This episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast is in reference to Mental Strength Tip #12 – Adversity is Essential for Personal Warrior Mind PodcastSuccess and discusses the importance of adversity plays in our lives and personal growth. Adversity is required and necessary for us to experience personal growth and to achieve personal success.

The real issue is how we label and frame an event.  For some, adversity is challenging, something to test oneself.  For others they think adversity means they’re doing something wrong.  After all isn’t the Law of Attraction supposed to make life easy?

In your body if you don’t use your muscles they atrophy.  You have to have some stress….some “adversity” to simulate growth.  This is how adversity works in our lives.  It provides the stress for us to experience personal growth.

The funny thing about adversity, the more you try to avoid it, the more you get.  This IS the Law of Attraction in action!  You are focusing on adversity, so you get it!

When you shift your perspective and begin to see adversity as an adventure that will help with your personal growth

Who Ever You Think You Are, You're More Powerful Then That

So, let me ask you, what does difficulty mean to you? The way you answer this question will reveal a lot about your beliefs surrounding success and your performance (how you show up).  If you feel that you life is hard, unfair and only the “lucky” or unscrupulous succeed…well then you’ll need to spend some time at mental strength bootcamp.  If however, you understand that adversity is a sign that you’re taking action and you’re on the path to personal success….well then, let’s move on!

Mental Strength Coaching:

The first step here is to determine your current level of consciousness (that’s where answering the above questions come in) and then begin moving your thinking to a higher level of awareness.  This is done by helping you understand that your greatest achievements and breakthroughs have come and will come out of your greatest adversities.  Building this mental strength habit of being more concerned about how you respond to adversity as opposed to the adversity itself is a continual practice.  The more you practice, the better you get.  The better you get, the more you’ll achieve your peak personal performance.

Final Thought

Peak performance individuals aren’t out looking for adversity to conquer, but they are mentally equipped to deal with them as the need arises.  Just as the military guard out boarders, the mental strong are well prepared and trained to handle any threat on any lever and respond in a proportional manner.

My job as a mental strength coach is to help you develop the beliefs that you have the ability and skill to adequately deal with any adversity that life throws at you. Once this belief takes hold, you become fearless, courageous and free to attack life with all the talent and ability you have inside!

This Warrior Mind Podcast is based on Mental Strength Tip #10 – Segmenting EmotionsWarrior Mind Podcast

Let me ask you something….think about this carefully…how do you handle multiple problems, challenges, etc  without becoming emotionally overwhelmed?  Or don’t you?

Being able to look at, assess and find solutions to one issue at a time, not only exercises your mental strength, but it helps progress you towards peak performance.

Enjoy the podcast below:

Who Ever You Think You Are, You're More Powerful Then That

Observe yourself in pressure situations where focusing exclusively on one problem at time is a necessity.  Now for the ‘fun’ part…see how many challenges you can throw at yourself (or ask some on to help you) before you become emotionally overwhelmed and experiences a mild mental “meltdown.”  One you know where this breaking point is, become aware of the exact point where it happens. Then develop a plan to slowly expand your capacity/comfort zone a little at time.

One good way is what some military and paramilitary personal do; they use the “WIN” formula.  WIN stands for “What’s Important Now?”  When you know what is important at this every moment, you can address it and move on to the next issue.  If however you get stuck in thinking about ALL the issues, you’ll be parallelized and not take any action.

Final Thought

The size of the leader can be measured by their mental strength capacity to handle multiple challenges without becoming emotionally paralyzed.  The skill of segmentation is being able to maintain focus at the task at hand, no matter what is happening on the outside.  It’s all about harnessing mental strength energy and consciously directing it towards the task at hand without distraction.

This podcast is in conjunction with Mental Strength Tip #9 – Mental Strength is Based Relativity.Warrior Mind Podcast

Achieving peak personal performance and personal success begins with a mental strength mindset and empowering beliefs long before a person ever experiences success.

When facing a problem…er…challenge, the mentally strong know that everything is relative.

We’ve all heard the words of wisdom: “I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet.”

This is based in ‘relativity’

Everything is relative in this world, where change alone endures.” -  Leon Trotsky

“Basic philosophy, spirit and drive of an organization have far more to do with its relative achievements than do technological or economic resources, organizational structure, innovation and timing. “ – Marvin Bower

When we take this quote and apply to an individual we can see how some can become depressed or enthused…depending on their relative perspective.

The podcast below will go into this in more detail.

Who Ever You Think You Are, You're More Powerful Then That

Final Thought

Embracing the idea that everything is relative really puts things in perspective and will shift your thoughts from self-pity to gratitude.  The emotion of gratitude has the magical quality of increasing mental strength energy as its expanding mental strength energy. It’s a non-linear concept rooted in quantum physics.  What physical exercise is to the body; gratitude is to the mind.

This warrior mind podcast is in conjunction with Mental Strength Tip # 8 for Peak PerformanceWarrior Mind Podcast

There’s an old saying (and a song) that money makes the world go round.  I would like to offer that beliefs make the world go round, or go flat, or go rich, or go poor, or go (you fill in the blank)

When you look at the Warrior Mind Coach model of TFAR – Thoughts lead to Feelings – Feelings lead to Action (or not) and Actions lead to Results, its’ clear that when we can control our thoughts we can control our results.

But where do the thoughts come from?

Our beliefs!

So, by installing empowering beliefs these will automatically lead to empowering thoughts…well you see where this is going right?

Achieving peak performance and personal success begins with a mental strength mindset and empowering beliefs long before a person ever experiences success.

Who Ever You Think You Are, You're More Powerful Then That

The good news is you can work with more than one belief at a time.  And this is exactly what I do with my clients.    I’ll continue giving examples of what the average person and a mental strong person tend to believe about different aspects of their lives, i.e. peak performance, personal success, personal development, etc.   This almost always serves as a guide to higher consciousness and awareness about the supportive (or non-supportive) nature of a belief.

Final Thought

The practitioners of mental strength believe in their success long before they see it.  Their beliefs lead them to do what ever it takes to reach their peak potential. They operate their lives knowing their destiny is certain and in their control.  When they meet obstacles they rarely falter, knowing these are just signs letting them know they’re on the road to their personal success. Bumps are simply a sign and part of the journey.

Whereas the average person is shocked and stunned by setbacks, and many times quit right after the first obstacle.  The mentally strong expects these things to occur as part and parcel of their ascension to their peak performance. The mental strong know it all begins with a vision and belief system and then to take action and make that vision a reality!

If you’d like to get started on developing radical mental strength for personal development, personal empowerment or personal success, ask your Introductory Consultation.

Welcome back….I hope you’ve enjoyed this series so far.  In case this is you first visit I would suggest reading Part commitmentI and then Part II before venturing into this last section.

In Part II we finished by discussing “trying” and to summarize:

Mental Weakness = Trying + Doubt = Failure

Mental Strength = Commitment + Action = Personal Success

Everyone experiences doubt. Everyone is afraid of failure. It is a choice as to whether you are committed to it or to success. If you commit to yourself and you feel times of doubt or even failure, train yourself to see these as moments to learn from and then keep moving forward. You cannot use these moments of doubt to commit to another outcome – failure.

Remember, there is no failure, only feedback; it just might not be the feedback you’re looking for.

Also, it’s not possible to be committed to everything. You need to make up a list of priorities and commit to these. If you try to commit to everything, again we all know this is not possible so failure enters into the equation. Trying to commit to everything and then failing leads to feelings of anxiety, stress, feeling overwhelmed and guilt.

Again…it is not possible to commit to everything. We must make choices. Trying to commit to everything is a form of gluttony, being unable to say no, not wanting to let others down, scared that saying no may make you lose the one opportunity you might get. These feelings are all about a mentality of scarcity. Scarcity is where you think this will never come along again so you have to grab it. Scarcity is built around a concept of being scared. It is just another form of fear and then failure.

According to studies in psychology were able to keep on mind 7 +/- 2 “things.”  So, I would recommend that the maximum commitments you’d want to handle at onetime are 7.

Committing to success is fundamentally committing to yourself and this is the very first feeling of personal success.

And doesn’t that will feel wonderful!

Contemplation

List the number one priority in your life that you are committed to right now.

  • Should this be number one?
  • How will you work out if this should be number one or not?
  • Who is your support team?
  • Do you believe 100% in them and trust them completely to support you?
  • What are the ways in which your support team can support you?

Application

As human beings we are always committed to something. There is never a time, not even a split second, when we are not committed.

Now this is a big statement, so let’s test it.

You might say, “What about when I’m lying on the sofa watching television? I‘m not committed to anything then.” But I would reply that is exactly what you are committed to at that very moment: lying on the sofa watching television and doing nothing else!

Now let‘s dig a little deeper.

There could even be a stronger unconsciousness belief.

Consider this scenario: It is Saturday afternoon and you have a stack of work to complete by Monday. You know that to finish it on time, you will need to work on it all weekend. Instead, you’re lying on the sofa watching television. What might be your unconsciousness, in fact, your true commitment at that moment?

So you go see a coach and you and talk about this situation. You can‘t figure out why you have to work on weekends and you really don‘t like the company you work for. You even think your manager is uncaring and insensitive.

From my experience, the first step for me in listening to this story is that I cannot make any assumptions about this story or the outcome of it. I need to discuss with my client every statement they make. There are infinite possible commitments that may underlie their actions for lying on the sofa watching television, any commitment that they have not consciously chosen and unconsciousness belief that they may be committing to instead.

Of course, the challenge is that we are often not aware of what that unconsciousness belief is at the time. We have amazingly creative reasons for why we lie on the sofa and they always seem so “true.” We even make sure we have friends around us who agree with our reasons: “Oh, I know, it’s terrible the way they make you do all the work. You deserve a break.”

So, why bother to find these beliefs?

There is a lot of power in becoming honest with ourselves about why we do things the way we do. This is the key to living a powerful, peaceful, fulfilling life. Socrates said “the unexamined life is not worth living.” By examining the behaviors that we engage in and then discerning the beliefs behind them, we can decide whether these are the beliefs we really want in our lives or whether we want to make and keep other beliefs.

The opposite of living an examined life is living as a victim of life. You might say, “I’m not a victim here, it’s just that other people pull me down!” However, if you are not living a life that you have consciously chosen and are allowing life to carry you along like a piece of drift wood bobbing on the ocean waves, then you are not choosing the life that you want.

If you don’t know what you are committed to then this absence of direction will allow for others to tell you what they want.

This, my friend, is a guarantee for failure!

Following through on your commitments is powerful. It builds mental strength and confidence. It also builds trust in yourself and others will see and feel this as well. Once you begin to explore your unconsciousness beliefs and what you are committed to, you may decide not to change it. You may decide that your belief is not a problem and does not hold you back from reaching your personal goals.

This is fantastic to know!

The point is that by identifying your belief and what you are committed to, you have the power to change. The choice is in your hands. You are no longer living as a victim of life, but consciously, with mental strength, choosing your commitments.

My Experience

As you work with my client’s and move them through the coaching process and my coaching model, I need to support them in understanding what they want to commit to. This process will take time and it must be driven by my client. For me, this is an opportunity to explain the importance of having a vision, personal goals to work towards and to really supporting them in being aware of their beliefs.

My role is not to decide what beliefs are best for my client’s but rather the importance of aligning my client‘s beliefs with their pathway forward. Coaching is about working with my client to develop them. It must be about their development plan, not one they have been swayed to believe, by me or anyone. And especially not one that was told to them years ago by well-meaning people, instead it must be a conscious plan that they choose to make.

When you are working with your unconsciousness beliefs, be alert to your language. Your use of language will give you great insight into how much self belief you have. It will also help you to see how committed you are and how your language supports your personal success and not your failure.

Self Observation

One way you can support yourself is to see if your actions are aligned with your personal goals and your path forward. If your actions are aligned with your personal goals, then you’re committed. One way of creating this alignment is to put in place a structure. For example, if you  say you’re committed to spending time with your children and you end up spending 100 hours a week at work and come home after they are in bed, then you are only “trying, they are not “committed.”

If you are truly committed to your personal goals, personal success and your journey you will put in place a structure to make the time available. As a coach it is a great moment of observation and aid my clients in creating a structure for them to make their goal achievable.

My commitment to my client and their commitment to goals…I don’t run ahead of them trying to pull them along and I don’t follow them from behind trying to push them to their goal.  I travel with them side-by-side assisting them the entire way.

Reflections

  • What commitment do you really want to make about your personal goals?
  • What structures are you going to put in place to make sure that you fulfill your new powerful commitment?
  • What support can you put in place to help you when you notice that your level of commitment is slipping?

OK…I hope you found this series very informative…I enjoyed sharing it with you.

In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I’m going to go over the 5 Steps to success.Warrior Mind Podcast

The 5 steps for success go’s hand in glove with creating a well-formed outcome and SMARTER goals.  This formula can be applied to all areas of your life.  Remember: it’s much easier to hit a target that is clearly defined and visible.

I’ve just opened up a new “store” Mental Training Store that has an audio program about success.

Who Ever You Think You Are, You're More Powerful Then That

1 – Know Your Outcome

You need to know your outcome, you should have an outcome for everything you do Although you might be tempted to accept outcomes from someone else, your outcomes are the most important..

Choosing to do nothing or to wander through life is an outcome – realize you chose it and ask yourself ‘How well is this outcome serving me?’ When you do not have something specific to achieve, there are many other people who do have a goal and how often do you find yourself helping them to achieve their outcome! When this happens, you may feel taken advantage of or blame the other person. You need to realize that you chose that path and in doing so created the ensuing results. There is no one to blame. Be conscious of the choices you are making in your life and the consequences (rewards) that arise.

What is your outcome for getting this program? If it is to simply to listen to and read the information?  If so, congratulate yourself, you are on your way to achieving it! Or you may wish to consider the following outcome: Find at least one idea in this program that if you were to adopt it today, it would change your life for the better.

When you are ready, why not set other outcomes that you would like to achieve, in the areas of health, relationships, career, family … ?

2 – Take Action

While this might seem self-evident, many people do not do this. They make up excuses, or give excellent reasons (side note: “reasons” are an indicator of limiting beliefs) of why sitting around and doing nothing or something apart from their goal is the right thing to do. This program is all about making things happen, for you or for others.

Many people with a clear outcome do not take action to achieve it. How many times have you heard a friend (or even yourself) talk passionately about building/achieving something or taking a special trip and yet, they never fully commit to it and it remains, but a dream.

For illustration purposes, suppose my outcome is to travel to Los Angeles this weekend to enjoy the restaurants and night life. Unless I take action, such as getting in my car and driving to Los Angeles (or taking the bus, train or airplane); this will remain an outcome that I would like to achieve next week, next month, next year, … .

3 – Have Sensory Acuity

If you have the awareness to see, hear and feel what isn’t working, you can change your behavior to steer you towards the desired outcome.   It’s OK to be off course, as long as you are aware and make corrections.

You need to pay attention and have some form of measure to know whether you are making progress towards our outcome. Or, maybe you have already achieved it or are going in the wrong direction.

Turning to our example of spending an enjoyable weekend in Los Angeles, assume I am driving along the highway of life, when a signpost appears which says ‘Phoenix 180 miles’ (Phoenix if west of Los Angeles). I can notice this piece of information make a correction and continue to Los Angeles. Or as many of us do – choose to ignore it and continue on my current direction. Have you ever done that? I know I have when I have not been paying attention to what is important to me and what is happening in my life!

4 – Have Behavioral Flexibility

If what you are doing isn’t working, anything else has a better chance of working, so change what you are doing. Many times we just stubbornly repeat the same thing, yet that has already proven not to work. The more flexible you are in your own behavior, the more you are controlling the situation you are in, and the better you become as a communicator and sales professional.

Some of us actually see the signposts of life and choose not to admit we need to change course, behaviors, beliefs etc.

In our example, I can choose to notice that I have driven 380 miles in the wrong direction and hope that if I persist long enough in this one direction, everything will eventually work out. Or I can become aware of the signpost and decide to explore what other options are available to me – turn around at the next interchange and head for Los Angeles, or stop at Palm Springs and take a flight to Los Angels, or stay in Palm Springs for the weekend.

5 – Operate From a State of Physiology Excellence

Operating from a totally resourceful state will empower you, and as states are quite contagious, it will also empower whoever you are with. If you are not feeling too hot, change that, by adopting a physiology of resourcefulness and firing off ‘anchors’ that make you feel good.

Your thoughts (internal representations) affect your physiology and your physiology affects your thoughts. In your mind, you should have thoughts (pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes and smells) of achieving your outcome, while adopting a physiology of having already achieved it.

This reminds me of a true story told to me by a student in one of my classes. He had a friend who, after graduation from college, wanted to be an executive in a financial institution. After graduation, the best job he could find was in the mailroom in a financial institution. This did not deter him at all. Every day, he showed up for work in a suit and tie and carried himself as if he were already an executive – for in his mind, he was an executive, who just happened to be getting a little experience in the mail room. Do you think he was noticed? You bet! Do you think he advanced in the financial institution – YES! A couple of years later, management recognized what he knew all along and officially appointed him an executive in the financial institution.
