It can be done when you believe it can….mental strength

It’s known as a “self-fulfilling prophecy” whenever something happens simply because we think it will. Your mind is built to ensure that it continuously looks to manifest into physical reality the things it acknowledges most. The majority of us will never understand the enormous potential we possess-because we’re unwilling to believe that we can achieve things that other people consider are impossible. “Impossible” tasks demand extra effort and greater focus, but when they’re finished, the rewards and personal success, i.e. financial and psychic, are proportionate with the work required. You may not be able to achieve everything you’d like, but you won’t accomplish anything unless you believe you can.

And when you come across a situation that you are absolutely positive that can’t be accomplished or solved you need to put it out of your mind immediately and forever.   Think of it as the mental strength task of “closing a door.”

Here’s what Dr. Napoleon Hill has to say about ‘Door Closing’

Consider the rather serious problems which arise in one’s mind in connection with disappointments and failures of the past, and the broken hearts that occur as the result of the loss of material things or the loss of friends or loved ones.

Self-discipline is the only real solution for such problems. It begins with the recognition of the fact that there are only two kinds of problems: those you can solve, and those you can’t solve.

The problem which can be solved should immediately be cleared by the most practical means available, and those which have no solution should be put out of your mind and forgotten.

Let us think, for a minute, about this process of forgetting. Refer to it as closing the door on some unpleasantness which is disturbing your emotional equilibrium. Self-discipline, which means mastery over all emotions, can enable you to close the door between yourself and the unpleasant experience of the past. You must close the door tightly and lock it securely, so that there is no possibility of its being opened again. This is the way to treat unsolvable problems, too. Those who lack self-discipline often stand in the doorway and look wistfully backward into the past, instead of closing the door and looking forward into the future.

This door closing is a valuable technique. It requires the support of a good, strong will, and you have a strong will if you have the departments of your mind organized and under the control of your ego, as they should be.

Door closing does not make you hard, cold or unemotional, but it does require firmness. Self-discipline cannot permit lurking memories of sad experiences, and it wastes no time worrying over problems which have no solution. You cannot yield to the temptation to relive your unhappy memories, for they destroy your creative force, undermine your initiative, weaken your imagination, disturb your faculty of reason, and generally confuse the departments of your mind.

You must place the power of your will against the door that shuts out that which you wish to forget, or you do not acquire self-discipline. This is one of the major services self-discipline can perform for you. It closes the door tightly against all manner of fears, and opens wide the doors of hope and faith!

Self-discipline closes the door against jealousy, hatred, revenge, greed, anger and superstition, and opens the door to friendship, goodwill, confidence and love.

Self-discipline look forward, not backward. It roots out discouragement and worry and other negative emotions. And it not only encourages the positive emotions, but it forces them to come before the faculty of reason every time they express themselves so that they, too, may be kept under control.

Self-discipline makes your mind strong. It enables you to take possession of your mind and exercise your God-given right to control your mental attitude. You do not have real self-discipline until you organize your mind and keep it clear of all disturbing influences. Every principle of this philosophy must function through your mind, and self-discipline, which keeps your mind orderly, is the controlling factor in this process of becoming successful”. - Source: PMA Science of Success. Pgs. 286-288.

I often find in my coaching that many clients think that self-discipline restricts them of their freedom.  Just the opposite is true.  When you have the mental strength and self-discipline to adhere to a task or structure you free up other ‘space’ to be creative.

Think if this….a long winding river with deep strong banks.  The banks provide the discipline and structure so that the river can free flow around and about.  If the structure of the banks were not there the river would flow everywhere without ‘purpose’ and perhaps even cause damage to nearby homes, gardens and people.

My challenge for you is to create personal development plan to create structure and self-discipline in ONE area of your life and execute this plan for 30 days.  Then take a look at this area and see how far you’ve come.

I’d like to hear about your plan, please share it in the comments below.

Without a strong foundation built on positive character traits, success will not long endure. It is virtually impossible to fake good character. Phonies are quickly spotted because they haven’t the substance and determination to maintain the charade.

Developing good character begins with a positive attitude, mental strength and self-discipline. Your desire to be a good, decent, honest, considerate person must first take place in your mind. When you make the decision to become a person of character, you will also find that you are much more willing to do the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do.

Mental strength as it applies to self-discipline is at the cornerstone of personal empowerment, character and personal performance.

Here’s a note on what Napoleon Hill had to say about self-discipline.

Self-Discipline

by Dr. Napoleon Hill

“Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you do not control your thoughts, you cannot control your deeds. Therefore, in its simplest form, self-discipline causes you to think first and act afterward. Almost everyone automatically does exactly the reverse of this. People generally act first and think later–unless they take possession of their minds and control their thoughts and deeds through self-discipline.

Control of the Emotions

Self-discipline will give you complete control over fourteen major emotions listed below. Seven of these are positive, and seven negative:

Positive Emotions

  • Love
  • Sex
  • Hope
  • Faith
  • Enthusiasm
  • Loyalty
  • Desire

Negative Emotions

  • Fear
  • Jealousy
  • Hatred
  • Revenge
  • Greed
  • Anger
  • Superstition

All of these emotions are states of mind and are, therefore, subject to your control and direction. You can see instantly how dangerous the seven negative emotions can be if they are not mastered. The seven positive emotions can be destructive too, if they are not organized and released under your complete, conscious control. Wrapped up in these fourteen emotions is power of a truly explosive nature. If you regulate it properly, it can lift you to heights of distinguished achievement. But if you permit it to run rampant, it can dash you to pieces on the rocks of failure. You should realize that your education, your experience, your native intelligence and your good intentions cannot alter or modify these possibilities.” – Source: PMA Science of Success Course. Pgs. 268 & 269

I want to point out line in particular – “You can see instantly how dangerous the seven negative emotions can be if they are not mastered.”

This is important, if not critical in moving forward in life.  But what about all the situations where these negative emotions occurred, what’s a person to do?

In Huna this past negative emotions are described as “little black bags” that we carry with us in our body.  And until we release them we will take them forward with us into our future.

Even if we begin to master thoughts and emotions from now on, we’re still carting these “black bags” with us.

This is where Time Empowerment® comes in.

With Time Empowerment® a person can systematically go back and release the original occurrence where one felt anger, sadness, fear or guilt (each emotion is released separately).  When the origin of negative emotion is released all the subsequent occurrences of that emotion is released as well.

The feeling after all emotions are released is difficult to explain, but it comes close to “bliss.”  The after the emotions are cleared mastery of them will be easier.  Sure it will take mental strength and discipline and the payoff will be huge and reflected in your personal perfromance!

So…let me ask you, what’s your plan to naturalize your negative emotions? What has worked for you?  Let me know in the comments below.

Most people admire and respect strong individuals who have won great success by manifesting will power and self discipline. People in all walks of life, who with sheer will power, self discipline and ambition have improved their life, learned new skills, overcame difficulties and hardships, reduced their weight, raised high in their chosen field or advanced on the spiritual path.

The truth is that everyone can reach high levels of will power and self-discipline through a practical method of mental strength training. These inner powers are not reserved for a few special people.

Will power and self discipline are two of the most important and useful inner powers in everyone’s life, and have always been considered as essential tools for success in all areas of life. They can be learned and developed like any other skill, yet, in spite of this, only few take any steps to develop and strengthen them in a systematic way.

What is will power?

It is the inner strength to make a decision, take action, and handle and execute any aim or task until it is accomplished, regardless of inner and outer resistance, discomfort or difficulties.

It bestows the ability to overcome laziness, temptations and negative habits, and to carry out actions, even if they require effort, are unpleasant and tedious or are contrary to one’s habits.

What is self discipline?

It is the rejection of instant gratification in favor of something better. It is the giving up of instant pleasure and satisfaction for a higher and better goal.

It manifests as the ability to stick to actions, thoughts and behavior, which lead to improvement and success. Self-discipline is self-control, and it manifests in spiritual, mental, emotional and physical discipline.

The purpose of self-discipline is not living a limiting or a restrictive lifestyle. It does not mean being narrowed minded or living like a fakir. It is one of the pillars of success and power. It endows the inner strength to focus all the energy on a goal and persevere until it is accomplished.

Both of these abilities are required for daily actions and decisions, and also for making major decisions and attaining major success. They are needed to start and continue studying, building a business, losing weight, bodybuilding and physical exercises, maintaining good relationships, changing habits, self improvement, meditation, spiritual growth, keeping and carrying out promises and for almost everything else.

One of the most simple and effective methods to develop will power and self-discipline is by refusing to satisfy unimportant and unnecessary desires. Everyone is constantly confronted and tempted by an endless stream of desires and temptations, many of which are not really important or desirable. By learning to refuse to satisfy every one of them, you get stronger.

Refusing and rejecting useless, harmful or unnecessary desires and actions, and behaving contrary to your habits, sharpen and strengthen your mindset. By constant practice your inner power grows, just like exercising your muscles at a gym increases your physical strength. In both cases, when you need inner power or physical strength, they are available at your disposal.

Here are a few examples:

  • Don’t read the newspaper for a day or two.
  • Drink water when thirsty, in spite of your desire to have a soft drink.
  • Walk up and down the stairs instead of taking the lift.
  • Get down from the bus one station before or after your destination, and walk the rest of the way.
  • For a week go to sleep one hour earlier than usual.
  • Sometimes resist the desire to eat ice cream.

These are only a few examples of the many mental strength exercises that can be conducted in order to develop will power, self-discipline that in turn will increase your personal performance. Exercises like these add to the storehouse of your inner strength. By following a systematic method of training you can reach far, have more control over yourself and your life, attain your goals, and improve your life, and gain satisfaction and peace of mind.
