mental strength

This is a guest post from my good friend Kasia Rachfall of Fresh Perspective Coaching Kasia and her coaching really exhibit the skills of mental strength!

How many of us have said to ourselves or someone else “I’m too busy!” or “I’ll do it tomorrow.”  You hear this everywhere!  There is really nothing wrong with being busy as long as we’re also being productive.  If we’re busy for busy’s sake then we end up going around in circles.    That’s when we begin to feel like we’re driving with our brakes on.  That’s when life gets overwhelming and no fun.

Why do we choose to keep running on this hamster wheel of busyness if we realize it doesn’t actually get us anywhere.  There could be any number of reasons.  In my opinion there are 2 big ones: some people don’t know how to get off the wheel or they just choose not to.

The people who don’t know how to get off are stuck in an uncomfortable comfort zone.  They do what they know is familiar to them and don’t know how to look beyond their immediate choices.  They may feel that this is the way I’ve done things for so long, this is the way my family did things, and so I’m just fine.  At the same time they don’t realize that they are only a shell of their true potential.

The people who choose not to get off perhaps feel that they have something to prove to the world.  They feel that they have to put on a mask and pretend that everything is working just fine even though inside they’re drowning and wishing for a way out.

I’ve noticed that there seems to be this white elephant type mentality attached to some areas in our lives such as weight management, relationship matters, and finances.  We know that many people have issues in these areas and yet no one is willing to talk about them or ask for help.  This tabooishness of these issues also keeps us stuck on the hamster wheel and we continue to do and do and do more of what we think will work for us with no results.

The consciousness of the world is shifting slowly and I believe that this white elephant will soon become a thing of the past.  More people are realizing that there is more to life than just doing things the same way all the time.  They are realizing that part of being human is to “be” and not just “do.”

The surest way to get off that hamster wheel is to just stop and be.  Take up meditation or just breathe for a while and let your thoughts drift away.  You’ll be amazed at the insights you get about yourself and your life and the guidance that’s available to you from the universe.

The next time you catch yourself stuck as a human doing just stop doing and be a human being.  Notice how your stress diminishes as you practice this more often.  If you find that you’re unable to turn yourself off and slow down but you would like to, then ask for help.  There are any number of amazing tools like hypnosis, NLP, and meditation that bring quick results to help you reach your goals.  You deserve to enjoy life and not just run through it.  How much more running on the hamster wheel are you willing to put up with before you invest in some rest?

Here is the podcast episode on self hypnosis; the notes are below the player.

Warrior Mind Podcast

Who Ever You Think You Are, You're More Powerful Then That

Note: The technique described in this article is attributed to Elizabeth (Betty)(Mrs. Milton) Erickson. I have seen it self hypnosispresented with a number of variations. It appears here in the form that I have used it and taught it to hundreds of students and clients who have found it both easy to master and highly effective.

Some Basics Premises

This self hypnosis method is based on the following premises. While there are a number of counter-examples to these notions, they will be of value in understanding and utilizing this process.  Also, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

An “altered state” of consciousness occurs when you process information outside of your primary representational system.

  • Hypnosis is a state of concentrated, focused attention.
  • Going into hypnosis involves turning your attention away from external experience and directing it internally.
  • You can trust your unconscious mind.
  • Understanding by the conscious mind is not necessary for change.
  • Let’s consider these ideas one at a time.

Representational Systems and Altered States

We process information (that is, we think) in pictures, sounds and feelings. In Neurolinguistic Programming, these sensory modalities are referred to as internal representational systems.

V – The Visual System – The external things we see and the internal images that we create. This includes remembered images (“What does the White House look like?”), constructed images (“What would it look like if it were painted with red and yellow stripes?”), as well as “live” things we see about us.

A – The Auditory System – The external things we hear, the internal sounds that we create. This includes remembered words or sounds (“Think of the Star Spangled Banner”), imagined words or sounds (“Imagine the Star Spangled Banner played on accordions”), “Self Talk”, etc. as well as all of the “live” sounds around us.

K – The Kinesthetic System – The things we feel. These can be actual physical sensations or imagined ones. Can you imagine being on a beach and feeling sand between you toes ?

Most of us have developed greater proficiency with one or the other of our representational systems though we each use all three of them. Since this is the case, an individual who “thinks” in images wouldn’t experience an altered state of consciousness simply by visualizing. However, if that same individual were to experience a preponderance of feelings or sensations, this would be unusual – an alteration of their state of consciousness. When we talk about altered states, what we’re really referring to is processing information in a different manner than usual.

Focused Attention

Stereotypical images of hypnotists holding watches or other fixation devices for clients to stare at are the result of this understanding about hypnosis. If you’ve ever had the experience of becoming so involved in television or a piece of music or a book, you’ve experienced this “naturally occurring hypnotic state”.

“Going Inside”

The experience of hypnosis is typically an inwardly focused one in which we move away from the environment around us and turn our attention inward.

You Can Trust your Unconscious Mind

You unconscious mind is “chock full” of resources. In your lifetime of experience, it has learned a great deal and can apply that learning for you in hypnosis. Your conscious mind can only process so much information at one time. Your unconscious mind is not so limited. It can think holographically and is capable of finding better solutions for you than your conscious mind. This process is designed to take full advantage of the power and resourcefulness of your unconscious mind

Understanding by the Conscious Mind is not Necessary for Change

In many self-hypnosis procedures, the participants enter a trance and then give themselves suggestions. It seems to me that if my conscious mind knew what to do about the issues that I’m using self-hypnosis for, then there wouldn’t be a need for hypnosis in the first place. In fact, it’s often the case that our conscious mind gets in the way. It is the conscious mind that says “I can’t …” or “I don’t know how to …” or “I’m not smart enough … “. Some people are surprised to hear this, but consider that if you hear your “self talk” then it isn’t unconscious. The process described below is designed to keep the conscious mind occupied so that it won’t interfere while your unconscious mind is doing the work.

The Self Hypnosis Technique

Find a Comfortable Position – Get a position that you will be able to maintain easily for the time you are going to be doing this process. It can be sitting or lying down, though sitting is recommended to prevent you from falling asleep. Get yourself centered, just looking in front of you and breathing slowly and easily. Let yourself relax.

Time – Determine the length of time that you intend to spend and make a statement to yourself about it such as “I am going into self hypnosis for 20 minutes … ” (or however long you want) You will be delighted to discover how well you “internal clock” can keep track of the time for you.

Purpose – Make a second statement to yourself about your purpose in going into self hypnosis. In this process, we allow the unconscious mind to work on the issue rather than giving suggestions throughout, so our purpose statement should reflect that fact. Here’s how I say it: “… for the purpose of allowing my unconscious mind to make the adjustments that are appropriate to assist me in _____________ .” Filling in the blank with what you want to achieve such as “developing more confidence in social situations.” I know that the text is “wordy” but that’s how I got it from John Grinder. The actual words aren’t nearly as important as the fact your statement acknowledges that you are turning this process over to your unconscious mind.

Exit StateMake a final statement to yourself about the state that you want to be in when you complete the process. Typically in hypnosis, we have heard the idea that you should come back feeling “wide awake, alert and refreshed”, but in the real world that may not be what you want. For example, if you are doing your self hypnosis before bedtime, you may prefer to come out of it “relaxed and ready for sleep”. If you’re doing it before some project you may want to come out “motivated and full of energy”. Simply say to yourself, “… and when I’m finished, I’m going to feel __________”.

The Process – The diagram below can assist you with this. Looking in front of you, notice three things (one at a time) that you see. Go slowly, pausing for a moment on each.  It is preferable that they be small things, such as a spot on the wall, a door knob, the corner of a picture frame, etc. Some people like to name the items as they look at them – “I see the hinge on the door frame”. (If you don’t know the name for the thing, try “I see that thing over there.”). These three visual references are represented in the diagram by the 3 V’s (Visual) in the top line.

Self Hypnosis Diagram

V             V             V
A             A             A
K             K             K
        V             V

             V             V
             A             A
             K             K
     V             V             V
    A             A             A
    K             K             K

Now turn your attention to your auditory channel and notice, one by one, three things that you hear. (You will notice that this allows you to incorporate sounds that occur in the environment rather than being distracted by them. This is represented by the 3 A’s (Auditory) on the diagram.

Next, attend to your feeling and notice three things sensations that you can feel. Again, go slowly from one to the next. It’s useful to use sensations that normally are outside of your awareness, such as the weight of your eyeglasses, the feeling of your wrist watch, the texture of your shirt, etc. This is represented by the 3 K’s (Kinesthetic) on the diagram.

Continue the process using two Visuals, then two auditories and then two kinesthetics.

In the same manner, continue (slowly) with one of each.

You have now completed the “external” portion of the process. Now it’s time to begin the “internal” part.

Close your eyes.

Bring an image into your mind. Don’t work too hard at this. You can construct an image or simply take what comes. It may be a point of light, it may be a beautiful beach, or it could be a pizza pie. If something comes to you just use it. If nothing comes, feel free to “put something there”. Name it as you did above. This is the first V on the “internal” side of the diagram. (I tend to see King Ludwig’s castle in Bavaria … don’t ask me why.)

Pause and let a sound come into your awareness or generate one and name it. Although this is technically the internal part, if you should hear a sound outside or in the room with you, it’s OK to use that. Remember that the idea is to incorporate things that you experience rather than being distracted by them. Typically, in the absence of environmental sounds, this is where I hear the sound of a Mariachi band. Again, don’t ask. This is represented by the first A on the internal side of the diagram.

Next, become aware of a feeling and name it. It’s preferable to do this internally – use your imagination. (I feel the warmth of the summer sun on my arms) However, as with the auditory, if you actually have a physical sensation that gets your attention, use that. This is the first K on the internal side of the diagram.

Repeat the process with two images, then two sounds, then two feelings.

Repeat the cycle once again using three images, three sounds, and three feelings.

Completing the Process – It is not unusual to “space out” or lose consciousness during the process. At first some people think that they’ve fallen asleep. But generally you will find yourself coming back automatically at the end of the allotted time. This is an indication that you weren’t sleeping and that your unconscious mind was doing what you asked of it.

Note: Most people don’t get all the way through the process. That’s perfectly all right. If you should complete the process before the time has ended, just continue with 4 images, sounds, feelings, then 5 and so on. As for your goals, trust that your unconscious mind is working for you “in the background” while you’re doing the process.

Regular practice will yield better and better results.

17th century representation of the 'third eye'...

Hypnosis with regard to sports performance is an accepted area that is used to improve the performance of athletes, both at the amateur as well as professional level.

More recently the amazing power of hypnosis for athletes has been increasingly extensively recognized here in the U.S. For many years in the Eastern European countries have utilized hypnosis with their athletes and have experienced a significant distinction in their athlete’s performance.

If you look at the top 10% of athletes what separates the elite 1-2% from the rest?

It’s not that they’ve practiced more or have more skill and talent, at this level of performance they’ve all put in the hard work and honed their skills to a fine science.

So what does make the difference?

Their mind…specifically their imagination and their use of visualization.

So, if Olympic athletes use hypnosis shouldn’t you?

Let’s look at how an athlete uses hypnosis as well as visualization.

Visualization, Imagery and Hypnosis

Mental imagery, sometimes know as visualization, is the method used to recreate experiences in the mind using information from real events. This information is stored in our memory. Dreaming is a scattered form of imagery and the imagery. The visualization of interested here is structured imagery, where the athlete uses his or her imagination in a controlled fashion to recreate specific images for a precise goal.

There is a difference between visualization and imagery. Imagery is full body sensation, i.e. see, feel, smell, and touch the experience. Visualization is only “seeing” the experience. It has been found that imagery is the more powerful of the two.

There a three main ways of imagery. 1st person, you see and experience the event thorough your eyes as you are the competitor. 2nd person, you’re watching from the standpoint of a spectator or coach, and 3rd person, it’s like you’re watching a movie, detached from the entire event.

Research has shown that the most effect perception to use is 1st person. In addition, research also shows that the more able an athlete is to control his or her imagined movements, emotions, sounds etc, the greater the potential performance enhancement.

As for hypnosis, there’s nothing mythical about it…all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The process of hypnosis is nothing more then getting the brain into the Alpha state. This is a state where there is direct access to the sub/un-conscious mind. Basically this is simply a method of inducing a state of heightened relaxation and awareness. And when achieved, provides an ideal mental environment in which to practice imagery.

Indeed, the effects of imagery can be even more powerful when practiced in an Alpha state (hypnotic).

How Imagery Works

Research has shown that visualizing a specific muscle movement (in the mind) can create electrical activity in that same muscle even though there’s no actual movement in the muscle itself! In addition, the specific pattern of muscle activity closely resembles that seen during actual movement.

So what does this mean?

  • Detailed and controlled imagery can stimulate electrical impulses in the desired muscles, and then those ‘primed’ muscles are ready for the physical activities that follow.

  • Physical skills can be maintained or even improved by proper imagery when practice isn’t possible, i.e. injury, off season, etc. Evidence also suggests that using imagery can even accelerate rehabilitation and recovery after injury.

As for the best type of imagery to use, until recently evidence suggested it depends on what you’re trying to achieve. For the acquisition or improvement of sports skills, it was thought that using an external perspective (i.e. that of spectator) was best for learning or retaining those skills. For ‘psyching yourself up’ or priming yourself for an event, an internal perspective (i.e. imagining the feelings in the muscle) produced better results.

Now, new research indicates that the best results are archived when using first person or internal perspective, although there are benefits from the second person perspective as well.

Combined with other techniques, such as the use of music, imagery can enhance performance or enter the Alpha state. Combining both mental imagery practice and physical practice can be more effective than physical practice alone. Data from various studies have also shown that mental imagery conducted in a state of hypnosis (Alpha) results in far more vivid and realistic imagery than without.

The practical use of imagery while in hypnotic (Alpha) state is numerous. It can be used for skill learning, preparation for an event, injury healing and what if scenarios.

Practical Use of Hypnosis

Aside from being extremely relaxing and enjoyable in its’ own right, hypnosis can enhance the efficacy of the imagery techniques outlined above and assist in developing mental strength, personal success and person empowerment. The heightened state of awareness that hypnosis produces will enable you to tap the power of your subconscious mind.  You experience a more vivid mental rehearsal, and so benefit from more effective ‘muscular reprogramming’, whatever your sport, occupation or goal. Remember, if you can imagine it, you can achieve it!

Before trying to master others, be sure you are the master of yourself.

As we enter our last day at NLP, Timeline Empowerment® and hypnosis training the main theme I’m taking away is….master ourselves through the discipline of mental strength and personal development and become the leader we were born to be.

When you develop the discipline of mental strength, you immediately set yourself apart from the crowd. You become a leader; mental strength thinking leads to positive and strong action, while negative thinking leads to apathy and inaction.

When you take the initiative in any situation, others will follow simply because they like to associate with people who know where they are going. In order to lead, however, you must first be willing to discipline yourself.

The first rule of leadership is never to ask others to do what you are unwilling to do yourself. You can lead only by example. Being a leader requires you to work harder and longer than the others and proving you are the master of your own destiny.

I found the below excerpt from Napoleon Hill so powerful concerning one key attribute that all leaders must have….self-confidence.

Self-Confidence Formula

by Dr. Napoleon Hill

I know that I have the ability to achieve the object of my definite purpose in life; therefore, I demand of myself persistent, continuous action toward its attainment, and I here and now promise to render such action.

I realize the dominating thoughts of my mind will eventually reproduce themselves in outward, physical action, and gradually transform themselves into physical reality; therefore, I will concentrate my thought, for thirty minutes daily, upon the task of thinking of the person I intend to become, thereby creating in my mind a clear mental picture.

I know through the principle of autosuggestion, any desire that I persistently hold in my mind will eventually seek expression through some practical means of attaining the object back of it; therefore, I will devote ten minutes daily to demanding of myself the development of self-confidence.

I have clearly written down a description of my definite chief aim in life, and I will never stop trying, until I shall have developed sufficient self-confidence for its attainment.

I fully realize that no wealth or position can long endure, unless built upon truth and justice; therefore, I will engage in no transaction that does not benefit all whom it affects.  I will succeed by attracting to myself the forces I wish to use, and the cooperation of other people.  I will induce others to serve me, because of my willingness to serve others.  I will eliminate hatred, envy, jealousy, selfishness, and cynicism, by developing love for all humanity, because I know that a negative attitude toward others can never bring me success.  I will cause others to believe in me, because I will believe in them, and in myself.  I will sign my name to this formula, commit it to memory, and repeat it aloud once a day, with full faith that it will gradually influence my thoughts and actions so that I will become a self-reliant, and successful, person.

Back of this formula is a law of nature that no man has yet been able to explain.  The name by which one calls this law is of little importance.  The important fact about it is—it works for the glory and success of mankind, if it is used constructively.  On the other hand, if used destructively, it will destroy just as readily.  In this statement may be found a very significant truth, namely, that those who go down in defeat, and end their lives in poverty, misery, and distress, do so because of negative application of the principle of autosuggestion.  The cause may be found in the fact that all impulses of thought have a tendency to clothe themselves in their physical equivalent.” – Source: Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Collector’s Edition. Pgs. 86 & 87.

This has been one of the transformation weeks I’ve ever experienced and have unshakable self-confidence that I can assist anyone who truly desires more out of life and increase their personal performance.

I’d like to hear your thoughts and comments in the section below.

Self-confidence can be described as the ability to trust oneself as well as one’s gifts. This quality is critical to a person’s successes throughout one’s lifetime. This mental strength helps people to understand that they are worthwhile and that they are able to succeed in their actions. Even individuals who do not possess this trait can start to increase their self confidence.

Without this mental strength, a number of persons are unable to accomplish life dreams. They are often ineffective in relationships, educational attempts, and work situations. They often acquire a social phobia, and tend to be awkward in social encounters. Those who do not possess self-confidence frequently be reluctant to attempt to aspire or labor toward goal accomplishment; these people become convinced that they are likely to fall short. They know that they are not as good or as capable as those around them. They usually do not succeed because of their lack of belief in themselves.

In contrast, the one who is able to gain self confidence will find himself or herself strong enough to change this painful trend and achieve a cure for this social phobia. Such a person will find that building self confidence results in amazing improvements in relationships and academic achievements. Often, an employment prospect can occur because of actions toward boosting self-confidence.

People may have failed to build self-confidence for a number of reasons. They might have had domineering parents, or been teased frequently during their school years. Many struggled educationally or socially. Others simply had difficulty making friends or encounter the reassuring support of classmates, parents, or teachers. Frequently, these individuals struggle with a self-perception of inadequacy and uselessness.

Many times, individuals who were not able to gain self confidence as children struggle with building self confidence throughout adulthood. They have been unable to learn how to affect this, and are able to learn only if they look for the assistance and support of peers or professional counselors. Too many people do not want to admit these difficulties in their lives, and merely continue to strive during their lifetimes.

A number of strategies are sometimes utilized to help individuals to build mental strength and self confidence. Many styles of counseling approaches, like behavioral therapy or group therapy, have been used to instruct clients how to boost self confidence. Numerous self-help books have been developed to coach people to improve self-confidence. Therapists even provide seminars and retreats structured to assist people gain self confidence.

Although all of these strategies may be helpful, three alternative strategies that are not difficult to learn and quite effective for a majority of persons who try them are confidence hypnosis, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and mental strength training. Professionals who employ confidence hypnotherapy and mental strength training are typically successful in coaching clients to acquire self-confidence and drastically improve both their outlooks and their abilities to succeed in life.

Classic hypnotherapy (employing post-hypnotic suggestions) can be very useful. This approach is most helpful for people who are suggestible and easily directed. This type of therapy typically is not helpful with persons who are more methodical or are critical thinkers.

Those described by the latter category, Ericksonian hypnosis or NLP therapies work much better. These approaches are excellent for effectively relating to the subconscious, which is the seat of our thoughts and feelings. This is because the resistance typically offered by analytical persons to suggestiveness is bypassed.

A tool offered through that individuals are usually taught to boost self-confidence is called anchoring. Anchoring is a normal experience. For example, if you encounter a song from the past, and have sensations of deja vu, this is because your unconscious connected the sensations in a past situation, with the music that was playing during that time. So hearing the song again, the unconscious triggers the memories related to it. So the song is an anchor for those memories.

Using the technique known as anchoring, individuals are coached to recall an instance where they did experience the emotions of confidence. As they recall and re-experience those sensations, they are taught to touch two fingers together. The unconscious then associates the feelings of self-confidence with this physical action. If the individual says that he or she has no memory of ever feeling confident, the person is encouraged to design an imaginary event where they do see themselves exhibiting confidence, and then anchor that instance of confidence.

Once they’ve anchored the emotions of confidence, when they find themselves in situations that necessitate self-confidence, touching the fingers together triggers emotions of confidence that are useful in the present situation.

Another very powerful NLP technique called the “Flash” may be utilized to instantly exchange painful feelings, which are often related to a lack of self-confidence. Because of this method, the individual diverts the visual images that cause negativity, to trigger mental images to generate a positive feeling.

For instance, the client directs the unconscious to employ the mental cues that trigger emotions of uncertainty, as triggers for mental images that trigger perceptions of confidence. Mental pictures trigger emotional reactions.

Everyone has goals, and desires. A number of persons can work toward these to achieve their desires. Sometimes, however, people permit their lack of self-confidence to conquer them. Even though NLP does not work for everyone, the vast majority of clients who try this strategy report great success in boosting self confidence. This approach is actually more beneficial than alternative approaches for most people.

Summary: Those who lack self-confidence and mental strength typically do not easily succeed in many areas of their lives. A number of factors cause persons to experience social phobias or feelings of incompetence. A number of strategies can help clients to boost self-confidence. Among them, NLP is widely reported to be very beneficial by a large percentage of people who have tried this strategy.  A different and equally successful avenue is mental strength training.

To Your Inner Strength,
