"The good and very good performers always seem to thrive on mental toughness training. These people are open-minded, successful, and aware that there is always a higher level of performance to be attained, no matter how good they already are. These people often climb from middle-class to world-class results very quickly, and it all begins with their thinking." Steve Siebold |
To explain fully how Warrior Mind Coaching works, we need to clearly define exactly what we mean by “mental strength”. We all have our own definition of strength, and to move forward it’s necessary to establish a common usage that we work with in our coaching process.
One dictionary defines 'strength' as 'the capability to exert power,' and goes on to define 'power' as 'the ability to cause things to happen'.
We can now define strength as 'the capability to cause things to happen'. But as I’ll explain, even this definition is not 100% complete.
When talking about physical strength, this capability to cause things to happen will manifest itself in physical ways: a weightlifter lifting a large weight, a sprinter setting a new record time, a boxer landing a knockout punch, etc. In these physical examples, the athletes all have the capability to cause things to happen. We’d then say that these athletes are physically strong.
Warrior Mind Coaching is not focused on physical strength but on mental strength. (Physical strength IS addressed in Warrior Fitness Coaching).
There is an important similarity however.
In building physical strength, some kind of resistance must be overcome: weights lifted, hills climbed, opponents overcome. Every top athlete must seek out and overcome resistance before achieving their goals. That’s what we call training, and mental training is much the same.
Why Resistance is Vital
For strength to manifest itself there must always be resistance and it must be overcome.
For Warrior Mind Coaching, the dictionary definition is incomplete because it makes no mention of resistance. All athletes use their physical strength to overcome a physical resistance. A reasonable definition of physical strength would therefore be 'the ability to overcome physical resistance and cause things to happen'.
Our approach to coaching is that the human body and mind are inseparably linked. Many of the principles that apply to physical development also hold true for mental development. Therefore Warrior Mind Training defines mental strength this way:
Mental strength is “the ability to overcome and control mental resistance thoughts and emotions and consciously cause things to happen.” |
What’s Your Starting Point?
If you know exactly what you want but don’t know how to get there, Mental Strength Coaching will definitely help. Together we will identify where to focus your efforts so that you tackle challenges that reward you AND make you stronger.
But if you’re simply bored and asking where the excitement in your life is, I say you’re not facing the kind of resistance that will make you strong mentally. You’re likely in the discovery phase where you’re still trying to pinpoint your dream. So that’s where we will start, helping you to gain clarity on what direction you really want to pursue. Then you can begin to select which “opponents” to tackle first, and we’re on our way!
Without a challenge, the warrior is dead. Not physically dead, but mentally dead. That’s what was happening to me. I was dying inside because I wasn’t chasing my dream, heck I think I was still figuring out what my dream was. I was just going through the motions of everyday living, and deep down, I knew it wasn’t enough.
Then I turned it all around using mental strength techniques and methods. Of course, it took me a lot longer than I recommend for anyone else, but I gained a lot of knowledge along the way, and that’s what my Mental Strength Coaching and Training are all about.
