Best: Excelling all others; most productive of good: offering or producing the greatest advantage, utility, or human performancesatisfaction

It’s Time to Step into Your Personal Power and Be the Best You Can Be!

Most of us can improve a part of our life at some level or at least set some personal goals

What areas do you wish or need to improve?

  • Your health
  • Your relationships (both personal and professional)
  • Your knowledge or expertise
  • Your career or job
  • Your impact or your giving toward others
  • Your material condition or creature comforts
  • Your life experiences: Recreation, fun, sports, theater, and so on
  • Your contacts and sphere of influence
  • Your financial condition
  • Your Human Performance

Do you believe you influence the direction of your life and your outcomes?

 Or….

Are you simply a victim of circumstances and random events?

If you believe the latter, there’s no reason to read further. Why stress yourself with steps to improve your life if you feel unable to do anything about it.

If you feel you can have, be, and do more, please read on to find out how to enhance your personal power!

Each of us has a choice to be an overcomer or to be overcome. Success has little to do with circumstances, although some like to blame others for their situation.

We don’t attract what we want; we attract who we are!

 Ouch! This truth can sting.

Example: You want the best team working with and for you, but you are an untrained manager, light on leadership skills. The best talent will not be attracted to you or, if they do join you, they will not stay. Talent is attracted to a capable leader who wants to create a great team.

Being the best you can be is relative to your gifts, talents, abilities, desires, and purpose.

If this is to be the best-year ever for you, what do you need and want to change, remove, or adjust?

Think about one your greatest dreams or desires. Envision yourself realizing that personal goal this very moment.

How does that make you feel? … Inspired? … Enthusiastic? … Motivated?

If I said you could lose 10 pounds over the next year…that might not rouse your interest.

What if I said over the next month? That timeline is more stimulating.

What if we pushed the limits to say you’ll lose 10 pounds by next week?

Wow! That really gets your adrenalin going.

It’s time for all of us to expand our mindset to move from slow, incremental improvements and personal goals, such as losing 10 pounds in a year, to exponential transformation, growth and human performance…like losing 10 pounds in a month or even a week!

Some believe losing 10 pounds a week is too fast, but this is a metaphor, so treat it that way, please. My focus is on the pounds and the timing.

If you plan to lose 100 pounds in the next 12 months, that’s starts to qualify as an inspired and exciting objective, (if you desire to lose that amount of weight).

So, how do we participate in goal setting then achieve our personal goals?

First, most people don’t think about goal setting because they don’t know what they want.

What are your passions and your purpose?

 What motivates you?

The opposite of excitement is boredom—the demise of anyone’s inspiration. It is pretty difficult to get excited about being average and mediocre.

Do you believe you have a purpose in this life?

Are you confident that you are worthy and able to achieve your goals?

In the past, have you set safe but boring personal goals because you didn’t believe you could achieve the lofty, challenging goals you really wanted?!

Have you settled for less?

If you think you can or you think you can’t, you are right!

To help you on your journey to confirming your beliefs and purpose in all areas of your life, I recommend a fantastic personal development package, My Source EXPERIENCE Journal™. It will take you on a personal path to affirming your passions.

You can’t realize your dreams or your true personal power unless you know who you are and what they are.

Action Steps For Optimum Human Performance – Are You the Best You Can Be?

  •  Do know who you are? Your purpose, your passions, and your beliefs?
  • Do you know exactly what you want? What excites you? What inspires you?
  • It’s time to blow the doors off your limits! If you knew you could not fail, what would you want to have, be, and do?
  • If one of your personal goals is financial independence, what will you do with the time you are currently investing in your job? Without your work, you may be at a loss. You need a plan . . . a vision for your future.
  •  Focus only on goals that can be achieved within the next 12 months. No longer-term goals here, please. Focusing on less time—3 to 6 months—is even better.
  •  Create a list of things you dream of having (car, clothes, BBQ), being (great cook, leader, singer), and doing (traveling to Hawaii, racing cars). List 5 items under each heading. Don’t be concerned with how those goals will be accomplished.
  •  Don’t judge yourself as unworthy (low self-worth) and be honest with yourself. For years, I thought I wanted a Ferrari. In the end, I saw that was a boyhood fantasy—and never a real dream for me.
  •  After you list your 15 dreams, select 3 dreams you want to achieve in the next 1 to 12 months—one in each category of having, being, and doing.
  •  Beside each dream goal, determine your first four Action Steps. Make the first step simple so you can do it in just a few minutes.
  • As you complete the first 4 Action Steps, list the next 4 activities that will move you closer to achieving your goals. As you progress, continue to add 4 more Action Steps.
  • Get started now on your Action Steps. Don’t wait a week, a day, or even an hour. Start your momentum right now!
  • Step into your full personal power and make this the best year ever!

OK…let me hear from you!  How to you intend to make this year…heck, this quarter the best ever!  Let me know in the comments below.

Achieving peak personal performance and personal success begins with a mental strength mindset and empowering beliefs.  Personal persoanl successsuccess starts in the mind and finishes with peak performance…taking massive action.

This is one in a series of mental strength tips to help start your week of strong so that you can reach you peak performance, personal success by enhancing your personal development.

I take one subject and run though a brief overview of it, then ask some very direct questions.  The intention of these ‘sessions’ is for you to write the questions in a success journal reflect on them and answer them.

This series of posts is for YOU!  If I’m not able to coach you personally one-on-one, I want you to at least get the benefit of “virtual” coaching.

Objective of this Mental Strength Tip:

To encourage you to stay connected to your past. You past success are your ‘roots’ and to look back and be proud and grateful for how far you have come.  To help you avoid the trap of forgetting what it took to get you to the level of personal success you’ve achieved.  This concept is very helpful in reducing stress reduction and serving as an emotional anchor.

Let’s Get Started:

Think about a time where you achieved success similar to what you are going for now. It might not be the same, but think about the energy it took to achieve your past success.  Remember it full detail.  See what you saw, hear what you heard and feel what you felt.

Got it?

Fantastic!

Questions to Uncover Beliefs about Mental Strength Thinking:

  • How hard was it for you to where you are now?
  • Looking back to where you came from, how does it make you feel to be where you are now?
  • Who are the people that helped you most along the way?

Unsupportive Beliefs about Remembering Your Past Successes

  • It doesn’t matter how far I’ve come, because I have such a long way to go.
  • No one ever helped me.  I’m a self made person.
  • I was always had mental strength thinking.

Mental Strength Beliefs about Remembering Your Past Successes

  • Everything that happened on my past, good, bad and the ugly ended up contributing to my current level of personal success.
  • I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help and support of many other people.
  • Remembering how far I’ve come and what it took to get here keeps my humble and grateful.

Outrageous Questions:

  • Where do you think you would be right now without the help and support you’ve received throughout your life?
  • Do you ever take time to reflect on the growth and progress you’ve made in your personal performance?
  • Have you ever thanked the people who helped you with reaching your current level of personal success?

Reflective Questions:

  • Does thinking about how far you’ve come give you peace of mind?
  • Do thoughts of gratitude for the help and support of others create a sense of fulfillment for you?
  • Does slowing down and remembering where you came from help reduce the stress you experience?

Mental Strength Coaching:

Remember your past success is very powerful another mental strength too to add to your toolbox.  When accessed and then anchored correctly this tool can be extremely useful in pressure filled and stressful situations.

Final Thought

As we start 2011 this is a perfect time to reflect back on 2010 and remember your past personal successes.  It’s easy to get caught up with planning to future and setting goals.  And to take time to reflect back on your past success will bring a sense of personal power and a “I can” attitude, can’t it?

I like to review the year that has past and take what was useful with me into the next one.  Here are 5 tips that you personal performancemay want to bring with you into 2011.

1 – Develop Powerful Rituals – We all have four main energy systems; physical, mental emotional and spiritual. During the day we expend much of the energy in the mental and emotional but not so much for the physical and spiritual.  Develop rituals that will expand and renew these four energy systems.

2 – Move Beyond Your Comfort Zone – Just like a stock that keeps hitting a level of resistance and never breakthrough and increase in value, we too hit our heads on our limiting beliefs and never realize our full potential.  Purposefully push yourself and expand your comfort zone…have fun with it…like going into McDonalds and ordering Chinese food :-)

3 – Understand Your Values – Our values determine were we put our attention and energy. They are what give us motion.  If your results are different then your goals, take an inventory of your values; they may be “misaligned” in accordance to your goals.

4 – Develop Your Travel Plan – If you were going on vacation you’d make travel plans right?  You’d know where you were going, when you’d leave, and when you’d get there.  Set your destination for 2011and develop your travel plans to get there.  Think of 2011 as an adventure…a safari…an expedition, and you design your specific travel plans for living it and getting to your exotic destination!

5 – Bestow Blessings – During your journey this next year bestow all that you see with blessings, especially those individuals that possess what you want/desire.  Your unconsciousness mind can’t tell the difference when you bless yourself or someone else, so when you bless others you are blessing yourself at the same time.  This in turn will create an energy for “attracting” and receiving what you are blessing

By purposefully following these mental strength tips for personal success you will be able to experience your true power and reach new heights in personal performance

I’d like also share some thoughts on reflecting on the past year by Napoleon Hill.

“Once a year we should take a retrospective view of life to see what useful knowledge we have gathered.

In my inventory of the past year’s experiences I find much to guide me in the future. Among other lessons which Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-one has taught me are the following:

First: That it pays to perform more service and better service than one is paid to perform.

Second: That the destroyer is, in turn destroyed, usually by the reaction of his own destructive efforts.

Third: That Time is the friend of the man who is right and the enemy of the man who is wrong at heart, no matter how clever he may be in the art of deception.

Fourth: That every effect has a cause, and, that the effect corresponds, in nature, to the cause.

Fifth: That like attracts like; that one can no more saturate his mind with thoughts of selfishness, fear and failure and still succeed than he could sow thistles and reap clover.

Sixth: That the Golden Rule is more powerful than the Rule of Gold.

Seventh: That happiness comes only from helping others find it.

I approach my work for the coming year with renewed faith in the philosophy of the foregoing seven paragraphs, and, with positive evidence that I will get out of life exactly in proportion to what I put into it”. – Source: Napoleon Hill’s Magazine. January, 1922. Text located on inside front cover.

Achieving peak personal performance and personal success begins with a mental strength mindset and empowering personal successbeliefs.  Personal success starts in the mind and finishes with peak performance…taking massive action.

To help you understand the power of acquiring and developing the mental strength attribute of absolute confidence in yourself.  To achieve peak personal performance one must develop the belief that absolute self-confidence is a mindset created by thinking, felling and programming and not dependent on an external event or circumstance.   When you develop absolute rock-solid confidence your external circumstances WILL change.

Let’s Get Started:

I’m wondering if you’ve ever noticed the difference between the language that an average personal uses and the language of a mentally strong individual. Thoughts and the language it produces has an immediate and critical impact on ones self-confidence.  I’m sure you’ll start to notice now won’t you?

Questions to Uncover Beliefs about Mental Strength Thinking:

  • On a scale of 1 to 9, 9 being the highest, how self-confident are you?
  • Do you believe absolute confidence is something you’re born with or something you learn?
  • Who are the three most self-confident people you know and what do you feel created their confidence?

Unsupportive Beliefs about Self-Confidence

  • Confidence is something you’re born with.  You either have it or you don’t.
  • Personal Success is the only thing that creates self-confidence.
  • Absolute self-confidence is arrogance, and people won’t like me if they think I’m arrogant.

Mental Strength Beliefs about Self-Confidence

  • Absolute self-confidence is self initiated and self created.
  • Self-confidence has nothing to do with whether you’re ‘winning’ or ‘loosing’. It’s resides on the inside…it’s a mindset.
  • Self-confidence is a decision you make about how YOU see yourself.

Outrageous Questions:

  • Would your three closest friends say you have absolute self-confidence?
  • Do your results reflect absolute self-confidence?
  • Dows your thinking, actions and habits really reflect absolute self-confidence?

Reflective Questions:

  • On a scale of 1 to 9, 9 being the highest, how would you rate your self-confidence?
  • What would it take for you to develop greater self-confidence?
  • What has contributed the most to the self-confidence you have now?

Mental Strength Coaching:

I encourage you to begin to monitor the way you use self-talk and what you say to others.  Self talk is the single most powerful proactive reprogramming technique.  Listen to mental strength programming CD’s and audios in the area of your life you need the biggest assistance.  If it’s about money take a look at:

http://warriormindcoach.com/recommends/T-Harv-Eker.html

If it’s about weight loss here’s a great program:

http://www.warriormindcoach.com/blog/mental-strength-for-weight-loss-and-fitness/

Another tool to use is visualization.  See yourself exuding absolute self-confidence in a situation that is currently creating some uncertainty and anxiety. As your visualization program becomes a habit, your subconscious mind will begin to see the internal representation as ‘real.’  Visualization combined with positive self-talk will serve as the foundation for developing a mental strength belief system.

Final Thought

The development of self-confidence is critical for the achievement of personal success and peak personal performance.  It’s both and active and passive process.  The active part is done through self talk, visualization and other mental strength techniques.

The passive part occurs when you begin to experience uncommon success.  Most people wait for personal success, but as your mental strength coach, my job is to help you understand that to get the results you’ve never gotten you’re going to have to become someone you’ve never been.

If you’d like to get started on developing radical mental strength for personal development, personal empowerment or personal success request your Introductory Consultation.

Also, “Develop the Mental Strength of a Warrior” is a fantastic e-book that helps you develop awareness, consciousness and mental strength with a step-by-step plan.

Part of my coaching is to help individuals align and develop their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual strength.  I believe that when this is accomplished a person and authentically live in their power, purpose and passion.

Many of my Wednesday post have been about providing information for contemplation on achieving your personal success and living your purpose with passion.

In following up from yesterday’s post I’d like to share a post from Jon Gordon  that speaks to purpose.

“YOUR PURPOSE MUST BE GREATER THAN YOUR CHALLENGES

I met Leonard on a plane to somewhere when he told me about a time when his life was going nowhere.

He told me how six months earlier, at the age of fifty-four, he lost his job at a Fortune 500 company. He thought his life and business career were finished. No one is going to hire a fifty-four year old sales professional, he frequently told himself. Each day he grew more fearful, pessimistic and depressed.

Then one day while taking a walk of sadness along the beach he thought of his twenty year old son and it occurred to him…

If I give up now, what lesson am I teaching my son?

If I don’t overcome my challenges, my son will learn to let his challenges overcome him.

I need to show my son that even though Dad was knocked down, that he can get back up… so when life knocks him down he’ll know that he can get back up too.

Fueled with a bigger purpose to show his son that he could get back up after being knocked down, Leonard dusted off his resume, called friends and colleagues in his industry and reached out to various companies letting them know he was back in the game.

His positive beliefs lead to powerful actions. Instead of waiting to be fed like a goldfish, he became a shark and went in search of food.

Over a three month period, Leonard’s actions lead to a number of interview opportunities and four job offers. Yes, four offers!!

Now he is with a company that appreciates his knowledge, experience, and talents. He reports directly to the President, and his future is brighter than ever.

Leonard is a testament that if you think your best days are behind you, they are… and if you think your best days are ahead of you, they are.

Positive beliefs lead to powerful actions.

How about you? Have you been knocked down? Is your company going through changes? Are you dealing with change at work and in life? Have you been feeling sorry for yourself?

I want to encourage you to think of Leonard and remind yourself that regardless of the adversity you face, your purpose must be greater than your challenges. Instead of focusing on your problems, focus on your purpose. Instead of seeing yourself as a victim, see yourself as a hero. Heroes and victims both get knocked down but heroes get back up, and armed with optimism and a greater purpose they create a positive future. “

I hope this guest post help you in developing the mental strength to push through any adversity and live with power, purpose and passion.

Brainwave Sync and MeditationMental Strength

In this week’s Warrior Mind Podcast we’re providing a brief meditation with the brainwave sync technology.

I’m going to be releasing numerous audio programs for personal development, personal success and personal performance.

The audio’s will work with your unconsciousness mind utilizes mind and brain synchronization process called “Meta-Sync©” technology.

Meta-Sync© is the simplest, most effective way to directly tap into your higher consciousness and unleash your potential and personal power to think, imagine and to change. There’s no special training necessary, I’ll go over all the basics in accompanying e-books.

You see, when your mind and brain are in sync…in balance your ability to discover solutions, to learn new ideas and create a new body and life is remarkably improved.

I call this “Warrior Mind Programming.”

Warrior Mind Programming incorporates a number of techniques, schools of thought, disciplines, theories, and practices as well as Meta-Sync©. Its basic goal is to change one’s reaction to internal and external stimuli or to help the mind create a physical or emotional effect on its own (e.g.: happiness, confidence). It harnesses the brain’s built-in programming mechanisms to help enhance mental strength, intelligence, end bad habits, stop negative mental patterns and much more. It allows you to focus more of your subconscious resources on tasks you wish to accomplish. In other words, Warrior Mind Programming can help achieve whatever you desire.

Make sure you are NOT operating any moving vehicle while listening to this.  So, sit back, relax and enjoy this brief mediation.

Achieving peak personal performance and personal success begins with a mental strength mindset and empoweringmental strength beliefs.  Personal success starts in the mind and finishes with peak performance…taking massive action.

To help you understand and transcend any ego based thinking about giving and receiving assistance and build the habit of intense cooperation.

Let’s Get Started:

This concept of intense cooperation means going well beyond that of an average team member and becoming the biggest asset to any group you participate in.  This idea includes work ethics, attitude, and overall interaction with your team.

“What if I don’t belong to a team?”  First, in someway we all belong to a ‘team’, whether it’s a master mind group, family, friends or work…we all belong to some kind of team.

If you still believe that you don’t belong to a team…start one!

Questions to Uncover Beliefs about Intense Cooperation:

  • Do you believe being extremely cooperative makes you more valuable?
  • What do you think of people who others call “a company man/women”?
  • How would you respond to teammates who accuse you of sucking up and brown noising because of your intense cooperation?

Unsupportive Beliefs about Intense Cooperation:

  • Overly cooperative people are suck-ups who make the rest of us look bad.
  • It’s us against them.  The organization doesn’t care about us, and people who go beyond their job description are on the side of the company.
  • People who are overly cooperative are looking for something in return.

Mental Strength Beliefs about Intense Cooperation:

  • Intense cooperation shows dedication and fearlessness.
  • Intense cooperation is rare and makes you more valuable to any group.
  • Intense cooperation is always rewarded in one way or another.

Outrageous Questions:

  • Are you afraid of being disliked by weak thinking peers if you exhibit intense cooperation?
  • What’s more important to you: your peer’s acceptance or achieving your vision of personal success?
  • Would you classify intense cooperation as more weak thinking or would using mental strength?

Reflective Questions:

  • How can I help you enhance your level of cooperation?
  • Do you believe becoming more cooperative will move you closer towards peak personal performance and personal success?
  • What would hold you back from making a decision to become intensely cooperative?

Mental Strength Coaching:

The biggest obstacle to getting people to adopt this philosophy is the weak thinking belief most people have about going the extra mile.  Many think it’s about being recognized for their efforts and the truth is it’s about the person themselves.  In other words, the person who adapts this habit of intense cooperation will be in demand no matter where they go.

When you think about intense cooperation be sure to keep your vision of personal success in your consciousness, this will provide the motivation behind taking action. This type of thinking and action will ultimately benefit you more then anyone else.  Once you understand this you can then move on to developing strategies and tactics for your personal success.

Final Thought

Coaching around intense cooperation is easy once you understand that it’s really the only logical choice for a mental strength thinker.  When the average person zig’s – the mentally strong zag’s.

Observe the masses and do the opposite!

You’ll find this often leads to peak personal performance and personal success.  The average person mentally will begin to lose their grip on their consciousness and slip into the blame game while you’ll raise your consciousness and reach your intended goal!

With the New Year approaching many of you are probably thinking about resolutions, goals and what you want to mental strengthaccomplish in 2011.  Often we get excited about our plans and begin to share them with our friends and family.

This always isn’t a good idea.

Here’s what Napoleon Hill said about sharing your dreams with others.

“Keep your major purpose and your plans for attaining it to yourself except in connection with your master mind groups. The reason for this is twofold:

a. Telling many persons, indiscriminately, will allow negative thinking persons to throw stumbling blocks in your path, or to discourage you from attempting to achieve your definite major purpose.

b. Too much talking about your definite major purpose may tend to dissipate the intensity of your desire to achieve your goal.

Either eventually would tend to destroy your enthusiasm and possibly even deter you from further efforts to achieve your definite major purpose.

So far as we are able to tell, this law of cosmic habitforce is absolutely neutral, just like the subconscious section of the human mind through which it operates. It will accept and carry out a negative pattern as readily as it will a positive one. If you allow the fear of criticism, doubt and other people’s negative suggestions to take shape in your mind, it will blot out the picture of your major purpose.

The reason for emphasizing this point is that it is a common tendency of people to boast and to express their greatest enthusiasm in the future tense, by telling what they are going to do. When you speak of your ambitions, if at all, use the past tense, after they have become accomplishments and are not just words.

A word of caution: Do not make the mistake of assuming that because you do not understand these principles completely, they are not sound. Follow the instructions and you will be adopting the method used by some of the greatest leaders ever produced. These instructions call for no effort that you cannot easily put forth. They make no demand on your abilities with which the average person cannot comply.” – Source: PMA Science of Success, pg. 500

As much as we get excited about our future and goals, to achieve our personal success it takes mental strength keep our moths shut and share our vision with a select few.

Let me know your thoughts about this in the comments below.

Orison Swett Marden
Image via Wikipedia

I was recently inspired by the book “Iron Will” by Orison Swett Marden.  It resonates so much with my philosophy of mental strength.  I’m going to take some of the passages from “Iron Will” and translate them into mental strength language.

Part I

The education of the will is the object of our existence,” said Emerson.

This is an understatement, if we look at the human will in its relations to the divine. This agrees with what J.  Stuart Mill said “a character is a completely fashioned will.”

In respect to everyday matters, the development and discipline of one’s will-power is critical in relation to personal success. It’s difficult to estimate the power of will. It is a part of our divine nature, and an element of the power of creation.

The achievements of history have been the choices, the determinations, the creations, of the human will. It was the will that men like Wilberforce and Garrison, Goodyear and Cyrus Field, Bismarck and Grant, made them determined and mentally strong. They simply would do what they planned. These men can no more be stopped than the sun or the oceans tide can be. Most men fail, not through lack of education or agreeable personal qualities, but from lack of dogged determination, mental strength and lack of bold will.

It is impossible,” says Sharman, “to look into the conditions under which the battle of life is being fought, without perceiving how much really depends upon the extent to which the will-power is cultivated, strengthened, and made operative in right directions.” All people need to be educated and trained for the development of will. We live in an era of abundant athletic competitions. Those who are determined to have athletic will-power utilize the kind of mental and physical exercise required to develop their mental strength and will.

MENTAL STRENGTH DISCIPLINE

The athlete trains for his race; and the mind must be put into training to win life’s race and reach personal peak performance.

“It is,” says Professor Mathews, “only by continued, strenuous efforts,  repeated again and again, day after day, week after week, and month  after month, that the ability can be acquired to fasten the mind to one  subject, however abstract or knotty, to the exclusion of everything  else. The process of obtaining this self-mastery–this complete command  of one’s mental powers–is a gradual one, its length varying with the  mental constitution of each person; but its acquisition is worth  infinitely more than the utmost labor it ever costs.”

“Perhaps the most valuable result of all education,” it was said by Professor Huxley, “is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not; it is the first lesson which ought to be learned, and, however early a man’s  training begins, it is probably the last lesson which he learns  thoroughly.”

DOING THINGS ONCE

When Henry Ward Beecher was asked how it was that he could accomplish so much more than other men, he replied:

“I don’t do more, but less, than other people. They do all their work three times over: once in anticipation, once in actuality, once in rumination. I do mine in actuality alone, doing it once instead of three times.”

This was by the intelligent and mental strength exercise of Mr. Beecher’s will-power in concentrating his mind upon what he was doing at a given moment, and then turning to something else. Anyone who has observed business men closely has noticed this characteristic. One of the secrets of a successful life is to be able to hold all of our energies upon one point, to focus all of the scattered rays of the mind upon one place or thing.

See how this contradicts with the notion of multitasking?

CENTRALIZING FORCE

The mental strength reservoir for most people is like a leaky dam, where the greater part of the water flows out without going over the wheel and doing the work of the mill. This is the habit of mind-wandering and worrying about this and that,

Genius, the power which amazes us eyes, is often nothing but perseverance in disguise.

People with fragmentary efforts, disconnected attempts, lack of concentration and uncontrolled by any fixed idea, will never bring personal success. It is definiteness of purpose alone that achieves results.

LEARNING TO SWIM

The way to learn to run is to run; the way to learn to swim is to swim.  The way to learn to develop mental strength and will-power is by the actual exercise of will-power in the business of life. “The man that exercises his will,” says an English essayist, “makes it a stronger and more effective force in proportion to the extent to which such exercise is intelligently and perseveringly maintained.” The use of will-power is a means of strengthening will-power. The will becomes strong by exercise. To stick to a thing till you are master, is a test of intellectual discipline, mental strength and will power.

DR. CUYLER

“It is astonishing,” says Dr. Theodore Cuyler, “how many men lack this power of ‘holding on’ until they reach the goal. They can make a sudden dash, but they lack grit. They are easily discouraged. They get on as long as everything goes smoothly, but when there is friction they lose heart. They depend on stronger personalities for their spirit and strength. They lack independence or originality. They only dare to do what others do. They do not step boldly from the crowd and act fearlessly.”

THE BIG TREES

What’s needed by a person who desires to succeed and reach their peak potential is careful planning. They must accumulate reserved power equal to all potential emergencies. Thomas Starr King said that the great trees of California gave him his first impression of the power of reserve. “It was the thought of the reserve energies that had been compacted into them,” he said, “that stirred me. The mountains had given them their iron and rich stimulants, the hills had given them their soil, the clouds had given their rain and snow, and a thousand summers and winters had poured forth their treasures about their vast roots.”

Nobody can hope to do anything above that of being average that has not made their life a reservoir of power on which they can constantly draw, which will never fail them in any emergency. Be sure that you have stored away, in your power-house, the energy, the knowledge that will be equal to the great occasion when it comes. “If I were twenty, and had but ten years to live,” said a great scholar and writer, “I would spend the first nine years accumulating knowledge and getting ready for the tenth.”

“I WILL”

“There are no two words in the English language which stand out in bolder relief, like kings upon a checker-board, to so great an extent as the words ‘I will.’ There is strength, depth and solidity, decision, confidence and power, determination, vigor and individuality, in the round, ringing tone which characterizes its delivery. It talks to you of triumph over difficulties, of victory in the face of discouragement, of will to promise and strength to perform, of lofty and daring enterprise, of unfettered aspirations, and of the thousand and one solid impulses by which man masters impediments in the way of progression.”

As one has well said: “He who is silent is forgotten; he who does not  advance falls back; he who stops is overwhelmed, distanced, crushed; he  who ceases to become greater, becomes smaller; he who leaves off gives  up; the stationary is the beginning of the end–it precedes death; to  live is to achieve, to will without ceasing.”

Be thou a hero; let thy might Tramp on eternal snows its way, and through the ebon walls of night, Hew down a passage unto day.”  – Park Benjamin
