Mental StrengthWhat you focus on increases.

Yea, yea, yea…I’m sure you heard this saying a thousand times already, right? The real question is do you KNOW it?  Simply because you’ve heard something before doesn’t mean you know it.  When you know something you live it.

This phrase if a perfect example….and actually…we all do know it, we might just not understand it.

How can I say we know it?

Simple…look at you life!  Your life and all that comes with it is a direct reflection of what you focus on the majority of the time.  You just might not be aware of what you’re focusing on.  Whatever you focus your attention on over time will increase in your experience.  So now you’re probably asking, “What do I mean by focus?”

Focus is the combination of beliefs, thoughts and emotions into a single idea.

Worry is an excellent way of focusing to bring what you don’t want into your life, i.e. disease, lack, debt, etc. To attract what you do want, i.e. personal success, a loving relationship, perfect health; imagine having what you desire and feel, talk, think and move the way you’ll feel when you already have it!

You MUST use all your sense in the creation of your personal success.  Focus is not simply repeating a phrase over and over again.  It’s also not waiting for it to show up as if you are ‘attracting” it to you.

Using your mental strength you must think, act and talk as you would if you already had what you want.  You walk your walk and talk your talk BEFORE you get your personal success….this is focus!

So again, if you’re not sure what you’ve been focusing on, look around! Whatever’s been showing up in your life over time is what you’ve been focusing your attention on.

Change your focus (you’re thinking, acting and talking) and you’ll change your life. What you focus on WILL increases.

Changing your ‘personal triad” (thinking, talking and acting) is all part of personal development and personal empowerment.  Sure, in the beginning this will take a lot of mental strength.  And I assure you, the more often you focus your personal triad, the easier it will become, until one day it will be part of you.

You’ll then look around with awe at all that you have created!

If you’d like some assistance with your focus I suggest an Introductory Consultation or even the e-book, “How to Develop the Mental Strength of a Warrior.”

In the mean time…I’d like to hear about your ideas on focus in the comments below.

Here are some great mental strength tips from Jon Gordon  mental strength

9 Ways to Beat Negativity

1. Tell yourself a positive story. Life is a story. The story we tell ourselves and the role we play in that story determines the quality and direction of our life. Successful people are able to overcome adversity by telling themselves a more positive story than the rest. Instead of a drama or a horror movie, they define their life as an inspirational tale. Instead of being the victim, they see themselves as a fighter and over-comer. You may not be able to control the economy, but you can influence the outcome of your story.

2. Model yourself after success. Are there people in your industry succeeding today? Of course there are. Seek out those people in your industry and ask to meet with them. Learn from their advice and model their attitudes and actions. If they can succeed, so can you.

3. Focus on the important stuff. Tune out the negative voices and start making positive choices. What are you doing on a daily basis to grow yourself, your team, and your business? Don’t focus on the negative things other people and the media are saying. Instead, focus on marketing your business, taking care of clients, and building loyal relationships. Every morning ask yourself this question: “What are the three most important things I need to do today that will help me create the success I desire?” Then take action on those items.

4. Replace “have to” with “get to.” This simple word swap can change your mind-set and your approach to work and life. It turns a complaining voice to an appreciative voice, and acknowledges that life is a gift—not an obligation. So often we grudgingly say things like “I have to go to this meeting,” “I have to meet with this client,” or “I have to make a bunch of phone calls.” In reality, it’s not about what we have to do. It’s about what we get to do. Research shows that when we practice gratitude, we get a measurable boost in happiness that energizes us and enhances our health. It’s also physiologically impossible to be stressed and thankful at the same time.

5. Refuse to participate in the recession. Professionals who’ve thrived during past recessions continued to go about business as usual regardless of market conditions. They worked hard and focused on taking actions to grow their business. As others are paralyzed by fear, take the opportunity to charge forward.

6. Boost your marketing and advertising. It may seem counterintuitive to spend more money on advertising and marketing right now. But with so many of your competitors cutting back in these areas, this is a great opportunity to build your brand and gain market share. People are still buying and selling, and they will buy from those whom they trust and see in the marketplace.

7. Create a positive vision. Instead of being disappointed about where you are, make the decision to be optimistic about where you are going. Create a positive vision for your future and the future of your team. Vision helps you see the road ahead and it gives you something meaningful and valuable to strive towards.

8. Invite others on your bus. Invite colleagues and customers to board your bus for a positive ride. Send them an e-bus ticket at The Energy Bus. Share your vision with team members and ask them to join you in making this vision a reality. Be a positive influence.

9. No more complaining. Abide by the “no complaining” rule. When you realize you’re about to complain, replace your thoughts and words with positive actions. Let your complaints help you identify what you don’t want so that you can focus on what you do want. The key is to turn complaints into solutions.

Objective:

To help you advance your beliefs in reference to the significance of mental strength and sustained concentration. mental strength

In my experience individuals that have reached their peak in personal success and personal performance all have an immense capacity for concentration (sustained mental strength)

Getting Started

Let’s take a look at your perspective around the importance of sustained focus and get a feel for how you think about this concept OK?

If you haven’t been doing so for the past Mental Strength tips I would go ahead and start a journal.  In there write all the questions below and answer them.  When I say answer then, don’t simply answer them for the sake of getting this exercise done; answer them so that you can find out more about yourself.

After all if I were coaching you live you’d be discussing and writing the answers down :-)

Mental Strength Questions to Uncover Your Beliefs

  1. On a scale of one1 – 7, 7 being the highest, how would you rate your level of focus and discipline when it comes to sticking to a long-term goal?
  2. Why did you rate yourself at this number?
  3. How important is sustained focus and concentration to personal success?

The Average Persons Thinking and Beliefs about Sustained Concentration

  1. I can concentrate on a lot of different goals still get world-class results
  2. I’m good a multi-tasking
  3. I’m too busy to narrow my focus into a single objective
  4. It’s hard to concentrate because my life is so hectic

Warrior Mindset about Sustained Concentration

  1. Sustained concentration and laser focus on a single objective or critical to optimum success.
  2. The clarity for sustained concentration comes from selecting the single most important objective you want to focus on.  The drive comes from the passion you feel to achieve the goal.
  3. Put the goals you “like” on the back burner.  But the goals you “love” as your top priority.
  4. W.I.N is used often (What’s Important Now)

Revealing Questions

  1. Do your results show you have more interest in sustained pleasure or delayed gratification?
  2. What is your most impressive example of the time you used sustained concentration to achieve an objective?
  3. Name three objectives you have focused on and achieved in the last three years.

Reflective Questions

  1. How can you improve your ability to concentrate on an important task to its completion?
  2. How can I help you decide what your most important goal(s) of the next 12 months should be?
  3. What skills do you need to build or develop in order to develop warrior mental strength and concentration?

Coaching for Personal Development

  1. What is the single most important goal or objective you wish to achieve in the next 12 months?  This may help…identify which goal will help you move closer to the manifestation of your vision.
  2. What activities do you need to eliminate or suspend in order to focus on achieve the chosen goal?

Final Thought

Sustained concentration much be coached and achieve in incremental steps.  Remember, many of us have been raised in the age of computers, microwaves and videogames.  The younger you are the more likely you’ve been “conditioned” for a shorter attention span.  This typical mindset is of instant gratification, and if a person doesn’t get it, they’ll turn their focus elsewhere.  This is a formula for failure! It’s my job as your coach to help you break this habit and create the mental strength of a warrior so that you can achieve your peak personal performance and personal success.

Oh yea…one last item.  You do know what FOCUS stands for right?

We’ve all experienced seen it, someone driving, drinking coffee and talking on the phone, or worse yet also putting on makeup or shaving (hopeful not BOTH!).  Or maybe you’ve done this…had a glass of wine and e-mailed (this is a REAL bad combination by the way).

Then there’s the person at work; on the phone, e-mailing, IM-ing and talking to someone at their desk.

This is insanity!  We are so caught up with trying to do more that we are missing everything.  This is why I like to hold firewalks, it teaches people to pay attention, to be here now!

With all the new technology available we are making ourselves more and more accessible.  But that doesn’t mean we HAVE to respond for the requests of our time.  My belief is that this obsession with MT (multitasking) has to do with thee main issues:

1.    Fear of lack of time
2.    Projecting into the future
3.    I want to feel important

Fear of Lack of Time – This is really the cornerstone to the disease of MT.  We ALL have the same amount of time in the day.  We’ve all heard this, but how many are living it?  The reason we feel that there isn’t enough time is mainly time is due to the deadlines or “to do lists” that WE have created. If we are the author of the deadlines and lists, we can adjust them or even remove items from them…after all it is OUR list and we can do what we want with them.

I know, I can hear you saying, “But my boss is telling me what to do and by when.” Yes, this is correct and it doesn’t mean it’s true.  When people tell us what or when to do something, we still have to agree to it.

Projecting into the Future – The other reason why MT is so heavily utilized is that we are projecting into the future that we have more to do.  We only have ‘now’ to perform a task.  If we stop projecting our made up “to do list” and the deadlines into the future and concentrate at the task at hand, we would release this constant feeling of being in a hurry

I Want to Feel Important – As a friend of mine, (Michel Neray) suggests, replacing the words, “I’m busy”, “I’m swamped” or similar with “I’m important”…go ahead and try it.  Instead of responding with “I’m busy” when someone asks how are you, say “I’m important” …talk about a shock!   After all, isn’t that’s what we’re really trying to do by MT…is look (and feel) important?

There’s a phrase that I have fallen in love with, it’s an acronym FOCUS.  It stands for Follow One Course Until Successful.  This is SO powerful in so many ways, if we could only adhere to like other accomplished individuals.

Think about, how would feel if you had to have surgery and the surgeon had his or her Blackberry, a book and PC (for pay bills) in the operating room with you.  You’d probably think multitasking is a bad idea!

Look at the people how are excellent in their fields:
•    Specialized Doctor’s
•    Elite Athletes
•    Craftsmen
•    Warriors (especially in battle)

All of them practice FOCUS.

Why is there never enough time to do a task right, but always enough time to fix it?

If we, as a society, would concentrate on the single task at hand and complete with excellence, we would produce outstanding products and services.  We would then be able to decide what is really important and what is “window dressing.”  We would be forced into making decisions about where we put our attention and energy instead of doing a lot of things at once…poorly.

Yes, this takes mental strength to do, and that comes with practice.  So, my request for the next day is to FOCUS – follow ONE course until successful and sees how that feels.

To Your Inner Strength,
Gregg

PS: This post was to get you to think and question the self-imposed importance put on multitasking and “doing more”. I hope it stirred up something inside of you.  If so, please let me know on my Facebook page : http://profile.to/mindcoach
