In a recent post in Discover post titled “Money weakens ability to savour life’s little pleasures” started out with:
“Today is Towel Day, where fans around the world celebrate the works of beloved author Douglas Adams, a master of witty prose and observational humour. Consider his description of money:
“This planet has – or rather had – a problem, which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn’t the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.”
I found the article interesting and frustrating at the sometime.
This continuous obsession with “money doesn’t buy you happiness” is, in my opinion, not helping anyone!
It doesn’t support personal performance or the fact the every humanitarian organization needs money to support its’ mission.
I think we all understand Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Once people have enough money to buy basic needs, get and stay out of poverty, having extra cash has little bearing on their enjoyment of life…..bull!
If we consider that we get what we focus on, what’s happening here is we are being “programmed” to focus on unhappiness and lack.
Yes I agree that anytime our ‘state’ is depended on something, we are at that the mercy of that something. If that ‘something’ goes away so does our state. So our state needs to be independent of external circumstances. Marci Shimoff discuss this detail in her book “Happy for No Reason”
I would argue that this is not an either or world…it is a ‘both’ world. Money and happiness can go together and this is part of abundance.
Instead of finding people that are unhappy and trying to tie their happiness to money, how about looking for excellence in happiness?
Look for those that have both…money and happiness.
I think it would have been interesting to see what type of background the participants had in the study. Our underlying values create our beliefs and these in turn, create our reactions or responses to situations.
In my experience many people that use money as a goal are doing this to prove something to someone and no matter what they accomplish they’re never happy.
However, when a person pursues their passion and is happy in this pursuit, money often arrives easily. So money may not bring happiness, but happiness does bring abundance.
This shift in perspective is easy…but it takes mental strength.
