our understating of how our world operates.   Unfortunately as children we don’t have the capacity to know which idea is limiting or which one is supportive.

We then spend the rest of our lives operating from these inherited beliefs, almost never stopping to question their validity or examine them to see how they are supporting us (or not) in our quest for personal peak performance.

Questions to Uncover Beliefs about Mental Strength Thinking:

  • What are three things in your work life you know to be true?
  • What would you classify as your mental strength beliefs?
  • Would you classify most of your beliefs as supportive or non supportive for your desired goal?

Unsupportive Thoughts About Beliefs

  • The majority of my beliefs are supportive; I don’t have to take a closer look
  • Beliefs cannot be changed or upgraded.  After childhood it’s too late, there’s nothing I can do about my thinking
  • I feel disloyal to my parents if I classify the beliefs they taught me a limiting

Mental Strength Thinking About Beliefs

  • It’s my responsibility to upgrade my own beliefs
  • My beliefs create my thinking; my thinking create my emotions: my emotions create action; my action dictates my results
  • Beliefs and results have a cause and effect relationship.  Average individuals create average results. Mentally strong individuals create their own personal success through peak performance

Outrageous Questions:

  • If your beliefs are supportive, why haven’t you achieved personal peak performance?
  • Would you rather hold onto your limiting beliefs or achieve personal success?
  • How successful are the five people you spend the most time with?

Reflective Questions:

  • How do you feel about your beliefs and the behaviors they are creating?
  • Do you believe it’s possible to upgrade your most closely held beliefs to be more supportive and empowering?
  • What steps are you taking to change these beliefs to become more supportive?

Mental Strength Coaching:

Be patient with yourself when it comes altering and changing your beliefs. After all, you’re challenging beliefs that have been held for a very longtime, many since childhood.  It’s going to take some time, and questioning, to raise your level of awareness around your beliefs.

The good news is you can work with more then one belief at a time.  And this is exactly what I do with my clients.   I’ll continue giving examples of what the average person and a mental strong person tend to believe about different aspects of their lives, i.e. peak performance, personal success, personal development, etc.   This almost always serves as a guide to elevated consciousness and awareness about the supportive (or non-supportive) nature of a belief.

Final Thought

The practitioners of mental strength believe in their success long before they see it.  Their beliefs lead them to do what ever it takes to reach their peak potential. They operate their lives knowing their destiny is certain and in their control.  When they encounter obstacles they rarely falter, knowing these are just signs letting them know they’re on the road to their personal success. Bumps are simply a sign and part of the journey.

Whereas the average person is shocked and stunned by setbacks, and many times quit right after the first obstacle.  The mentally strong expects these things to occur as part and parcel of their ascension to their peak performance. The mental strong know it all begins with a vision and belief system and then to take action and make that vision a reality!

If you’d like to get started on developing radical mental strength for personal development, personal empowerment or personal success, request your Introductory Consultation.

Also, “Develop the Mental Strength of a Warrior” is a fantastic e-book that helps you develop awareness, consciousness and mental strength with a step-by-step plan.

OK…now it’s your turn!  Let me know about your thoughts on this subject in the comments below.

You can think you way into or out of almost any circumstance, Good or Bad.mental strength

No action takes place unless it is preceded by thought. If you‘re unhappy with the circumstances in which you find yourself, you can improve your situation through the power of thought, just as surely as you can destroy your personal success with negative thinking. Success begins with an honest analysis of your present condition, acceptance of responsibility for your own life, and the development of a workable plan to achieve what you desire.

Unhappiness stems from a simple formula; your life condition does not equal your internal plan. When you are happy your LC = IP.

I can hear already…duh!

Well then to create alignment if your LC does not equal your IP you either change your LC or you IP.  In both cases the change MUST begin with thought.

My coaching model is based around TFAR.  Thoughts lead to Feelings; Feelings to Action; Action lead to Results, fairly basic and easy to understand, but difficult to implement.  This is where mental strength comes in, to observe and change your thoughts.  Buy doing this your results MUST change.

This then brings up an interesting question, if thoughts (which actually bubble up from beliefs) ultimately lead to results, is there a limit to what we can achieve? (Based on our beliefs and thoughts)

Here’s what Dr. Napoleon Hill had to say on this subject.

“Your subconscious mind is your hidden boss, then, and gives orders to your conscious. But your subconscious, as you surely know by reading this book, is a very special kind of boss. It will go into conference with you, so to speak, and consider changing any of its standing orders, canceling them, substituting others if need be.

Decide upon the belief you want, set it firmly into your subconscious mind, and your subconscious will thereafter instruct your conscious mind to “live up to” that belief.

Let your belief include the concept of achievement and your subconscious mind will discover ways and means toward that achievement which, on the strength of a mere wish, would completely escape you. You may talk of “good fortune” and “lucky breaks,” but what you mean is a sharpening of all your senses toward the achievement you wanta focusing of all your forces away from other matters and toward that achievement a mighty access of strength and resourcefulness a tuning in upon other minds whose aid otherwise would have escaped you and more! The best of words limp when they talk of the power of belief. Only feel your belief propelling you toward the goal of your achievement and you will know at last that an irresistible force is at your command.

Is there a limit to what belief can achieve? If there is a limit, nobody has seen that limit yet. I have mentioned often that we may at times avail ourselves of powers beyond our ordinary senses. (Not supernatural, but natural powers we are only beginning to understand.) Deep subconscious belief aids mightily in winning the aid of these unseen powers.

Once, when I was a child, I had typhoid fever the only serious illness I ever have had. I was ill for weeks without showing any sign of improvement. At length, as my father informed me years later, I lapsed into a coma. The two doctors who had come out to our farm told my father there was nothing else they could do; my end was only a few hours away.

My father walked into the forest. There he knelt down and prayed to another Doctor beyond earthly doctors. With his prayer he generated a mighty, all-embracing belief that I would recover. He remained on his knees for an hour or more, and at length a great peace came over him… that peace of mind which is the condition in which the mind words at its mighty best. And suddenly, from nowhere, and yet beyond the slightest shadow of doubt, he knew peacefully that I was going to recover.

I do not know where my father’s prayer might have been heard, nor if it was heard, nor if the mere fact of the prayer gave him the focusing and intensifying agent which is part of deep subconscious belief. But I know that when he returned to the house he found me sitting up, which had been impossible for me to do a couple of hours before. Sitting up, crying for water, and with my fever “broken” as we used to say.”Source: Grow Rich with Peace of Mind. Fawcett Crest Book. 1967. Pgs. 179 & 180.

This is great stuff, isn’t it?

I’d like highlight this sentence – “Decide upon the belief you want, set it firmly into your subconscious mind, and your subconscious will thereafter instruct your conscious mind to “live up to” that belief.”

Many people intellectually understand this but lack, or perceive they lack, the resources to make this happen.  This is where NLP, Mental Strength, Time Empowerment ® and Hypnosis come in.  By using all or a combination of these tools I’m able to assist clients in deciding on an empowering belief, one that will help create personal success and personal empowerment, and then “install” it into their subconscious.

Once that happens and the belief is “conditioned” the person get on with the business of creation.

It is quite amazing to have client come in one way (filled with doubt, uncertainty and frustration) and then leave completely transformed (confident, determined and unstoppable) achieving their personal peak potential!

If you’d like a transformation consider an Introductory Consultation, or at the very least pick up a copy of “Develop the Mental Strength of Warrior.”  Both will help you in reprogramming your mind for personal success.

So, what disempowering beliefs would like to replace?  Let me in the comments below.
