It’s a physical impossibility for a negative mind to create positive thoughts. Whenever you permit yourself to focus on the negative elements of life, negative thinking grows to fill all of your thoughts until there’s no space for positive thoughts to develop. It becomes a never-ending cycle. The habit of negative thinking produces increasingly more negative thoughts, which your mind attempts to transform into physical reality.

The effect is certainly a life of despair as well as hopelessness. Cultivate the mental strength practice of clearing away negative thoughts the second they surface. Begin small at first. When you initially hear that inner voice saying, “I can’t do this,” put the thought out of your mind instantly. Instead, focus on the task itself. Break it down into workable pieces and finish them one at a time. Once the task is completed, tell your doubting self: “You were completely wrong. I can do it, and I did!”  Now you’re on the road to personal success.

Now that you’re on the road to personal success and peak performance, what are you going to do on the way and when you “arrive?”

Are you going to buy a new car, perhaps a house?  Maybe invest the money?  What ever you decide I would like to suggest that sharing your abundance is one of the best avenues for personal development.

Here’s what Napoleon Hill says about the “Willingness to Share One’s Blessings:”

“He who has not learned the blessed art of sharing has not learned the true path of happiness, for happiness comes only by sharing. And let it be forever remembered that all riches may be embellished and multiplied by the simple process of sharing them where they may serve others. And let it be also remembered that the space one occupies in the hearts of his fellowmen is determined precisely by the service he renders through some form of sharing his blessings.

Riches which are not shared, whether they be material riches or the intangibles, wither and die like the rose on a severed stem, for it is one of Nature’s first laws that inaction and disuse lead to decay and death, and this law applies to the material possessions of men just as it applies to the living cells of every physical body”.Source: The Master-Key to Riches. Fawcett Crest Book. 1965, pg. 22.

Even when we haven’t reached our personal success destination we would be wise to share whatever we have.  If you read the above again carefully Dr. Hill never mentions money, but rather “blessings.”  Blessings can take many forms and be shared in a mutilated of ways.

  • Do have a good voice?  Read a book for the audio library for the blind
  • Have lots of energy?   Share it with the Special Olympics
  • Good with your hands?  Share that with Habitat for Humanity

We all have an abundance of blessings that we can share.  Sure our blessings can include money and wealth but if we put all our attention on money as blessing, we’ll miss all the other blessings in our life.

As Bruce Lee once said …” It is like a finger pointing away to the moon. Don’t concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory.

Here’s the “Creed for Riches” from Dr. Napoleon Hill

“I give thanks daily, not for mere riches, but for wisdom with which to recognize, embrace, and properly use the great abundance of riches I now have at my command. I have no enemies because I injure no man for any cause, but I try to benefit all with whom I come in contact, by teaching them the way to enduring riches. I have more material wealth than I need because I am free from greed and covet only the material things I can use while I live.” – Source: PMA Science of Success Course. Pg. 25

Perhaps it would be worth copying and printing this out and contemplate it daily for the next 30-days.   By applying this mental training you will be using the power of your subconsciousness to develop a success mindset and start to truly live you peak potential.

I’d like to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Today and for the next few weeks…maybe months, I’m going to coach you.  Sure I’d love to coach you “live.”  IfMental strength you’ve never been coached I’d strongly recommend considering it…takes a look at all the lives people Tony Robbins and other great coaches have changed through coaching…it does work! If you’d like to find out how personal success coaching can help you Contact Me.

But for toady, I’m going to coach you “virtually.”

What I’m going to do is highlight an aspect or characteristic of the top achievers, the ones with outstanding mental strength the ones with abundant personal success.

In observing individuals that have achieved their own peak potential there are similarities in their behavior and attitude.  Success leaves clues, and those that have the mental strength to push through obstacles make these clues VERY visible.  We only need to stop and look for them.

So, what I’m going to do is do some mental training with you from the perspective of the personal success.  Keep in mind that you define your own personal success not me or anyone else.

Ready?

Here we go!

Mental Strength Tip #1

The Mentally Strong Operate from Objective Reality

Objective reality means making sure that a person perceives their skill level as close to reality as possible. Most “weak” thinking and underachiever’s way of thinking is slightly to extremely delusional regarding their skills, work ethic (how much effort they put into their goal), mindset, goals, etc.

This delusion restricts them from taking their results to the next level.  This is a serious and critical issue especially as it relates to specific “skill” level.  A person who believes they are a top performer (and actually are not) will make excuses; blame others and a situation as they continue to manifest less then optimal results.  They’ll remain confused and excuse prone until a mental coach steps in and assists the person into really seeing what their objective reality really is.

The optimum is to have a one-on-one discussion that digs deep into the results the person is actually getting…in fact its critical!  Then making inquiries as to the reasons the unsatisfactory results would be next step.

It is important to get all the excuses on the table; this will expose exactly what the person is thinking.  If the person doesn’t make excuses and accepts full responsibility, then they have or on the process of developing mental strength and achieving personal success.

Mindset Questions to Uncover Your Beliefs

  1. If you improved your ability, would get better results?  If so, buy how much?
  2. What would it take to improve your ability?
  3. Are you confident enough in your ability to improve to sign your name on it?

Mental Weak Thinking and Beliefs about Objective Reality

  1. I’m a top performer (when their results show otherwise)
  2. Optimum and excellent results are more about luck then skill
  3. Optimum and excellent results are pie in the sky and achieved by few

Mental Strength Thinking and Beliefs about Objective reality

  1. My results are the true measure of my level of thinking
  2. I am responsible for my thinking, actions and results
  3. When I become a better performer, I will get better results

Questions of the Heart

  1. Are the results you’d like to get really impossible, or are they just impossible for you?
  2. If you really believe you’re a top performer, how come your results don’t show it?
  3. Are you habits, actions and behaviors congruent with the size and scope of your vision?

Questions to Contemplate

  1. How can you bridge the gap between the results you need to achieve and the results you’re currently getting?
  2. What actions steps can you take in the next 90 days to move you closer to the results you want to you to get?
  3. What benchmarks can you set to indicate you’re on the right track?

Final Thought

The cornerstone of the mental strength coaching process is simple: Identify a person’s core beliefs – What he or she “knows” to be fact – and the coach around shifting the perspective about the beliefs that are holding the person back.

I hope you enjoyed our coaching session and pleas let me know if I can help you bridge your gap to peak performance in the comments below.

Two mountaineers descending a snow/ice gully f...
Image via Wikipedia

A friend of mine, Shawn Phillips has a great blog “Start Strong Monday” and today’s post was “The Joy of Putting One Foot in Front of the Other” and using mountaineering as a metaphor for life and goals.

I made a comment on the post about false summits and wanted to expand a bit more on in this post.

For those that have not had the joy of mountain climbing it is (for me) the most challenging physically and mentally and most rewarding sports there is.

It takes physical strength, mental strength and sometimes…spiritual strength.  There is no better metaphor for achieving goals then mountaineering.

Imagine…

There you are, up high on a mountain gasping for breath, you’ve been climbing since 2:00 AM.  The view is spectacular and you’re deep in your rhythm.  Then you see it…

The summit!

You feel a sense of excitement knowing your struggle is almost over.  You’ve been going for hours with a 50 lbs pack.  You’re cold, hungry and probably dehydrated, but you feel oh so good, now that your goal is in view.

You start to think how nice it’s going to be to rest for a few minutes, grab something to eat, enjoy the view and feel the great satisfaction of accomplishing what you set out to do.

As you get closer you’re excitement builds and you might even back off a bit to save some energy for the way down.  You get closer and closer…you start to climb the steepest part…you’re almost there and then you reach the top!

A sinking feeling hits you….it wasn’t the summit after all, it was a false summit and the real summit is still way ahead of you.  Your enthusiasm disappears, your energy sinks and you feel depressed.    You gave it everything you got and you’re still not there.

Now what?

For most of us this happens too often in attempting to reach a goal in life.  You think you’ve given it everything you can and then you reach your “false summit” and give up.

For those that have learned from the false summit, this is expected, you keep your rhythm knowing you’ll not stop or slow down until you have actually “bagged the summit.”

The other type of “false summit” is when you really do see the end…your goal and you slow down to look around, tell others you’re that you’re almost there, or any other number of reasons.  Then out of nowhere you get hit by something and never make it.

Ever watch a football player heading for the End Zone slow down and look behind them?  When out of nowhere a defense player catches and tackles him short of making a touchdown.

See there are four types of people.  Those that:

  • Start weak and finish weak – This type really never gets going and complain how cruel life is.
  • Start weak and finish strong – This type tend to take a very, very long time in achieving their goals and often wonder “why.”
  • Start strong and finish weak – This type gets distracted by other goals and opportunities and really never finishes any of them.
  • Start strong and finishes stronger – This type gets their goal and more.  They blast through the finish line with so much momentum they keep going onto another goal and then another goal…you get the picture right?

So, let me ask you…which type are you?

Are you going to surrender to the false summit…or are you going blast through the finish line on to more goals?

This is a decision and choice only you can make.

If you find yourself wanting to be in the “start strong and finishes stronger” and don’t know how, hire a coach a mentor…someone that can help you see and dissolve your limiting thoughts and beliefs.

Believe me it will be worth it….the view is great from the top and there’s plenty of room!

There is a lot to be learned from sports and especially top athletes that can be applied elsewhere in life.  One of these aspects is periodization.

Before I get into how periodization can be applied to non-physical/non-athletic goals I need to establish what periodization is, just hang in there…I’ll tie all this together at the end.

Basically, periodization is an organized approach to training and competition that involves progressive cycling of various aspects of a training program during a specific period of time. It is a way of alternating training to have the athlete peak at competition.

Included in periodization are the 4 key training factors.  The training factors pyramid is:

  • Layer 1 (bottom of the pyramid) – Physical Preparation (general)
  • Layer 2 – Technical Preparation (specific)
  • Layer 3 – Tactical Preparation (very specific)
  • Layer 4 (top of the pyramid) – Psychological Preparation (mindset)

Layer 1 – Physical Preparation: This phase is used for general conditioning and getting the athlete ready for the next phase.   Depending on the physical condition of the athlete this phase can be short, or quite long.  The key here is the athlete moves on to Layer 2.

Layer 2 – Technical Preparation:  During this phase physical strength and conditioning drills and exercise are introduced that have direct transfer to the specific sport.   There is a strong crossover effect from the drills to the desired sport specific action.  An example would be footwork drills for a football player.  Think about this…would a swimmer need to footwork drills…no! So the technical preparation is strength and conditioning drills and exercises that will directly improve the athlete performance. Then on to Layer 3.

Layer 3 – Tactical Preparation:  These a sport specific drills for the unique to not only the sport, but the role of the athlete. Again back to football, a lineman doesn’t need to improve his 100 yard speed, so he wouldn’t do 100 yard sprints (at least not for position specific applications).  Another example, a marathon running would train by doing a 40 yard dash.

Layer 4 – Psychological Preparation – Although this is at the top of the pyramid mindset has to be integrated into every phase.  When mindset is addressed at the top is when visualization and relaxation techniques come into play, to name just two.

OK…so how does all this apply to you if you’re not an athlete?

Great question!

Most people stay way too long and often never got out of Layer 1 – general conditioning.

What does this mean?

Let’s say you’re a salesperson.  This Layer (1) might be positive mental attitude.  Hey, I’m all for PMA…the more the better.  But if a person stays with general PMA too long they’ll never “fine tune” themselves and reach their goal.

Layer 2 or the tactical preparation is where you begin to fine tune your skill.  Back to the salesperson, here they would take sales training course; read books that would help them improve their overall sales ability.

In Layer 3 (technical preparation) the salesperson would learn everything he/she could about their products, customers, competition etc.

And in Layer 4 they would practice “seeing” the sale call going smoothly and successfully.

OK, I can hear you saying, “Sure this makes sense but I’m not in sales, how does this work for me?”

By looking at what you want to accomplish you need to select “training and conditioning” that moves you from one layer to the next.  Most people on a self-development journey will start with Layer 1 (PMA).  But to move to the Layer 2 and upward chooses MUST be made as to what supports and what does not support your specific development.

For every chose you make there will be hundreds of chooses you do not make, and this takes mental strength.

The Recap

Layer 1 – This is your general preparation phase.  This phase is used to get you ready for more specific training and work.

Layer 2 – This is where you start to hone in on teachings, trainings and education that that has a cross over effect and can be applied directly to your desired skill/role.

Layer 3 – This is laser focused training, this is where you become the expert…the best at what you do.

Layer 4 – This is where you use the power of the mind to control your thoughts and emotions to achieve your desired goal.

There is one more point to be made about periodization…you HAVE to know “who you are” and what you want. A swimmer knows they’re a swimmer and they stay focused on that role. Again…this will take mental strength.  But once you have determined “who you are” and what you want periodization will work to being out the peak performance in you.
