Keep your thoughts focused on what you want in your life, not on what you don’t want.

We’ve just recently started to discover the internal workings of the mind; however we have long known the results of our thoughts. Whenever you focus on not missing a target as opposed to on hitting it, the outcome in many cases is miserable, for it is impossible to think negative thoughts in a positive way.

Ask any golfer who’s attempted not to miss a putt or a bowler who’s struggled not to miss a strike. Make certain your goals are specific and exact. “Making a lot of money” or “earning regular promotions” are wishes, not goals. State exactly how much money you expect to earn and when, and the specific promotion you want, how you plan to earn it, and when you expect to do so.

As Carlson Companies Chairman Curt Carlson once noted, “Obstacles are those frightening things you see when you take your eye off the target.”

If you’re target is wealth, are you focused on creating wealth…or are you focusing on not going broke?  You can only hold one thought.  Here’s what Dr.  Napoleon Hill has to say about “wealth creates wealth”

“Wealth creates wealth. A large sum of money in the hands of one man generally does not create as much wealth as does money which circulates, provided that those who handle its circulation are interested in creating wealth.

A man’s happiness and peace of mind depend on his sharing all kinds of wealth. Business relations cannot properly be described as a relationship of love between buyer and seller; yet when the idea of service to one’s fellow men comes into the relationship, much that is profitable to both parties also enters in. “A little bit of myself,” said Henry Ford, “goes into every automobile that rolls off our assembly lines, and I think of every automobile we sell, not in terms of the profit it yields us, but in terms of the useful service it may render the purchaser.” Thomas A. Edison said: “I never perfected an invention that I did not think about in terms of the service it might give others.”

The idea that a business should give its customers more than a product for a price is not new, and history proves it creates both good businesses and good customers. Good relations between an industrial employer and his employees, however, are not very old as history goes. This is natural enough when we consider that enterprises which employ people by the thousand have not been with us more than a few generations. They are a great way for the owner of the business to make money, and unfortunately many a labor force has been badly treated in the process.

In past years we have our own era of those industrial pirates who never thought of sharing with their employees the wealth their employees helped to create. While they made a great show of their money in New York, Newport or Palm Beach those men would have sneered at the idea that a society needs a large number of well-paid people who are able to buy more goods and lead better lives.

Millionaires are far more numerous today. More than five thousand new millionaires have so declared themselves on their tax returns in the last decade. Also, as I have mentioned, today’s millionaires do not seem to want the notice that rich men used to require. Most of my readers will not recognize the names of some of the present-day millionaires and multimillionaires I have cited.

Nor do today’s moneyed men seem anxious to form a definite class to which the poor may not aspire. I quote Arthur Decio, who made so much money in building and selling mobile homes: “It’s easier to get ahead than it was fifteen or forty years ago. Look at the population growth and the tremendous rise in personal income . . . . This country is just loaded with opportunities.”

So it is, and many of the opportunities would not exist if wealth were not better distributed than it used to be. Employers have seen the value to themselves, to their people and to society of taking workers into partnership with industry. A capitalist society proves over and over that it is the best way to create maximum, widespread wealth.Source: Grow Rich! With Peace of Mind. 1967. Fawcett Crest. Pgs. 80 & 81.

Let me ask you….when you pay your bills do think of it as “circulating wealth” or is it a burden and something you don’t look forward to? By shifting our perspective from spending money to circulating wealth our personal success will be dramatically affected.

This shift does take mental strength and practice and when this mindset is mastered you will actually feel the difference.  You’ll feel it when you pay for groceries, gas and even going out to eat.  When you think of these a means for circulating wealth, wealth will return to you.

Let me know your thoughts about this in the comments below.

There are several methods for changing limiting beliefs, i.e. Time Empowerment® and visualization are two great methods.   Both of these methods have a visual competent to them and may be difficult for some.

One more technique comes from Robert Dilts version of the belief change pattern.

A “belief” for this purposes is a strongly held idea about the world, about people or about oneself.  Your beliefs show up all around you in the results you create.  Take a look at your wealth, relationships and even your health.  All of these are living example of what you believe.

A great belief for the example I’m about to get into is“I know it’s not true, but I still believe it.”

Ever think this before?

The Dilts pattern, involves laying out pieces of paper in a circle on the floor and standing on them.  It’s best if you have a large open space, but even a small living room or office will work.

The rough description of the process may or may not be suitable for you to use it on yourself or someone else.  Do to the nature of the technique it’s difficult to go over the entire technique.

The labels on the pieces of paper on the floor are:

1)     Want to Believe

2)     Open to Doubt

3)     Currently Believe

4)     Open to Doubt

5)     Trust

6)     Used to believe (Museum of Personal History)

In addition, there should probably be a “meta-position” between 3) and 4) and I guess between 2) and 3). The meta-positions are simply spots where you pause to remember what’s happened so far before you go on.

After you have placed all the papers (positions) on the floor.

  1. Stand in the ‘Want to Believe’ space, think of the ‘new belief’ that you would like to have more confidence in. Holding this belief in mind move into the ‘Open to Believe’ space.
  2. Feel what it is like to become more open to believe this new belief. When you intuitively feel the time is appropriate, step into the ‘Currently Believe’ space concentrating on the new belief you want to have.
  3. If there are any conflicting or limiting beliefs that come up in the ‘Currently Believe’ space, hold them in mind and move to the ‘Open to Doubt’ space.
  4. Ecology Check: Go to the ‘Trust’ space and consider the positive intents and purpose of both the new belief and any conflicting or limiting beliefs. Consider whether there are any changes or revisions you would like to make to the new belief. Also consider if there are any parts of the old beliefs that would be worth retaining or incorporating along with the new belief.
  5. Return to the old limiting or conflicting beliefs that you left in the ‘Open to Doubt’ space, bringing the insights you had from the ‘Trust’ space and move them into the ‘Used to Believe’ space, your ‘Museum of Personal History’.
  6. Step back into to the ‘Currently Believe’ space and focus on the new beliefs you want to strengthen. Experience your new sense of confidence and verbalize any new insights or learning’s that you may have discovered during this process.
  7. Ecology Check Again: step into the ‘Trust’ space and consider the changes you have made. Know that, because this is a natural, organic and ongoing cycle, the process can continue evolve and that you can make any necessary adjustments in the future in the way that is most appropriate and ecological for you.

After going around the circle once, repeat a second time.

At each of the positions of the circle, it’s important to really experience the state that goes with that position. One of the reasons why many people have difficulty with this process is they can’t think of something they are doubtful about.

I suggest as an example “How doubtful are you that you’re going to get raise today?”  Or “How doubtful are you that you’ll hit the lottery today?”  I think you get the picture right?    Choose something that has real significance for you…something that will really let you get into the experience of being in doubt.

It’s important to note that the idea of the process is to replace an unwanted belief by a belief you want to have. A lot of traditional approaches to changing beliefs think in terms of extinction or removal of the belief or behavior. With mental strength training one of the basic rules is that the way to get rid of a limiting belief or behavior is to replace with an empowering belief, one that will assist you on taking action and creating personal success.

Psychologists say things like “It takes months to unlearn a habit.” This is simply B.S, if you replace the liming belief and habit by a more desirable one. If you find a better way to drive to work, how many times does it take before you stop automatically turning down the old street?

Not many!

The Universe abhors a vacuum and if you simply remove a limiting belief anything can and will come in to replace it.  So by replacing the belief yourself you’re taking control how you want to behave and how you want to create your reality.

To help with this process selecting a “mentor” or role model can be very useful and identify the empowering beliefs you want to install.

After a while you’ll become so proficient at this process that you’ll be able to do it in your head.  And for know I recommend actually physically performing the process.

A side note:  This process can also be used to change values….but more on that later :-)

Limiting beliefs can hold us back while empowering beliefs can help us achieve our personal success.  By using your mental strength to examine the results you’re getting you can identify those beliefs and behaviors and replace them with exciting and powerful ones!

I go into more about beliefs and how to change them in the e-book “Develop the Mental Strength of a Warrior”

Let me know what you think about this process in the comments below, or by clicking on “comment” in the upper right corner of this post.

You’ve felt it, right?

You know…how sometimes when you’re involved with something everything just flows and other things simply fades away.  You’re mind is clear, you feel great and you’re more energized after your done then when you started.

That my friend is being in “flow” and being in the flow leads to success.

People from all disciplines and time periods have been in it, felt it and talked about it.  But only a select few have been able to teach people how to get into the flow.  Probably the easiest types of people to get purposefully get into the flow are elite athletes.  They know what it feels like, and how to get into it better then most people.

For other 98% of us that aren’t elite athletes we’ll need to first describe what the flow feels like, so that you can be aware, remember it and develop the mental strength skills to access it.  One key attribute to getting into flow is to possess the skills for the task at hand.

What the Flow Flees Like

When you’re in the flow you:

  • Fell neither bored or anxious
  • Lose self-consciousness
  • Feel somehow a part of something greater then yourself
  • Are totally focused
  • Feel in control without trying
  • Feel like time disappears

These were just a few of the common feelings of being in the flow; I’m sure you’ve felt a few of them at one time or another haven’t you?

Learn to Flow

Looking at the elite athlete again as an example, they indicate that most factors for entering the flow are controllable by a developed strong mindset.

Another part of learning to flow is to know what it feels like for you.  This would mean being aware of your felling when you’re in it and afterwards.  This may sound contrary and you may be thinking “If I notice that when I’m in the flow, won’t that take me out of the flow?” …No.  The noticing is a simple glance, not a stare and actually it’s more of awareness.

Learning to flow is very much like learning anything…the more you do and notice the success the better you become.   Just like riding a bike, you didn’t know what it felt like to ride a bike before your rode a bike.  But the more you rode the better you got and now you can very easily explain what it fees like to ride a bike.  Learning to flow is the same process.

How to Enter the Flow

Two things are required to enter the flow.  The first is to have the skill needed in proportion to task.  The second are the fowling mental strength skills

  • Raise Your Attitude:  The more confident you are with your ability, the more resilient and yet realistic you are with the task at hand the more likely you’ll slip into the flow

  • Make a Plan: Clarify your long, mid and short term targets.  You’re targets have to be challenging enough to keep you engaged, but not too challenging where you get frustrated and lose interest.   Setting a goal for each step that leads your to primary target.  NOTE: Target is defined as the end result, where goal is the process or step necessary to get to your target, i.e. write a book by the end of 12 weeks.  This would be your target.  Your goals might be writing a chapter a day.  To break that goal down, write a page an hour.

  • Get Feedback: This could as simple as keeping a journey of your actives all the way to hiring a coach for accountability.  Which ever way you decide, getting feedback is critical in assisting you in finding and getting into the flow.

  • Inward Focus: By giving full attention and concentrating on what you’re doing and only on what you’re doing allows for full emersion into the flow.  Basically you want to put on mental blinders and see nothing else then the task at hand.

These mental strength skills, when practiced, will become second nature to you as you enter the flow.  But practice and awareness is the key.

The Flow Your Way

We are all unique and different, as such, not all techniques work for everyone.  Experiment with different process, i.e. play music, don’t play music.  Have something to eat, drink tea…play around with different environmental aspects that assist you in developing the mind skills to enter your flow.

Once you have found your flow, teach others to find their flow.  Nothing reinforces something better then to teach it.  By teaching others you’ll not only deepen your mental strength skills you’ll be helping someone else develop theirs…and is that what life is about…help others to live in their full personal peak potential?

The e-book “How to Develop the Mental Strength of Warrior has great exercises to help you get into flow.

I’d like to hear from you now…how do you get into flow?  Please provide your tips in the comments below.

Emotion Pattern Flow Chart
Image via Wikipedia

Without a strong foundation built on positive character traits, success will not long endure. It is virtually impossible to fake good character. Phonies are quickly spotted because they haven’t the substance and determination to maintain the charade.

Developing good character begins with a positive attitude, mental strength and self-discipline. Your desire to be a good, decent, honest, considerate person must first take place in your mind. When you make the decision to become a person of character, you will also find that you are much more willing to do the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do.

Mental strength as it applies to self-discipline is at the cornerstone of personal empowerment, character and personal performance.

Here’s a note on what Napoleon Hill had to say about self-discipline.

Self-Discipline

by Dr. Napoleon Hill

“Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you do not control your thoughts, you cannot control your deeds. Therefore, in its simplest form, self-discipline causes you to think first and act afterward. Almost everyone automatically does exactly the reverse of this. People generally act first and think later–unless they take possession of their minds and control their thoughts and deeds through self-discipline.

Control of the Emotions

Self-discipline will give you complete control over fourteen major emotions listed below. Seven of these are positive, and seven negative:

Positive Emotions

  • Love
  • Sex
  • Hope
  • Faith
  • Enthusiasm
  • Loyalty
  • Desire

Negative Emotions

  • Fear
  • Jealousy
  • Hatred
  • Revenge
  • Greed
  • Anger
  • Superstition

All of these emotions are states of mind and are, therefore, subject to your control and direction. You can see instantly how dangerous the seven negative emotions can be if they are not mastered. The seven positive emotions can be destructive too, if they are not organized and released under your complete, conscious control. Wrapped up in these fourteen emotions is power of a truly explosive nature. If you regulate it properly, it can lift you to heights of distinguished achievement. But if you permit it to run rampant, it can dash you to pieces on the rocks of failure. You should realize that your education, your experience, your native intelligence and your good intentions cannot alter or modify these possibilities.” – Source: PMA Science of Success Course. Pgs. 268 & 269

I want to point out line in particular – “You can see instantly how dangerous the seven negative emotions can be if they are not mastered.”

This is important, if not critical in moving forward in life.  But what about all the situations where these negative emotions occurred, what’s a person to do?

In Huna this past negative emotions are described as “little black bags” that we carry with us in our body.  And until we release them we will take them forward with us into our future.

Even if we begin to master thoughts and emotions from now on, we’re still carting these “black bags” with us.

This is where Time Empowerment® comes in.

With Time Empowerment® a person can systematically go back and release the original occurrence where one felt anger, sadness, fear or guilt (each emotion is released separately).  When the origin of negative emotion is released all the subsequent occurrences of that emotion is released as well.

The feeling after all emotions are released is difficult to explain, but it comes close to “bliss.”  The after the emotions are cleared mastery of them will be easier.  Sure it will take mental strength and discipline and the payoff will be huge and reflected in your personal perfromance!

So…let me ask you, what’s your plan to naturalize your negative emotions? What has worked for you?  Let me know in the comments below.

I’m going to take a break today from posting about my NLP training…even though it is so powerful, and finish a post I started last week – The Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind – Part I

When we understand what drives the unconscious mind, that is, what are its’ critical responsibilities, we are then better able to work with it and affect lasting change.

To continue….

Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind # 11

The Unconscious Mind enjoys serving, and it needs clear orders.

The Unconscious Mind needs really clear orders to follow. The problem is that most people give the Unconscious Mind inconsistent orders. You know, like one day … “I’m looking so handsome and so beautiful” and the next day you look in the mirror and say … “Oh God, I look awful.” … and the poor Unconscious Mind gets confused. Or, one day, “I’m a great person,” and the next day, “I’m no good” … and the Unconscious Mind gets confused and isn’t sure what it should do.

One of the most important things we can do, with regards to this Prime Directive, that is, that since ‘The Unconscious Mind enjoys serving, but needs clear orders to follow,’ one of the most important things that we can do, is to give our Unconscious Mind consistent direction … consistent directives.

Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind # 11

The Unconscious Mind controls and maintains all perceptions.

This includes both those which are regular, and those which are telepathic, and it receives and transmits these perceptions to the Conscious Mind.

Anytime we want to increase our ability to perceive, we would work with the Unconscious Mind. That means that you could talk to the Unconscious Mind, and ask it to increase the perception, even regular perception, such as vision, or hearing. You can ask the Unconscious Mind, and the Unconscious Mind will improve the hearing or the vision if you simply work with the Unconscious Mind to have it do that.

Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind # 12

The Unconscious Mind is in charge of the generation, the storage, the distribution and the transmission of energy throughout the body.

So if someone does actually want more energy, or feels like they have low energy, the Unconscious Mind can be encouraged, and given the opportunity to increase the amount of energy and the low energy symptoms can certainly be decreased dramatically, or it can even disappear.

Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind # 13

The Unconscious Mind is in charge of instincts and generating habits.

Those are two different things by the way. Let’s talk about instincts first. Instincts include thing like the Fight-or-Flight Response. That’s an instinct. If you are threatened, what will happen is that the flight or fight response will kick in, and you’ll choose one of those. You’ll choose either ‘fight’ or ‘flight’ and the Unconscious Mind will simply kick in and you will either get out of the way, safe by running, by doing ‘flight’ … or you’ll stay there and fight.

In addition the Unconscious Mind is also in charge of generating habits. There can be Good and Bad habits… and typically the Unconscious Mind will need repetition, until a habit is installed.

Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind # 14

The Unconscious Mind will need repetition, until a new habit is installed.

Changing Strategies using NLP, or Swish Patterns, often change habits by themselves, and therefore, the Unconscious Mind will not need that much repetition if we are using NLP to change a habit.

Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind # 15

The Unconscious Mind is programmed to continually seek more and more …

This means there is always more to discover. The Unconscious Mind generally functions by comparison, and each time it looks for a little bit more … and more.

Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind # 16

The Unconscious Mind functions best as a whole, integrated unit, and that means that it does not need Parts to function.

This is also one of the Presuppositions of NLP, which maintain that all procedures should increase wholeness. It is best to have an integrated wholeness at the unconscious level … not fragmented into Parts, but an integrated wholeness. This involves Parts Integration, to increase that. Any time you have ‘incongruence’, Parts Integration is the answer.

Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind # 17

The Unconscious Mind is symbolic. It uses, and responds, to symbols.

In western Psychology the first person to discover this was Carl Jung, and in his book ‘Psyche and Symbol’ he was one of the first to point out that the Unconscious Mind works and thinks in symbols and responds to symbols.

This is important regarding your memories of your past. A lot of what the Unconscious Mind gives us may be symbolic, and may actually not be the event or item which is represented. You can test this out yourself. Ask a brother, or a sister, or one of your other family members, about their recollection of a major family event. More than likely, it will be totally different from yours. What you remember is simply what you remember, and usually, what you remember is a symbolic representation, and not an actual representation of what really went on.

Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind # 18

The Unconscious Mind takes everything personally.

This by the way, this is basis for what psychologists mean when they say that ‘Perception is Projection’. The Unconscious Mind takes everything personally. Every time you look outside yourself, and you point the finger at someone else, and say … “That’s not me, that’s that person …” and so forth … your Unconscious Mind thinks you are thinking that of you.

So the unconscious takes everything personally is like a double edged sword. It’s actually both good and bad. It’s good if you can get in control of your thinking. Dr Tad James tells a story of a famous Swami who told him to “See everyone as being divine!” … and Dr James thought to himself “Wow! How can he say that? Does he even mean the bum out on the street outside here … that this person is divine?” … and of course, he did mean that. It’s a great meditation, because if you see that person as divine, then you see yourself as divine.

Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind # 19

The Unconscious Mind works on the principle of least effort, it works on the path of least resistance.

The Unconscious Mind will do as little as it possibly can, to produce the kind of results you’ve asked it for. That’s important because it means we need to pin down the Unconscious Mind when we are asking it to make change. Always remember that “the Unconscious Mind works on the principle of least effort, it works on the path of least resistance” and that simply means we need to get real specific with the Unconscious Mind, so that we pin it down as to where it’s going and what we want it to do.

Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind # 20

The Unconscious Mind does not process negatives.

If I say to you … “Don’t think of a blue tree!”, of course you’re thinking of a blue tree. So we have to be careful to suggest to people that they make the kinds of changes we want them to make. Now we could tell them what ‘not to think’… for example, I could say to you … “I don’t want you to think it will be really, really easy for you to make this change.” … and of course your Unconscious Mind will pick up… “it will be really, really easy for you to make this change”… and hear that, primarily over and above when I say … “I don’t want you to think that”. This is a very important Prime Directive, because it allows us to utilize the way the Unconscious Mind already thinks, in the process of being able to make change.

I go over some of these directives and how to utilize them in my e-book “How to Develop the Mental Strength of a Warrior.”

Let me ask you…how many times when you’re in an uncomfortable situation and get caught up in fears, worry and doubts that you wish you were someone else?

Many times, we think and believe that if were someone else, i.e. John at work, Paula at the gym or your brother or sister, we’d be able to handle the situation better.  When in reality that “someone” else feels the same way when they are in their “uncomfort zone.”

You spot an attractive person at an event talking to a few people. You think to yourself, “They look so calm, confident and have it all together.” But if you could climb into their mind you’d see a bunch of dark clouds of thoughts.  You might just be amazed that they’re thinking “I wonder what they think of me?”  “I hope I’m they like me.”  “I know I should have worn something else.” And a myriad of other thoughts filled with doubt.

We see a successful young business entrepreneur and say “Wow, the world is their oyster…they can get anything they want!” Yet at home they stare in the mirror and murmur “My nose is too big… I wonder why my friends don’t return my calls…I hope my brother/sister sees me as a success.”

Isn’t it funny? We look at other people with awe and envy thinking they have it all together and wish we could trade places with them, when at the same time they’re doing the exact same thing!

Many times we are insecure of other people who themselves are insecure of other people. We often suffer from low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence and lose hope in personal development because we are living a life of quiet desperation.

Granted, this doesn’t happen all the time.  But I’d say that if you really observe your thoughts, that several times a day some unsupportive thought will ooze its’ way into your conscious releasing its’ toxic waist into your life limiting your personal performance.

One key to personal empowerment is to find a coach that you trust and confide in.  A good coach can assist you in examining your thoughts for validity and neutralizing the unsupportive ones.

Or you can find someone who you have faith in and open up to them.  In this way, the other person will obviously know that you are interested in the process of personal development and help you as much as they can. Sure, this person might not have the personal development training and techniques that a certified coach has, but at least you’ll be taking action.

Then return the favor.  I’ve found that I tend to “teach” what I need to learn.  So, by assisting your friend you’ll actually be learning more about yourself.

If you feel uncomfortable with taking to friend and you can’t find a coach you can connect with – have your tried me yet :-) – then books are a great source.

I’ve love personal development books and have used them and other tools for my own personal development. I’ve always hoped that one great book or one great improvement course would turn my life around and change everything for the better.

It took me years to gradually understand the fact that for changes to happen, I needed to look within myself. It required that I become masters of my thoughts…the books are guides but I am the adventurer.  It’s not up to the books for my development it’s up to me.

The only lasting way to change a person’s life and circumstances is to change their thoughts…to develop their mental strength. The truth is that thoughts ultimately affect your actions, character and then your circumstances.

At times we all have our insecurities. Nobody is perfect. Many times we wish we had better things, better features, better body parts, etc.

But life is full of opportunities to grow and develop.  Sure at times we’ll have our insecurities, fear and doubt.

Nobody’s perfect.

And when you look at these occurrences as a chance to explore and find out more about who You really are you’ll be on ‘The Never Ending Journey’ of personal empowerment.

Personal development and loving yourself is not a matter of shouting to the whole world that you are perfect and you are the best. It’s the virtue of acceptance and contentment.

When we begin to enhance ourselves, we feel contented, happy and empowered.

Please let me know how your Never Ending Journey is going in the comments below.

Every time I read something from Napoleon Hill I am amazed at how profound his words are, even today!

I wanted to share with this excerpt with you with the intention that it get a fire burning in you and you’ll take massive action today.

“This procedure in the development of a Definite Major Purpose is simple, but important, viz:

(a) Write out a complete, clear and definite statement of your Major Purpose in Life, sign it and commit it to memory. Then repeat it orally at least once every day, more often if practicable. Repeat it over and over, thus placing back of your purpose all of your faith in Infinite Intelligence.

(b) Write out a clear, definite plan by which you intend to begin the attainment of the object of your Definite Major Purpose. In this plan state the maximum time allowed for the attainment of your purpose, and describe precisely what you intend to give in return for the realization of your purpose, remembering that there is no such reality as something for nothing, and that everything has a price which must be paid in advance in one form or another.

(c) Make your plan flexible enough to permit changes at any time you are inspired to do so. Remember that Infinite Intelligence, which operates in every atom of matter and in every living or inanimate thing, may present you with a plan far superior to any you can create. Therefore be ready at all times to recognize and adopt any superior plan that may be presented to your mind.

(d) Keep you Major Purpose and your plans for attaining it strictly to yourself except insofar as you will receive additional instructions for carrying out your plan, in the description of the Master Mind Principle, which follows.

Do not make the mistake of assuming that because you may not understand these instructions the principles here described are not sound. Follow the instructions to the letter; follow them in good faith, and remember than by so doing you are duplicating the procedure of many of the greatest leaders this nation has ever produced.

The instructions call for no effort that you may not easily put forth.

They make no demands upon time or ability with which the average person may not comply.

And they are completely in harmony with the philosophy of all true religions.

Decide now what you desire from life and what you have to give in return. Decide where you are going and how you are to get there. Then make a start from where you now are to get there. Then make a start from where you now stand. Make the start with whatever means of attaining your goal that may be at hand. And you will discover that to the extent you make use of these, other and better means will reveal themselves to you.

That has been the experience of all men whom the world has recognized as successes. Most of them started with humble beginnings with little more to aid them than a passionate desire to attain a definite goal.

There is enduring magic in such a desire!”

(Source: The Master Key to Riches. Fawcett Crest Book. 1965. Pgs. 41 & 42.)

The MSI (mental strength idea) that I took away from this is:

Decide now what you desire from life and what you have to give in return.”

Read this again….it’s not think about, guess or hope…it’s decide what you desire!  This takes a commitment and many of us are so afraid to comment to something in case we don’t get it (I talked about this in a previous post).

But here’s the real biggie…decide what you’ll give in return.  WOW!!  Not many success principles talk about this these days.  We all hear about attracting our success, but no one asks what are you willing to give in return?

To generate peak personal performance you have know exactly what you want AND what you are willing to give in return….success is a two-way street.

So go ahead and take out some paper and start writing.  Sure it will take some soul searching and mental strength to write out a complete, clear and definite statement of your Major Purpose in Life, sign it and commit it to memory.  But ask yourself this….”If I don’t, how can I expect my life to really change?’

Mental strength is the ability to overcome and control mental resistance, negative thoughts and emotions to consciously cause things to happen.

By developing mental strength, you will have access to unbelievable personal power; you’ll stay focused on your task and complete your mission.

Sounds awesome right?

Well as with most things that sounds great there is a price to pay to get it.  In this case, it’s ‘discipline’ and ‘openness.’

  • Discipline to:
    • Observe your thoughts everyday for the rest of your life.
    • Question your thoughts and stories and determine if they are supportive
    • To keep account of your results and tie them back to your thoughts
  • Open to:
    • Know that you don’t know (I’ve heard that of all the information out there we know only 3%; we know that we don’t know 17%; and as much of 80% of information is that we don’t know that we don’t know)
    • To question all your results and how you got them
    • What you’re about to read

Here are 6 Principles on mental strength from philosophers, sages, heroes and thought leaders principles about the mind.  I have found these 6 be common among the great ones.

Principle Number 1

The Law of Things: Thoughts are things, they are real forces, and they are energy.  This has been proven over and over again, to doubt this is to doubt your own existence.

Principle Number 2

The Law of Bi-direction: The mind is like a two-way radio, it is a sending and receiving station of thoughts. C’mon, you’ve experienced it; you’ve been in a room and “feel” someone looking at you.  Well, they’re not just looking at you; they’re thinking about you and sending you a message.  Or how about when you’re thinking of someone and they call you.

Principle Number 3

The law of Magnetism:  The Law of magnetism states that, thoughts that are thought with emotional become magnetized and attract similar and like thoughts.  Have you ever gotten in a fight with your significant other or boss and then all the thoughts that follow are about how “bad” the other person is?

Principle Number 4

The law of Management:  The Law of Management states that we are perpetually experiencing thoughts and we have the power and the capacity to either entertain those thoughts or release them.  Let’s say you’re driving on the freeway and someone cuts you off.  At that split instant you can either allow the thought that “whatta jerk!” in your mind or “wow, that person must be having a bad day”  You can either hold on and entertain the first thought…or the second thought.  It’s all up to you!

Principle Number 5

The law of Placement:  The Law of Placement states that we have the power, ability and capacity to place and insert any thought of any type into mind at anytime. This is sometimes a bit tough to practice, because it feels soooo good sometimes to be mad.  But by staying mad we are allowing those thoughts to stay with us.  If when you’re mad you see or think of a puppy, kitten or baby you instantly dissolve that emotion.  So, by consciously managing your thoughts you are actually managing your mood as well.

Principle Number 6

The Law of Association: The six and final principle of is the Law of Association. The Law of Association states that the inner and outer worlds are associated and connected.  The outer world of our circumstances and situations, the inner world of our thoughts and reactions, are connected.  This one is the toughest to discuss without some more background information. And rest assured, your thoughts (inner world) do ignite your actions that create your results (outer world).

Practice these principles every day for 30-days.  At the end of the 30-days pay attention to the results you’re getting…I think you’ll be very surprised!
